also, I'm originally from the area and considering going back for grad school this fall. for those who bike commute to UW, I'd love any details on your location/commute time and other vague notions to guide my housing search

I'm around 3 miles away, in Wedgwood, and it basically takes me 15 minutes to get to the UW. For that matter, it basically takes me 5 minutes per mile almost anywhere in Seattle. Stop lights and traffic even things out.
My advice in finding a place: make up a list of stuff you absolutely must have, and what's important but you're willing to live without. Not just stuff in your apartment/house/whatever (like electricity and bathrooms) but also stuff nearby (like grocery stores, bars, restaurants, parks...). Then you can quickly skip places that don't have the things you need, as well as easily compare those that do.
