If, between Mass and before the race, you want to booze & eat, my friends and I are doing a belated birthday thing at Elysian on Cap Hill. Just sayin...

I spotted a few of you as CM passed down 1st while I was walking my post-op dog.

SurlyKat: "Why aren't you on your bike?"
Me: "Because my dog just had surgery!"
Everyone: "AWWWWWWW"

Sad to miss CM but Eli had a rather large hemotoma in his ear removed today and needs some company.

I know I derailed this thread but I love my dog so suck it.

It was a very fun mass, I brought my friend Kendra along, it was her time and she just LOVED it. Hopefully I'll get her to come out to some .83 rides too.

We dropped off mid-cap-hill, where'd the group go after that?

<edit> - forgot to mention this earlier

After we dropped the group, while waiting for traffic to clear a little car pulled up to us and asked what all the cyclists were doing. Thirty seconds of explanation and the gal driving the car was jubilantly enthusiastic about the whole thing.

</edit>

I was totally bummed because I was stuck at work until 6:30, and then on my way home, there went mass, so i joined up. Fun times. I ditched out as the crowd headed towards volunteer park, but about half the mass disappeared somewhere on cap hill, so I was hardly the only one. I then had a delicious sandwich at the roanoke, and almost went to the Henry for an opening.

I heard something about an undercover cop and drama? Kevin? J? anyone want to comment?

At 5th and Virginia a guy got out of his car (a white mercury, IIRC) and started saying the usual blah blah and when that didn't work he invoked "police, move!" After that failed as well he went back into his car and I'm not sure what else happened.

Kind of a confusing situation...

I jumped in front of his car as he was moving forward when the light changed and then jumped over to the next car as someone came up to help out. The guy was adversarial and said what we were doing was illegal.

The guy was a jerk, but he was also SPD. He had a badge.

So I kinda want to write a letter to SPD explaining what happened, it was technically an abuse of authority, he had no right leaving a vehicle while it was running and flashing his badge like that.

but... at the same time... SPD are just about the nicest most tolerant and amazingly pro-bike movement police force that I have ever encountered... so... I kinda wanted to phrase it nice and informative rather than adversarial...

I have had such positive interactions with SPD so.... of course some of them hate cyclists... but... some massers are dickheads...

I dunnknow... I told him he was abusing his power and he kinda got grumpy and got in his car and got on the phone, but nothing came of it...

s more than anything... aside from being kinda confusing... I think he probably got on the phone and figured he could bring the wrath of cop down on us... and ended up getting a surprise, as I haven't heard of any repercussions. I suspect he is his own worst enemy as he is probably frustrated that none of his rantings to the dispatcher produced anything.

I don't care about the sheriffs or wsp. But the one group I don't want to aggravate is SPD. They are just better than average quality law enforcement...

All in all... cars were jerky tonight, many cars purposefully bumped bikes. I counted at least 4-5 times different cars knowingly moved forward to make contact. The woman on first when we were headed northbound surged forward and hit some guys leg. It was nasty. I'm a lot more concerned with that type of situation.

I think the off duty cop (I don't think he was undercover, I think he was headed home) was just a minor situation better forgotten. The people hitting bikes... that was more of a concern.

Then again maybe it was just a full moon.

oh christ I'm rambling... eeeek...bad etiquette

a pedestrian got mowed down on 1st & Main by one of the Massers. Pretty asian girl, she screamed in pure fear as she went to the ground with a bike on top of her. Hope she was okay.

mass ended at Volunteer Park, it was cold and good.

i am more surprised at pedestrian-bike interactions this mass.

like the guy that stumbled into my path flailing his arms around 1st and lenora.

that was weird.

Sounds fun! Sigh … another month goes by that I haven’t been to Mass. Been hearing about it for well over a year but something else always seems to come up last minute. (Won’t bore you with yesterday’s excuses. :) Already know I can’t in Feb; will be outta town... but who knows, maybe March...

Anyway, hi peoples! My first post here. Been lurking here off n' on for a couple months and I figgr'd it was time to say hi. Mostly a mountain biker these days, but also have a long habit/love for road biking, including about one n’ a half years as a messenger in DC in the early ‘90s. Looking to get more/back into road biking. And hopefully, eventually, work towards doing some more overnight tours (only done one in my life, many years ago). Like maybe the STP, stuff on the Oly Peninsula, or who knows, maybe in further afar lands...

Anyway so WTF’s this deal with cars *intentionally* hitting riders during Mass?? Does that happen at most Masses? I’d always heard about the verbal confrontations, but damn… I’m assuming these intentional hits were against bikers who were going outta their ways to be antagonistic?

Yeah, lots of aggression for sure. But the worst one was possibly the bus driver on Broadway (driving bus #3655, on route 49) who almost hit someone. (I forget who it was, but it's someone I know...)

We should report her to Metro.

I'm kicking myself for not printing up a bunch of "Honk if you like bikes" signs. That seemed to work really well to dampen the driver angst and made it a much more jovial time.

Out of curiosity, are there any newer flyers for CM besides the ones up on www.seattlecriticalmass.org?

SurlyKat it was a route 60 bus not 49. I was also thinking of reporting that driver to metro as well.

Dave from the slowsundayz rides.

Oh, ok. Thanks. I was too busy memorizing the bus # and just assumed it was a 49. We should all report her.

Yes.

More fun signs. Less aggression.
More music. Less running over hot asian girls.

I know CM has no stated goals, but we should reallllyyyyy strive for "to have a positive vibe" rather than "to have a riot on wheels."

Yeah, I agree. I had a bad dream on Thursday where I was getting a ride in a car to pick up my bike. But I mentioned to these two women that were driving me that I was going to ride in critical mass, so they threw something at me, but I managed to dodge it and then talked to them about the positives and negatives about CM. Then I started riding my bike and if I remember correctly they may have rode past me and honked at me. whew.

WOW...a Metro bus driver being aggressive against bikers!?!

Y'all "think" a report should be filed?

duh!

That's a blatant violation of their policies and she should be reprimanded or fired. There's NO good reason for behavior like that from a public employee...none!

I can understand the off duty SPD acting like a dork, but putting peoples lives at risk is inexcusable.

...I miss ALL the "good" masses!

I was definitely shocked by the unusual amount of aggression by both pedestrians and drivers. *shrug* I think it was just one of those off things.

As for the bus driver on Broadway. Um. Yeah. That was fucked up and absolutely must be reported by as many people as possible who saw it. Write a mature letter with any and all information you have.

When I was younger there was this bus driver that used to be outrageously mean to kids on their way home from school. She would talk bad, she wouldn't let us off at the back door and sometimes she just wouldn't stop at our bus stops when we pulled the bell. I wrote metro twice, totally outraged by her actions and viola! she didn't drive that route anymore.

Speak up! Talk loud. People will hear you.

Besides these weird vibes I thought it was a grand time, as always. A wonderful turnout for January.

My personal highlights:
The guy with the boom box playing Damian Marley and Manu Chao!
Riding the ghetto drome in Seattle Center
Starting the ride back up!
The kid corking on 5th doing handstands and performing for the cars (he also was spitting fire at Volunteer Park)

Yeay, Critical Mass!
