My film is getting developed and scanned, what's your excuse? Get those pixels up on flickr with some annotations.

So, what's a decent digital camera (less than $200) that functions well in lowlight? I don't care about the megapixels as I'm not going to be doing 20"x30" posters very often. If it uses rechargeable AA's, that would be mo' better. Used is fine.

In fact, is anyone having the upgrade-shakes and is wanting to get rid of a camera?

I use a bottom-end Nikon Cool-Pix (http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/ProductDetail.page?pid=25596) that works pretty dang well considering it was $130. Their higher price ones only get better, which is not always the case.

For point and shoots I have stayed close to Canon. Night exposures still tend to be tricky, sans flash, for point and shoot digitals. Video clips tend to come out ok. The A-series canons run off AA batteries and tend to be cheaper and are tad bulkier. I'm pretty sure this is what Denny was using before he went off the deep end.

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-A590IS-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B0011ZCDKS/ref=dp_ob_title_ce

The IS in this model should help for lowlight some, you can run a slower shutter speed and the IS is like a steadier hand, it won't make people look less blurry if they move though.

Second the canon A series. I had two, both were fantastic cameras. One spent the night buried in wet sand on a surfing trip, the other in the bottom of a backpack full of snow.

Anyway, great cameras, just keep them dry.

Hmm, the Aseries one Joeball linked is tempting. So is a SX110-IS I found for $197. But lets be honest, I'm no photographer and I don't even play one on TV. I should probably just go for the cheaper more reasonable one.

Especially since I plan on taking it out on rides and that could seriously limit it's lifespan...

Go cheaper

Paul has an old A-series he lent me and is collecting dust at my house. Maybe you should buy it.

I've also had great luck with Canon's
Next time I buy one it'll be this

Elph
= more small and anondized aluminum case makes it durable
Thing takes great videos, and amazing macro images.
Only problem with the one I currently have (older 3.5Mpixel) is that I broke the screen. When it came back 2 months later from the assholes at Glazers the screen was fixed but the flash no longer worked. They were such jerks I haven't gone back in there to have them fix it. If you do break something never go to Glazers unless you:
a)want to be treated like dogshit
b)want your repair to take 2 months
c) still want to pay full price
- apparently they're too hip for the point n shoot crowd.

I believe the 8Mpix Elph has the IS feature
So buy one and protect the screen.

i love my indestructible pentax optio w10, but i have to admit it takes shitty photos in low-light. photonerd and sf-ian jess got it to work once pretty well but i never figured out how to replicate her success.

still, it's been in more pitchers of beer on rides than derrick's nutsack, and that's saying something.

i can truthfully say that my nutsack has never once been in a pitcher of beer.

ive always been happy with canon gear. i used some sony stuff back in the day (mavica and 2 sony f707's) but then moved on im currently running a canon powershot sd1100 for a snapshot camera, and looking to buy a canon xsi dslr camera after christmas for my work studio.

i wish my point and shoot had a good black and white feature, it's lacking that (others have had it).. but i can fake that in photoshop.

i wish point&shoots were a little sturdier. i know there are some waterproof options, but ive had nice cameras crap out because of only a few pieces of sand.

i love the cannon a720is.

I have been very happy with the manual controls for a point and shoot.
The video feature, while not video cam quality, is shockingly good.

I had the pentax optio w20 when i was trying to go waterproof.

Turn's out waterproof doesn't protect it from drunk idiot leaving it at the Blue Moon.

I'm with the Canon crowd, although I use nothing fancy... one of their point and shoot models. Works proportional to my photo-taking ability.

Also, in response to the original post- the new Energizer rechargables work pretty well, even in the digital camera. A set plus the charger sets you back about $20, and if you don't like how they work in your camera, no harm, right?

I'm using a Canon A590 on my trip now, and I love it. I had an earlier model for my trip through Europe last summer, until I broke it. (Note: Ortliebs are a bad place for cameras without a case.) It's small enough to keep in my back pocket while riding, uses AA's, and has full manual controls that you can play with if you want. And it's cheap. Plus you can now fiddle with the firmware with CHDK for some cool features. I still haven't done that myself, but I plan to when I get home. The only problem I've had with either of them is that now my new one can't remember the damn date, so it asks me to set it each time I turn it on. After canceling that screen, it says all my photos are from 1980... Oh well.

You can see what the photos it takes look like on my flickr page.

I just bagged me a Canon G9 for $275 through the customer loyalty program.
All I had to give them was my old SD200 (3.5Mpxl elph) with no flash, busted screen, and missing shutterbutton.

Thanks again Andre!

If you can find a used one of the Fuji F10/F11/F30 series was the king of low light point and shoots. They aren't so great in good daylight, but they are the closest you'll get to digital SLR results in low light.

Sadly Fuji decided to sell megapixels instead of quality and the sensor that those cameras used isn't offered anymore. The higher megapixel sensors aren't as sensitive and give much worse results.

A trick that works for most cameras in low light is to shoot in B&W (or convert to it later). Noise in color photos is a lot more distracting than noise in B&W photos.

Awesome that Canon took your beat to shit camera back for a credit key lime. Somewhere I still have a 10 year old Canon digicam with a broken lens/sensor, I wonder if they'd take that.

They have a list of cameras on the site Andre listed that they'll take
Past that it doesn't hurt to call

Following the comment thread at the bottom of the article it seemed they were steadily jacking up the price until the G9 - at $375 - was no longer that much of a deal.
Then I guess they decided to change their offering (different ELPH and S5-IS instead of Rebel-XT) and drop the prices back down significantly. I got the G9 for a stellar deal. Can't wait to figure out how to use it now.
