I've never played with sketchup. I'll take a look.
The tricky thing about switchbacks on a steep hill is that you have to move a *lot* of earth to make the landing. Otherwise you end up with a turn that's not ridable.

What if the staircase weren't in the way and the downhill trail ended under the Emerson bridge or maybe even past the bridge and around the bend a bit? A long ramp might be ADA happy and enough reason to remove the stairs.

Not to derail this great Ballard Bridge discussion, but spray paint markers have gone down on Stone Way. If you have a chance, go scout it out and yell if you see something completely fubared on the northbound direction. I didn't notice paint on the southbound direction yet.
My guess is sometime in the next 5 rain-free days, the paint crews will be out to make it a done deal.

As long as we're throwing out random ideas, how about going diagonally NNW from the top of the staircase to the north end of the retaining wall?
Assuming there is such a north end. I've really got to check this site out myself next time I'm in the area. It seems like the city ought to be able to do something without building a new bridge, and maybe we could find a way to nudge them in the right direction.
Kevin's point about the ADA is a great one, too. I doubt the bridge sidewalk is ADA compliant even if you fix the 'onramps', but partial ADA compliance benefits lots of folks, including folks with strollers, hand carts and, oh yeah, bicycles.

Heh. That's an interesting idea. I think the wall goes on for a really long while, but running the path in the reverse direction would allow it be longer, since it could extend back under the bridge.

I would hate to see the staircase be removed. My dad has a condition that limits his mobility, he has to conserve his energy. Stairs take less energy to walk up than a ramp plus there is a handrail. I'm sure that there are other people like him who value those stairs and would like to see them stay.
I salute you guys for tackling this problem head on. The city seams like they can't do much of anything for them selves. I see too many cyclists riding in traffic and not paying attention to every car around them. I hope one day we can have safe trails through out this city.

They spray painted western avenue last fall, and it has almost all faded away.

Looking south at the underpass:
Looking north from well south of the underpass. It would be easy for the city to connect the bridge to thorndyke, which would get people to The Elliot bay trail without getting back on 15th.

Maybe I'm confused, but isn't the curb cut a recent "upgrade"
I seem to remember it wasn't that far back I saw it the first time and said
"thank god I don't have to lift my friggin bike over the curb anymore."
There I was thinking I was gettin all spoiled and stuff.

It's been there for at least the past few years.
It's better than nothing, but it's still pretty bad.
