Cascade Bicycle Club's very own David Hiller will be appearing on KVI 570 AM today from 4 PM – 5 PM, and he needs backup. Can I count on you to call in and support David and the greater cause of bikeability in the Puget Sound region?
The numbers are 206-421-5757 or 1-888-312-5757.
The hosts invited David on to discuss this morning's front-page Seattle Times article about “bike boxes” – the bike-only zones at intersections that the City of Seattle is experimenting with. This being talk radio, we can assume that the hosts will attempt to gin up controversy and some anti-bike sentiment. Let's show them how bike-friendly this area is by calling in and giving David a boost.
It worked last time. During David's appearance last year on KIRO 710, 100% of the calls were pro-bike, thanks to the actions of this list.
If you get on, feel free to draw on these talking points:
Anything that we can do to encourage bicycling, we should do. Bicycles take up very little space on the road, don't pollute our neighborhood, and save society money.
Bike boxes address the most common type of bike-car crash – the right hook. Safety should always be our top priority.
We're proud of Seattle's role as a leader in bike-friendly design. The City should continue to experiment with engineering treatments like bike boxes and colored bicycle lanes, the first of which is due to be unveiled in Seattle this year.
While we support bike-friendly engineering, we should also make sure that motorists understand the rights of cyclists on the road. Bicyclists have all the rights and responsibilities as motorists – including the right to use the full travel lane if necessary. This typically happens if the bike lane has debris in it, if the cyclist needs to take a left turn, or if for any reason the cyclist does not feel safe riding farther to the right. The law does not require cyclists to stay in the bike lane.
206-421-5757 or 1-888-312-575, 4PM-5PM.

I remembered this information all wrong and have been listening to KVI for the past FIVE MINUTES!
Oh, woeful mistake! Woeful me!
About to tune into something good on Pandora.com to get over this dreadful error. Then will tune in to listen to David Hiller later of course.

I'd rather get hit by a car than listen to KVI for an hour.

OMG. did you just hear that caller who was basically bragging about almost nailing a cyclist recently (and seemingly proud)? and saying that if we want to trust our lives to him, go ahead!?!
I don't get that riled up about this stuff that much, but Jesus!!! I might have to call in.

Wow. Most of these callers are completely chodetarded.
I never thought I would side with Ken Schram, but the dude is being pretty reasonable.

I was really hoping that was going to be a certain Laura from Seattle calling in, not Laura the truck driver from Puyallup.

i don't know about the commentary, but with all those great ad spots i'm seriously thinking about investing in the long term durability of modern day vinyl windows.
just look for the big blue sign that says, "CARPET, CARPET, CARPET."

Last observation: This is my first time listening to KVI and DAMN that shit has too many commercials. NPR and KEXP have set my tolerances for commercial content way too low.
Even if the content were decent, there is so little of it that I am at a loss to understand why people would ever listen to it when fully half of this airtime is given over to obnoxious ads.
