Front page news today. Better than previous articles in a 'not presenting the police story as the truth' sort of way.
Notice that Cascade has switched from a neutral or softly positive stance on CM to this:
"Critical Mass isn't doing Seattle any good — it's a rolling party," said Chris Cameron, director of the bicycle-commute program for the 10,000-member Cascade Bicycle Club.
I'd like to add that
"Cascade doesn't isn't doing Seattle any good -- It's a bunch of self-fellating bureaucrats who do nothing but endorse helmet laws and trolley tracks, while allowing the city to pretend they care about cyclists"

Quote:
"The motorist should face charges, absolutely — he was in a 3,000-pound weapon that accelerated and hit somebody," Cameron said.
So CBC is going to use all of their 10,000 member sway to get this guy cited, right, right?

CBC issued the following statement. Given that Cascade is what it is, I think it's a reasonable statement.

CBC has to get their story straight. Bulldog wrote a press release yesterday that isn't anti-Mass.

i think it's funny that they feel the need to put out a press release in the first place. it didnt have anything to do with them in the slightest.

7:30pm Critical Mass storms and occupies The Boxcar
8:00pm Pallet Fire
9:15pm Half of Critical Mass boards the ferry and goes camping. Other half goes to The Buck.

A good story. David Hiller was right on. Was good of the guy to make the public statement. I don't think it was an accident but I believe he regrets what he did.
Shit. Maybe we can get back to the business of riding bikes now.

SLB statement:
On July 25th, a car driver tried to pull out from where he was parked mid-block and pulled into a group of people on bicycles. For the safety of the group, some people tried to stop the car. Frustrated at being late for a dinner reservation, the driver yelled at the cyclists and then drove directly into them, pinning one of them under his car and throwing another on top of the car. He then attempted to flee the scene.
Enraged fellow cyclists then attacked and damaged the motorist’s car. The cyclists who attacked the car are being (rightly, in our opinion) prosecuted. So far, the the driver is not facing even so much as a reckless driving citation.
This is a travesty. It appeared that the driver was trying to kill.
Please consider contacting City Councilmember Tim Burgess mailto:tim.burgess@seattle.gov and City Attorney Thomas Carr mailto:thomas.carr@seattle.gov and urge them to prosecute.

Dare-ick-EAT-o statement:
On July 29th, I will be cooking a couple of freshly caught sockeye salmon at my wonderful home in Fremont. After cooking them to perfection with select spices and sauces I will lovingly adorn them with red beans and rice, and a plain but delicious dinner salad. After gorging myself on the fish I will wash all of it down with a robust red wine of my choosing.
I find this to be a wonderful way to spend the evening. Anything less than this perfect meal on this fine summer evening would be a travesty.
Please consider contacting Derrick Clark if you have any questions or concerns.

The Times published my letter to the editor in their online section. PLEASE WRITE A LETTER! It's one thing to spew on the net, but the old school media needs to hear from us.
Another lame letter in the PI today so I wrote one...
The driver has not been charged. This is not right. The police got there a few minutes after the incident so they never saw anything, they had to rely on witness accounts just like we do. All witness accounts I've seen including that of a bystander state that the car was attacked only after driving into the crowd. Whatever your feelings about Mass are you can't leave road rage unpunished. What is really upsetting is the way the cops lied about what happened. They don't like Mass so they are making up a story to have a reason to clamp down on it. I pay my taxes and expect the police who are charged with keeping order to be honest. I contributed $100 to the tire slashers legal fund not because I agree with slashing tires but because the attorney will conduct an investigation to get at the truth.

It is worse than that. From what I can piece together, the police had a shift change mid-response. The events happened on two sites separated by about 50 yards. The officers interviewing the witnesses at the first site (where the car hit one person, did a 3 point turn, and then drove over another person) left, then the new officer in charge only talked to the officers that remained at the second site (where the car was damaged and the driver was hit) before making his decision about how to write it up.

A wrote a letter of complaint to the SPD.
In return I got this:
Quote:
Dear Mr. Barnea:
We received your correspondence regarding the Critical Mass ride on Capitol Hill Friday, July 25th. Critical Mass has for years been involved in leaderless rides to make a political statement about our country's use of automobiles. Their strategy has been to inconvenience drivers by "clogging" the street with bicycles. This has been a monthly occurrence and typically has taken place without incident.
Unfortunately Friday's event did not end peacefully. There is no excuse for the behavior that took place, which was criminal and excessive. Regardless of who is responsible for provoking the situation, the city will not tolerate citizens taking the law into their own hands. Luckily, uninvolved witnesses called 911 quickly and officers were dispatched to handle the event. These witnesses were able to identify some of the riders involved in the criminal acts and they were arrested.
The City of Seattle strives to ensure that all who wish to demonstrate within the city limits are allowed to exercise that right in a safe and peaceful fashion. Critical Mass has repeatedly declined to work with the police department for their demonstration rides. Despite their resistance, SPD has monitored their monthly events to address any criminal activity and where appropriate have made arrests. This particular incident is being treated as a public safety issue and as the investigation continues, I am confident that those involved in this criminal incident will be held accountable for their behavior.
As Mayor, one of my top priorities is ensuring that Seattle is a safe community where all people can express their beliefs without engaging in criminal or dangerous behavior. The Seattle Police Department will continue to provide public safety services to any group wishing to exercise their 1st Amendment Right in an effort to reduce any potential conflict that might occur. Part of that process has and will continue to include enforcement action when appropriate.
Thank you for taking the time to write and express your concerns about this incident.

If "the city will not tolerate citizens taking the law into their own hands" then surely this means they will guarantee that car road rage incidents against bicycles will be investigated and prosecuted.
Right, Mayor Kerlikowske?

ENFORCEMENT
Support efforts to holistically enforce traffic regulations equitably among all transportation modes and functions.
They meet tomorrow @ 6pm room L280 in City Hall. I'm going to raise the point about how Tom Braun was run over, but Mark hasn't been charged with violating any traffic regulations in the hope that they'll advise the city to do so.
Meanwhile, if you participate in CM next month it may be prudent to bring a video camera.
