Because we all don't ride enough as it is.

There's been a ride leaving Red Square on Wednesdays at 7ish for the past couple of months. It's composed mainly of Fast Friday people who like to put miles down and have a good time. All are welcome, as long as you don't mind seeing kids do dorky tricks on their bikes. I don't.

But would the kids mind seeing dorky, non-Fast-Friday people riding with them and their coolness?

I rode a bike with a freewheel and they called me a F*g. They used the really cliche, "NICE FREEWHEEL F*G!" It hurt my feelings, so I went home. But the guy that said that, lives at my house.

I rode with them last week with gears and all. It was a solid group of rad people who were down for a grand boozin' ride. They even waited for me when I had a mechanical...and they looked really cool and hip when doing so. I'll probably be back with them next week, however I might try to spray paint my gears invisible.

why would they call you "fog?" that just doesn't even make sense.

Lovely. But the difference is that you're a young, pretty girl. Young, pretty girls get all kinds of special dispensation while hanging out with "cool and hip" guys. YOU are who they want to attract.

I, on the other hand, might wreck their cool and hip vibe and keep the young, pretty girls away.

Yes, I've probably taken this way too seriously and dramatically over-thought it. But I had fun doing it, at least.

have you seen his moustache? It screams "trying too hard" just like any good hip accessory should. E.g: Bikes with carbon fiber wheels, deep V wheels, girl pants, bike hats, knickers, heavy glasses, beards, etc etc.

(please note that I qualify for several of those)

It's funny, one of the guys said he tried to ride pointy-three but everyone acted too "cool" to talk to him.

A bike group is a bike group and these guys don't give a shit what kind you ride as long as you're good company and you can keep a decent pace.

Every now and then I've seen a couple younger looking dudes with fixed gears show up and stand near, but not with, us in red square and then ride near, but not with, us for the first while or so.

Maybe that was him? I mean I'm friendly, but you gotta actually make social contact...

I've seen this too. We greet some, but not all people who randomly show up. It helps if you post that you are coming, and then bother to introduce yourself. Sure, we could be friendlier, but then we wouldn't be Point83 either. At some point(83), the new person has to try to fit in rather than just hang on. Otherwise, we have no idea who you are, which means you aren't with us. We're glad you're riding a bike, but seriously...

This is what I'm talking about. Just because some Fast Friday kid didn't run up and give you a hug just for showing up doesn't mean they're all assholes. You can blame it on them being "hipsters" or "fixie fags" all you want, but the reality is that most of them are just people who are really into bikes.

Uncle Martha, I'm sure it's easier to degrade someone instead of talking to them. Fast Friday has it's share of assholes just like Point83. It's still just a bunch of people who love bikes and riding them. Enjoy the true bike lovers and ignore the assholes. Just like when I hang with you guys. Hang out or don't. It makes no difference to me.

I think you'll find the answer is that your assesment and mine is correct. We aren't fucking Toastmasters. We do a great job of telling everyone where we get drinks before the ride. Show up 30 minutes earlier there and have a beer. It's easier to introduce yourself when you walk up to a table and you're the only one standing instead of riding up to the edge of a circle and then standing silently outside of it avoiding all eye contact.

I'm sorry if I came across as degrading the FF kids, it certainly wasn't my intention.

I don't dispute that every group has its assholes, and I'm sure that we all make occasional rotations through that position whether we know it or not. However, I can certainly identify with the people who feel like they're getting the cold shoulder when they come on Point83 rides. I usually (95% of the time?) try to be friendly to new people on the rides, but I agree that there is a certain responsibility incumbent upon the new people to make an effort of some kind.

Anyway, I've got Wednesday evenings free (usually), I may well tag along one of these weeks and see how it goes.

I just think it's sweet that a person can go ride a bike all night three days in a row.

Hipsters don't spend their bar time discussing the advantages of using Div tags/CSS instead of table based interfaces.

Mustache ≠ saving throw vs. geek

Though it is a good try. Riding a bike is pretty geeky, too.

Hey Humpday was the best so it's being revived! Strangelove and I will be there at the same time and place. If I won't be that fast and for some unconventional reason some won't really wait and I won't have a phone that's fine, as long as this happens again for the following weeks, with or without a Bryan.
