I just got to the airport in SJC.

The bike rack (with my three locks attached) has been removed.
Fucking hell.

The cop dealing with traffic points out the new bike rack on the oter side of the terminal. My locks are no place.

Taxi ride back to work to get emergancy backup U-lock, while I leave my bike sitting unlocked. Made it. Gaah.

Here is a question that the SDOT folks have put to the SBAB prople.

How do they figure out when u-locks are abandoned vs. still in occasional use?

Should we be putting our phone # on our locks so they can call us and give us a week before they remove the rack or cut off our locks?

If they put colored tape over the key hole for a week, is that enough time and enough of an indicator?

They don't want to be asses about it, but sometimes they need to move the rack, it gets damaged or something, and they don't have a good way to handle it.

.

colored tape with a "remove or call this #" message printed on it would be ideal

Sucks for you Joby, why 3 locks? for super lockdown when you are in Seattle?

Posting a warning a week in advance should be ample. How many city bike racks have permanent u-locks on them? Seems like most would be at places of employment and as such on private property with the exception of Seattle Municipal Tower. Who pays rent to store private property on public property?

Probably the same rules as for cars. You have to move them every 3 days if parked on a public street, right? So put up a sign for 3 days, then impound the bikes such that someone calling the police to ask "WTF?" will be able to re-acquire their ride.

bummer! 3 locks? what, one for each wheel and one for the frame?

hindsight being 20/20; maybe use a paint pen and print your name and contact # if removal is required.

This is the bike I leave at the airport, sometimes for 5 days at a streach. 3 locks is resonable I think.
I'll try to get the locks back, but I've been commuting this way for 18 months. If it ends up costing me $100 in locks, that's not such a bad deal. Just sicked for today.

So, what, we have long term car parking near the airport but no long term bike parking? I usually take the bus to the airport and haven't really looked at the bike facilities there yet.

I'd second the suggestion of sticking a sticker with "In case removal is needed, lock and bike is owned by [name], call ###" on the locks.

Can you make me a sticker? I'm too lazy to do that. Or maybe bring some whiteout...

In the case of on-street parking, usually everyone but the driver. However, many, if not most, drivers do put a nominal amount into curb parking meters on some of the occasions when they venture downtown.

Um, it's a sticker...get something sticky and a permanent marker. Mailing labels, floppy disk labels, or even a piece of masking tape will do.

In the past, I would have suggested getting an engraving / etching tool and carving your phone # in it, but people seem to lazy to do that these days too.

How about a luggage tag looped through the lock(s)?

It seems like that would make sense to the airport cops.

Sheesh... sucks, that. Glad you didn't lose your bike in the process though.

I suppose putting phone # on the long-term locks is the best idea.. "please call..."

Even so, the expense is still far, far less than owning a car. The inconvenience however... fecking lame.
