The City of Bellevue is taking a renewed look at encouraging bicycling and walking to improve health, create clean neighborhoods, and boost its quality of life. With its "Walk and Roll 2007" program the Bellevue Transportation Department will be updating a 1999 plan intended to guide the city toward greater pedestrian and bicycle-friendliness.

In November 2007 the plan reached a significant milestone with the release of a draft facilities map. The Walk and Roll Draft Facilities Map shows a potential future network of bike lanes, trails, shared roadways, and other bicycle facilities. To view the map online, follow the link located below under the "Resources" heading.

Bellevue Transportation staff members have asked the community to provide them with feedback on the routes and facilities they're proposing. If you live or ride in Bellevue, please take a moment to send them your suggestions and comment, and be sure to include the following points along with your message:

Ask Bellevue to pass a "complete streets" ordinance requiring that roads being built or repaired include accommodations for bicycles and pedestrians
Tell them that cyclists need routes through downtown. While the draft facilities map currently proposes many routes that would bring cyclists to the edge of downtown, there are not enough routes passing through it to deliver riders to popular destinations
Ask that the final network be integrated with Bellevue's transit hubs
Encourage the completion of the Mountains-to-Sound Greenway
Send your comments to the Bellevue Transportation Commission at dcieri@bellevuewa.gov and CC the Walk and Roll project manager Franz Loewenherz at floewenherz@bellevuewa.gov.

They have some more meetings going on around this, including one tonight.

There is some push to make it a bunch of recreation trails with a "skeleton" set of one east-west and one north-south trail for transportation.

The more "real people" (non-spandex wearing, professional looking) cyclists that show up and push for a real transportation network for cyclists, the better.

If you want contacts over at cascade for people who are pushing for a good transportation network for bikes in bellvue, PM me and I'll hook you up.

I only ride bikes on Capitol Hill. My tight pants start chaffing me if I get further east than Cal Anderson park.

I am advocating for a paved bike path around Cal Anderson park with sharrows all the way to the Cha Cha and then down to Redwood.

Who's with me?

Jeff,
I'll advocate for finding you some less-tight pants so you can go on longer rides.
