If you haven't done it yet, you've only got 4 years left.

Ah, the sound of the governor peeing all over the gridlocked local officials brings a tear to my eye.

Quote:
Asked if she, as governor, could trump the state's largest city and county and unilaterally tear down a highway that carries more than 100,000 vehicles a day through the heart of Seattle, Gregoire said:

"Yeah, watch me."

And how does funneling an additional "100,000 vehicles a day through the heart of Seattle" on surface streets improve cycling in the city?

Just want to know.

more congestion = more disincentive to drive = more interest in mass transit, cycling, etc?

An additional 100,000 cars can't go through the city. We take the billions that we would spend on the viaduct and put it into more bus service, add a congestion fee for driving a SOV into the downtown core in peak hours, and we just get rid of a large percentage of those single occupancy vehichles.

The correct answer can be found here.

Basically, the same thing that happened when I-5 closed. People will get scared of getting stuck in traffic, so they'll drive less or investigate other options. The city/county/state wants to keep the taxpayers mollified, they will have incentive to provide those options.

This is good news. Although I'd be nice to see people cycling more, I'm more interested in seeing people driving less.

on top of that, what they found tearing down freeways in san francisco is that by making it harder to commute to the city, people get incentive to actually move there out of the suburbs, and more people is generally a good thing as long as they dont have cars.

It's an interesting thing, watching The Wire. I had never occurred to me that the city wants to stop people from moving out of the city, and get people coming back, because that's how they get the money to fund stuff. Having people inside the city limits, and getting them places, is in the city's best interest.

Moving freight is, too. As long as there is a way to get freight easily from the port to I-5, then having the viaduct gone is an excellent thing for the city.

I don't see getting from the port to I-5 as being too much of a problem right now

Let's not forget those poor fools from west seattle, who might have to change their view of the world!

That's pigeon hill, that's not west seattle. I mean, if you're crossing delridge, then forget it.
