A few of us have noticed off and on that there are trucks parked in the bike lane, blocking the bike lane, in front of the PCC, Epi apartments, and Baja Fresh.
Cranked Mag even wrote a little piece on it recently.
I talked to the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, they had their Safety Committee meeting today, and they knew about the problem but they redefined it for me. There is a truck loading zone in front of Pete's Coffee, but people ignore the little sign and yellow curb paint and park 3-4 cars in that space often enough and long enough that trucks can't use it....so they use the next space they find (or are told to use the next nearest space) which is the bike lane.
The Fremont Chamber of Commerce is pushing for better SPD enforcement and is asking SDOT to improve the sign and paint to make it easier to enforce. I will bring it up at the SBAB meeting, but it would help if more people can put their voice behind these requests.
It is kind of a dumb small thing, but it is more constructive than yelling at the truck drivers or the business management. It also happens right in front of some of the brand new wayfinding signs.

Oh hai, who should we be telling how irritating/unsafe this is?

I think SUZIE BURKE needs to be informed of this blatant illegal behavior PRONTO and get the fremont neighboorhood council mobilized to complain to SPD about these miscreants!

I'm going to ask the Bike & Ped SDOT folks tonight. I'm not sure who the right SDOT contact is.
As far as SPD, it is the same parking enforcement line that we know and love.

While it won't hurt any to talk about this in political forums, I doubt it will do any good. We already have the laws and rules we need for this problem.
THE TRUCKS ARE PARKED ILLEGALLY. That's all there is to it. SPD is actually pretty good about enforcement if you are a little persistent.
If you find somebody blocking a bike lane and you can possibly afford the time, make it your project to ruin their day.
1) Call SPD at 625-5011. Describe the illegal parking. Stress that it is creating "An immediate and severe safety hazard". Mention that people are being forced in to oncoming traffic.
2) Call The company that owns the truck. make a huge screaming overblown deal out of it. "SOMBODY COULD DIE THIS AFTERNOON YOU NEED TO COME DOWN HERE AND DEAL WITH YOUR TRUCK RIGHT NOW OMG"
3) Stay there until the police come. Be polite, but urge them to order towing.
4) Take lots of pictures. Of the truck. Of the license plate. Of the driver's face.
This really really does work. When I was commuting down Marginal way, I 100% eliminated bike-lane parking by doing this just a few times.

5. Implement the use of the "unscrew the pin in air fill thingy" YOUR MOM
handed out a month back. Use on all illegally parked vehicles (Trucks as well as cars parked in the loading zone).

Yeh, then they'll DEFINITELY move faster.
BTW, advocating vandalism that could possibly endanger someone's life probably isn't a great idea to post on the internetz, just sayin. even tho these asshats are endangering ours. *grumble*

i'm pretty sure flat tires are safer than inflated ones.

flats make your car (or bicycle) handle differently, particularly at high speeds. to flatten someone's tires is endangerment, albeit pretty low.
i mean, hopefully drivers are aware enough that they'd notice the flat before getting on the highway, but rilly? i dunno, i've never been much one for driving :)

i don't think they're going to be going anywhere with four flat tires, no.

Yeah: four flats are so easy to notice after you've gone a couple feet, speaking as someone familiar with automobiles and automobile machinery.

I'm not retarded, I was just envisioning a single flat presenting a) a challenge to handling and b) being a little harder to notice, at first.
well, maybe I am retarded, but you'll have to talk to my mother about that one. we always used the descriptive "a little long in the birth canal, c'mon now hey."

Sounds like good advice. I'll try following it.
Meanwhile, I got another contact:
Director William (Bill) Edwards – Parking Enforcement Director
The nice officer who answered questions at SBAB tonight suggested that SPD Director Edwards would love to get pictures and details of parking violations.
I am also getting quite a few pictures of cars parked in the truck loading zone that the trucks are supposed to use.

It's the cars that follow me up the bike lane there that really worry me.
I've only encountered one delivery truck parked in the bike lane there, much more common are minivans with a kid in the back and no driver to be seen.
I tend to thump them as I go past (not the kid, the back of the van. it makes a very satisfyung sound and doesn't do any damage.).
Scares the heck out of the kiddos, but why would anyone park their car in the middle of on-coming traffic if they didn't want their kids to cry?

Two bonus punchlines accompany this image. The first is in the name of the image. The second I've put in the TOS. Happy hunting.

Maybe i'll set up a webcam watching the lane for you guys that feel bored enough to call the spd EVERY time there's someone parked there.

1) where else are the trucks gonna park? At least you can go around the truck. The lady, who knows.
2) the real problem is that people park in the truck loading zone. It probably does more good to take pictures of people parked in the truck loading zone.
3) I used to bang on people's cars (it's so satisfying to hear that thump!), but now, I just go around and hold up traffic. I'd rather not antagonize someone who is stupid enough to accidentally the whole thing.
Daryl: PLEASE set up a camera. this is an amazing idea. I will personally call multiple times per day.
I'll try to get this up by the end of the week. Gotta find the webcam.

TOS edit warring keeps me occupied during the afternoons at work. I thank you all for choosing to resume participation. I look forward to a webcam to monitor instead.
My left cuffleg is still wet from the ride in, I should have rolled it up.

They're not "webcams," they're corporate pseudo-government surveillance devices. I can also: remotely open your bathroom door.

Back in the day I used to live at 2nd and Bell, beside what used to be Speakeasy Networks and above the Lava Lounge in what was called The Crack Shack or the Slanty Shanty. We put up a webcam off the back of the building pointed at the crack park behind us, and for awhile you could go to http://crackpark.com and watch it go down. It was pretty much exactly like The Wire, sept no Omar.
