on that note, when you are under 30 is the cheapest time to lock in life insurance. We're talking under $20/mo for 250,000. Don't run the risk that the driver's insurance will cover it, or that they even have any.

When you come to the point in life where life insurance makes sense (hint: if you have no dependents, you haven't reached that point yet), might I suggest you learn about life insurance from a vaguely neutral source, such as Consumer Reports, as opposed, to, say, someone whose job it is to sell life insurance.

If only I knew someone who sold life insurance. If there's anyone who knows, could they send them my way? I have a ton of money burning a whole in my pocket from the lucrative job I now hold.
SRSLY, I am a bajillionaire.

Like Consumer Reports is going to smoke you out when you get approved for a policy that secures your mortgage for when you get mowed down by a car... I'm sure Bryce's family wouldn't have had any problem with a six-digit check coming their way.
Srsly though, for what it's worth Life Insurance has a great ratio of return, usually better than most Mutual Funds. Get an Accidental Death rider and your coverage is doubled...
But what do I know, I'm just another brainless salesman.

If you have a mortgage, paying it off when you die is only important if you have dependents. Otherwise, who cares (besides your bank)? And sure, a six-digit check is always nice, but, by the same logic, I should be playing the lottery every week, since a 7+-digit check would be even nicer.
What's life insurance for? So that when you die, no one you care about suffers financially as a side-effect. It could be used secondarily as an investment, but if you're interested in investing, again, you're better off reading about it yourself, or going to an investment counselor who can point you to a wide variety of investment tools, not an insurance salesman who only has one tool to choose from. Maybe the counselor or your research will lead you to choose life insurance as part of your portfolio, in which case, by all means, talk to Chris Langston.
And I'm not saying you're brainless. I'm saying you have an obvious vested interest in selling insurance, and are thus not a neutral party.

I feel for Bryce, his family and his friends. I shook hands with his father at the memorial ride. How would prosecuting the truck driver help anything? From the reports at the time, as I recall, he was in tears over what happened. If he was signaling, wasn't speeding or driving recklessly, then while he is at fault, I don't think any sort of actual charges, felony or otherwise, are in order.
Get the truck company's insurance for whatever is appropriate (how do you put a value on a life?), but leave the driver alone. I'm betting the driver is a just a dude who screwed up and will have to live with that for the rest of his life.
people make mistakes all the time and have to suffer the consequences for them. it's sad, yeah, but it's still the way things go. but maybe even more than that, we need to stop the idea that you can kill a cyclist, and people will be so busy fawning over how hard it must be for you to live with yourself now, that no one bothers to notice you have committed a crime. I don't think this is a felony, but at minimum this guy should have his license revoked for life.
I don't buy "it's really haaard to see bikes in a big truck" as a justification for killing someone. if there's a problem, it needs to be fixed asap. it doesn't excuse what happened, and continues to happen. I remember people going "he's probably going to lose his job over this" well yeah he should lose his job. if you can't keep from killing people while driving your truck, you should lose the privilige.

But as recently demonstrated, it may not matter in this city if a pedestrian gets killed in a crosswalk while the driver is on a cellphone or if a cyclist (or two) get run over by a dump truck and one is killed.
Really, what in the hell?
Accountability? Anyone?

By the way, the Bicycle Master Plan calls for a road diet on Nickerson.
...and there seems to be some disconnect between the county prosecuting attorney and the city prosecuting attorney about bicycle issues. I am not anywhere near informed enough about how that whole mess works (or dosen't).
