My bike was stolen on Saturday 02.23 between 12:15pm and 2:15pm from the bike rack on the western side of UW's Kane Hall. It's a 2005 Giant FCR2, Large, Black, flat handle bar. Serial number CN500313.
If you see or hear anything, please call me (Doug) at 206.409.5005. Thanks for the help! Here's a photo of my bike in a bathroom:

I blame the card-carrying members of the ACLU.

Oh no! What kind of lock were you using? After recently reading this article I'm all sorts of fearful of "long" U-Locks
and locking to a lower half of the frame where the ground could be used for leverage
Sorry for the loss. Hopefully you've got a spare bike for the FHR? Maybe you'll win the wheelset...

The best tip on the website Kevin linked to: ride a rubbish bike. Seriously, it's probably the best theft deterrent and definitely the least employed by serious bicyclists. Doug, your experience is an excellent case in point (not that you're to blame for what happened, btw). You had an expensive, eye-catching bike. Had your bike been a POS, or resembled a POS anyway, it would not have attracted the notice of thieves who likely do not spend much time scrutinizing a bike before they decide to take it. My daily rider survived for years locked up on the UW campus, downtown, etc. precisely because, I believe, it looked like trash. When you get a new bike, buy two: a sweet ride you don't plan to leave unattended and something that looks like junk for times when you need to lock it up.
In any case, it sucks that you got your bike stole, man.

I understand what you are saying Joe and it is a solution, the ultimate actualization of such solution then is to buy a bus pass and quit biking. I think they even suggest that in the article.
That is a race to the bottom and essentially a consent to being a victim. I'm not doing 7,000 miles a year on a rubbish bike. I commute around 30 miles a day. I also train on my commute. A rubbish bike would really suck.
The problem is the UW police do not do their job. It was next to Kane hall in the middle of the day for chrissakes!
Further, how apathetic that no student reported it as it was occurring.
When it comes down to it, bike theft is caused because americans do not consider bicycles a true means of transportation.
The solution is for bikes to be treated equally to cars. We have grand theft auto, there should be grand theft bike. That will be a real solution.
In addition it is imperative that every victim of bike theft make use of the police to the fullest extent. Increased public complaints of bike theft will result in a greater focus by law enforcement agencies.

And 15 year old girls deserve to get raped cause they dress slutty.
Sorry, that's stupid.
Park your bike up high, keep it with you, pile it up with others, cable your wheels.
Just be smart.
FUCK BIKE THIEVES!

Grand Theft Alternative Transportation.
Just, you know, for the added variety that mini-scooters, ponies and kayaks would provide.
and segways.
Even though they're not actually transportation...
