In general, I avoid puddles (most from clogged storm drains) like the plague. I take the lane like a fool in these big rain storms because I figure what I can't see may kill me. Or at least re-arrange my face.

Well, this is more like "a cyclist wants action".
Interestingly, the PI contacted SLB to see if we had any information on this problem before they wrote the story. We gave them what we had, which wasn't much.
I think this is more a problem for easily intimidated cyclists who aren't quite confident enough to take a lane yet.
Out of curiosity, does anyone have a storm grate (or multiple grates) that bug them that they'd like see replaced? The only ones I know of are on the shoulder of I-90 just east of the snoqualmie summit.

the bus tunnel vent grates on 3rd avenue are treacherous. Just like any other steel grate. I ride out in the lane to avoid them, because that's how you do it if you're not a total fucking goober.

What about the Montlake, University, Fremont and Ballard bridges? And I'm not talking about the pedestrian lane, I'm talking about the car lanes. Those are dangerous! I once biked across the Montlake bridge in the car lanes in pouring rain and almost fell over a few times.

montlake, university, and fremont - whatever, the pedestrian path is decent and you can ride your bike over it. the ballard bridge, surprise surprise, remains a giant shithole.

Two wrecks that I have yet to partake in. Bridge deck and Grates. Been in just about every other kind though...

$500 for a replacement! WTF!
I think that's the true problem here...

$500 is cheaper than Spokane's $500-$1200 estimate when they are already tearing up the street, or $10,000 (yes, ten thousand) when there is no other work being done in that area.

I find this amazing, yet totally typical. Aren't these just forged metal? It's not like it's CNC'd titanium.
How hard would it be to drop in one where the slots are running the other way? Would it not drain the same?
I guess that wouldn't justify paying the 5 union guys for 8hrs though...

My guess is that something else about the old storm drains don't meet current requirements. They can't just drop in another grate, they need to replace the whole entrance to the storm sewer. The existing one is grandfathered in until it is messed with.
I don't really know, this is just a guess. I can't see any other way for the price to jump from $500 to $10,000.

The picture in the PI illustrates the point but riding more than 12" off the edge of the curb is still hardly "taking the lane." The photo of the Spokane drain which is more offset from the curb presents a more worrisome location.
It is not going to happen over night and it involves a lot more than a new cast grate.
500$, is not a bad price and obviously makes the most sense to be done in conjunction with other street work. the 20 fold increase to 10k, can add up quickly when you take into account, Engineering, Labor, Materials, and Administration to tear up, install an entire catch basin (not just the grate), re-pave the street, re-pour a concrete slab for the side walk. Mobilizing a back hoe, dump truck, jack hammer, asphalt truck, concrete truck, all to put in one replaced catch basin.

Don't forget South Park! Although I suspect the major worry there is that it will just fall into the Duwamish one of these days.
Actually, I want to know what to do about the upside down storm grate on the path between Mary Gates and Sieg that I pass almost every day. I tried to pick it up and flip it over, but my wimpy arms were not up to the task.

Or email the SDOT Bike & Ped spot fix address. Probably faster to get a crowbar and an extra set of hands though.

Their online form seems to demand that problems be indoors. We'll see what happens.

NOTE: I have found it significantly satisfying to have crumbly parts of my commute repaired in less than two days after filling out their webform. Few things work so well.

I walked outside, and the drain cover was in its proper position. I deduce that all FS Works requests are fixed instantaneously. Who knew?

I sent in an email about the F'd up situation on Alaska, right infront of the Coast Guard facility. That 100yd stretch is a deathtrap!
Take 1st.
Alaska/marginal sucks and was another of those "put cyclists over there out of sight out of mind" concepts.
They put a bike path out there with no plans to maintain it and only the hope that it would remove cyclists from traffic. That route has some of the most poorly planned flow control of any bike path design in seattle.

The spot I told them about just needs a front-loader to grade out the potholes on the shoulder and a street-sweeper to clean up all the gravel. Alaska isn't that bad, and I prefer the semi-trucks to the freeway on-ramp traffic at 7am. At least the semi-trucks expect me to be there and give wide clearance (usually)
