It's that time of year again, our big yearly race the 3rd Annual FHR (FUCKING HILLS RACE). 830am on Sunday February 24th meet up at Alaskan and Washington under the viaduct for registration and bibs. We'll be getting on the 9:35 ferry (leaving at 9ish for the ferry).
7 bucks to race, and you pay your own way onto the ferry (7 dollars, includes trip back to seattle). The 7 dollars goes to supply the chili feed at the end, which we will make damn sure we have enough of this year (veg and meaty), and as cash money prizes. We try to make this a heavy heavy bike schwag prize event. Last year everyone walked away with something, from a full size chrome bag down to socks. We'll be trying to make sure there are just as many prizes this year.
It's a fantastic fun ride, EVERYONE is encouraged to ride. Even if you aren't in it to win, it's just fun to get out there and have a long ride. Bainbridge is beautiful, it's a great challenging course, and you get chili and prizes.
More details and prize info will be posted here as it's available.
Sponsors will be added as they come in, have something you want to donate for prizes or know a business contact that might be willing to donate? talk to me, would love the help. left over bike parts (new and used), gift certificates, etc. talk to anyone that you know that would be in a position to help out.
Things we'll need help with at this point are:
1. Gathering prizes
2. Working the finish line (set up tent, chili, keep track of who comes in)
3. Night before the race pick up tons of bread from the ever giving bakeries
4. Pirate flag purchasing
5. Copy the picture and spread the word on myspace, messages boards, bicycle community sites, etc.
Get a hold of me with any questions about any of that.

Man, I was hoping for the Enron Fucking Hills Race, brought to you by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Anyhoo, I'm likely in for finish line tending, along with Omar and Emmett. Subject to my wife getting her act together and actually going on an actual loop of Bainbridge Island that day.

greg, that will be awesome if you could do that again. my mom lives nearby the finish line, and we might be having the chili and prizes delivered by car this year.. ill keep you (or whoever works it) in the loop and posted as things develop
fuck the hills race (aka getting drunk in winslow, or whatever) is encouraged. please be extra surly.

I see they advertise as a race. I thought racing was illegal under the RCW? No permit filed to race, not a closed course, wonder about insurance, I'm thinking not any.
Not that Bainbridge Police might notice in the throng of people. But if there was a accident between one of the Other Group and ,say, a eight year old girl out with her mom, could a insurance company lawyer argue that the Other Group member and the Other Group organizing committee conspired to hold illegal activity on these public roads without any consideration for the safety of other road users? Wouldn't that make any charges against them criminal, not just a traffic accident?
Unless that Other Club was incorporated, I'd think that would make the organizing/ organizer personally liable for any civil fees, medical costs, or criminal charges caused by or related to any person "racing".

Over a beer with some of those dudes (not the particular one you quoted), someone sporting a pirate flag was taking their food without paying and being an ass about it on some CBC organized event.
Odd thing is that until a few months ago, Leo Stone wasn't a CBC member.
Meh. People will take a single bad encounter and make up their mind and refuse to consider evidence to the contrary.
For the sake of argument, https://www.bikeleague.org doesn't seem to require much or charge much for bike club liability insurance.

...I'm still trying to decide if I can handle the humiliation of simultaniously being the last person to finish and the person who reaches the highest speeds on the downhills...though Trev might have better areodynamics and be able to whoop my weight to power ratio.
A year or two ago, I passed 50mph on one of those hills.

If you'd like to dual register so that the 8 year olds to whom leo stone deals pirate candy will sue the CBC, you've got until the 13th to have the registration pack mailed to you free.
Active.com sticks on a $3 processing fee, but presumably the other $22 (go on the ferry with us!) will go into the advocacy coffers.

Just watch it on Halls Hill Rd. Cascade gets quite cranky if you have to use their ambulance.

Interesting thread.
No, I do not hate point83.
So why then did I post those questions on the CBC board?
I thought them valid questions to ask. These forums are the place to ask questions and debate ideas.
I don't know if point83 had ever considered what could happen should someone get hurt and could some of the situations I've described happen. My own club (not cascade) had some legal issues some years ago were we went to a holdharmless agreement and insurance for rides we do , just because of the posibilities of legal action against us.
If nothing else, you might want to check out if point83 could be held harmless or would end up holding the bag. Insurance is cheap. Worth the money to ask your Lawyer a couple of questions rather than having someone elses Lawyer asking you a lot of questions.
I must admit, some small joy getting your goat with that post, but I don't have a serious beef with point83. I really think some of the things your club have done are very outstanding. The Ghost Bikes, the support of CM, and Seattle likes Bikes, come to mind.
But to abamfici, you might want to not post things that suggest that I'd sell dope to kids. Could get you into some real issues with that.
I do owe a beer to a couple of you... when I deliver it I'll explain why.
gears to you, see you on the Chilly Hilly....leo

Yes, especially if noted parties don't quite grasp satire, on the internet.
Also, way to qualify your statements with passive aggressive subsequent statements; doubly so, even:

This adds quite a bit to your tone and further endears you to us. Now, I understand that your last (pink) statement may actually be a wholly friendly one but due to the context in which it is delivered one could easily see it as segue into some further passive aggressive advise but this time over beer.

Think you're reading a little more than I'm writing.
The invite that I owe a beer for unexplained reasons to un-named members is quite above board and for reasons other than bike club politics.
My request that I not be accused of selling dope to kids? I don't think this is unreasonable. I do not offer personal insult to anyone, at least while on the 'net. One should be very careful with satire, as it can be mis-understood and thought to be insult.
But, the legal issues of your FHR is more interesting .

Contradictions! As you can tell from our behavior, we're actually only 8 years old. Giving us beers is about the same as selling dope to kids.

leo, if you think about it long enough, you'll realize you're being a cranky old asshat. please think about it until you come to that realization, if you dont come to that realization, you havent thought about it long enough. as much as i enjoy a good tirade, you aren't going to stop anything with yours
for everyone else, ill make sure that we have enough candy for everyone to hand out candy to all the kids along the ride. (that's for you Michael Perry)

Just in case, I'll be displaying both the CBC bib and pirate flag, but my fast bike might not be tuned up in time and I *really* don't want road rash so I'll probably take it slower this year.
I forget if it was the other side of Baker or if it was Halls Hill Rd where I hit the insane speed. The conditions were perfect, nice new high speed pavement, it was dry, the sun was out, and there was little or no wind. I do remember the volunteers yelling to warn me of the 90 degree turn at the bottom which I took at 25 or 30 mph. At the time, I was only flying CBC colors and hadn't yet discovered Point83.
For those CBC folks (Hi Leo) who are worried about cyclist vs. cyclist crashes, I try really hard to give a generous amount of space between me and the cyclists that I am passing, I do have brakes and I do use them.

I have a '70s schwinn 10-speed tandem with steel wheels, and a 90's "Motive" Mountain tandem that has out-of-sync timing chainrings (the stoker pedals more slowly). You're welcome to borrow either.
