Drugs are fine - driving and texting is dangerous.

For me, it's the combination of texting to sell poppers and then running down a cyclist in the most horrid manner possible. Getting hit from behind or broadsided is bad, but having a vehicle come at you like that, head on, would be similar to the 2 minutes and 45 seconds of free fall the Challenger astronauts experienced after their crew capsule survived the initial vehicle breakup. Just a very long "oh, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitttttt..." and then splat. Only much shorter for the kid.
And all that because he was trying to sell poppers, bars, whatever; essentially the lowest form of recreational drugs. If he had been jacked up on coke after a 5 day bender it would have been better for the kid, in my ever so humble opinion.
Getting mowed down at 14 by a lowlife. Ah, I love our existential world!

If our driver was selling herb, would that have been different? What if he was selling PBR?

Yes, yes it would be. That it was poppers makes it a final dollop of in indignity on what is a many-layered shit sundae.

hmmmm i've read that article twice now and see no mention of amyl nitrate...
So I'm about 5 miles from Huntington Beach and I'm riding down to Newport Beach tomorrow then riding to Pasadena to watch the end of the Tour. The people down here are car NUTS. I have been almost run down six times. Then I noticed all the dish washers, hotel workers, etc. They ride on the side walks none of this taking the lane shit. Well when in Rome...
There are some nice bike paths that run down the rivers, more like storm drains. I will take the light rail up to LA to ride to Pasadena, so you can get around but it is way dangerous and everybody drives very fast.
Wish I wasn't missing the FHR. Everybody have fun!

The last time I was there I rode a century from my parents' place in San Bernardino County down to the beach. Santa Ana River Trail was great. The roads were hit or miss. 4 lane or fewer roads (2 lanes each way), I could take the lane, even during rush hour, plus they had a wide shoulder. But 6+ lane roads (pretty common) were pretty much nightmares. Speed limit is 45 at least, and everyone treats them as speedways. Suburbia sucks.

It seems that all the roads are six lanes with 45 mph speed limits and people driving at 55 mph. I have been taking the sidewalk and since nobody walks in LA, the sidewalks are empty.
Laura I will find out what I can about Lebowski ride maybe at the bicycle kitchen.

Ro,
The riding will get easier when you're in LA. My advice is to avoid the boulevards as much as possible and stick to the side streets. If you must ride on the blvds, avoid the following: San Vicente (anywhere), Wilshire (near westwood and beverly hills-otherwise okay), Santa Monica (from beverly hills to the 405), Sunset (around westwood), 3rd (around park la brea). Venice blvd has a bike lane that I believe runs its entire extent. If you have the chance, pick up a streetwise map or some such and use it to figure out the least trafficky route. If you need anything, let me know!
