t shirts
I recently got access to a silkscreening studio, and I just bought a buncha black ink. I've been dreaming up silkscreening projects, and I started to wonder if anybody ever tried to make some .83 shirts. I'm an absolute beginner, but I also plan on putting some effort into getting good at this quick.
So
You guys
wanna buy some .83 tshirts?
What works for people?:
-Just the logo on the front
-"safety third" on the back too? (this might be hard)
-some other saying?
If I got good, I could maybe even make a three color (red white black like the above logo)
Or white and black on a red tshirt?
Obviously, until I don't suck, I'll stick to simple one color. Black on red or black on grey probably. I can buy other colors.
I've been thinking up other designs too.
If I bought a stack of shirts, might folks might be interested in buying one? I would charge just enough money to cover my expenses - which I won't figure out until I know how many shirts I'll buy
Derrick, email me the logos etc, or somebody post a link to em. thanks
Now is the part where people post pictures of d0nkey dick

oooh, .83 gear planning thread! let's hope this one actually produces results, unlike, say, this one.
Thanks
I'll try not to be a waffly asshat
at least not more than usual
And those logo graphics were exactly what i was thinking of
edit:
just scrolled that old thread
I think the problem was the idea was too ambitious
I will make tshirts if orders are made
I will not sell you a tshirt I made unless it is actually nice
Nobody will be charged for shit until they have a tshirt in hand
Period

we got half off the ground with screen printing. stickydave showed me how to make a screen (i have it here). i tried to do a few prints with it and i was mixing my ink wrong or something... they never came out right.
ryan, if you have a little print screen party let me know the when and where. i have lots of ink, and ill bring lots of materials (punkstyle patches). if someone is there that knows what they are doing we can get it done.

My access is to the Vera Project's silkscreening studio
You have to take a class to use it, and there's set open hours for use for a nominal fee. They've got the nice photoemulsion setup, a big carousel for multi colors, and an oven for setting ink. No need to buy a buncha junk when there's access to the real thing.
Anybody can join. Problem is there's no more classes 'til Dec 20th. So no printing party anytime soon. If you want to get in that class - sign up NOW.
I'd been looking for a creative outlet, and this place grabbed me. Art is most satisfying to me when it's very hands on and produces something useful. If I can sell it to an appreciative consumer, all the better.

Thank you
If things go well I should have a prototype to show you after this Sat
Should I buy one for you right away?
What size are you? I only have black ink right now, what color shirt would you like?
I understand ya'll are a bit loath to jumpin in after the last fiasco, that's why I'm hoping once folks see me with the real thing you'll start getting excited again.
Do folks want patches? That shouldn't be hard.

I've done some screenprinting, although it's been a while. multiple colors and photo emulsion. I'd probably need to relearn a few things, but could potential be of some assistance.

ryan if you want to borrow my screen you're welcome to use it. i also have a transparency of the logo made if you want to borrow that too.
it's a good size, 7 inches by 7 inches or so on a large sized screen.

So glad to hear folks want these
I will reiterate tho
I only have black ink right now
I won't be able to procure new ink until later next week.
Derrick, I will take you up on that transparency, but really it doesn't make sense to carry around a screen when they have plenty there. I can check out a screen almost indefinitely if I'm consistently using it. Can I snap that transparency up either tonight or tomorrow morn? Wanna leave it out for me if you aren't around?
Anybody interested in black on some-other-color shirts, to be made tomorrow.
If so, tell me color and size and I'll pick up American Apparel

well the screen would save you some work, but no worries if you dont want it.
dont let ink be a problem. i have sixteen ounces of white ink here that you can take and use if you make .83 stuff with it. buy some black tshirts and you'll get them all sold im sure.
im putting the transparency, and a large container of white ink for you on my back porch. come get it any time. im working from home so ill be here until 6ish atleast today.

Black on anything other than white is good too. Like gray.

Swoon, bitches.
Had another project which took precedence, so this came later in the session. Derrick's ink was VERY difficult to work with and kept clogging my screen. I even had to trash the screen at the end of the session, so I gotta make a new one next time. Consequently I got exactly 5 t-shirts done. White on black. The ink is very opaque white, and the placement of the icon on the shirt I tried on was exactly in the center of my chest. I sold one to BTM last night, as he had requested a shirt and I saw him. Wreyford got a one-off that was irregular due to ink difficulties which confounded even my instructor.
To sell I have
One large
One medium
One small
all white on black
(that's right I'm selling them all even tho I want one)
since a gaggle of folks posted requests I'll open it back up on these three
first post for each gets it
Next time I'll do black on other colors first (starting with gray) and make a handful of "punk patches" black on white. I have the fabric and the ink. I can sign up again for Wed night.
Place your black-on-(color) order now and tell me what size you'd like and I will do everything I can to make it for you Wed.
Since there is a lot of interest in the white-on-black (including for myself) I will make it a priority to make more asap. However, I definitely won't be able to make them before next Sat.

just add water to the ink to thin it. that will keep the screen from clogging. should be about like yogurt. not thick hippie yogurt, moer like the cheap shit you can get at safeway 10 for a buck.

I specifically asked about this.
Two different experienced people there told me not to dilute it. They said you want it as thick as possible to make it opaque.
As it was, at full strength, it still took average four coats apiece - drying under a little heater between - to make the white opaque. If I thinned the ink more it would make it less opaque, requiring more coats, which would cause the screen to clog up just as much by the time I finish each shirt. Seriously, I figured out how to make this thing work and I'm not messing with the process now.

You can also try using a gel medium. That will thin the ink without diluting the color too much. To use a cooking metaphor, It's like using alcohol to extend the flavor of something by making into an extract

You said they were AA brand shirts? I fit a small of theirs nicely. If the small isn't spoken for, I'd love it! If it has been, I'd love to get in line to have a shirt before I leave the country first of the year so I can spread the .83 "love" to other locales...

I'm not reading the whole damn thread before I reply. I want one. Will pay cash money to you so I don't have to make one. Tell me how much and I will come and fetch shirt or whatever.
Though shrinking, I'm still a large. Probably.
Will go back and read the rest of the thread now.

You know, everyone has great ideas for someone else to do.
Speaking of...I have this great idea.: Buy your own shirt/vest/cape and give it to Ryan and he can give us a cost for his time/materials for the screening. Write your name and the screening color on the tag. Ryan does this work for you? If so look for some shirts from me coming your way.

It's been said better before
Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I'd rather do the tshirt purchasing myself, etc. If I fuck a shirt up, I bought it not you, I take the loss. I'll buy extra shirts and make as many as I can, expecting that other folks will want them.
Folks, drop an order for a preferred size and color.
Review:
black-on-(your color) will be made first - for maximum throughput
white-on-black or whatever (so Lee are you gettin one of each? gonna wear em all at the same time so you look like a gobstopper? also, size) later, but asap
I checked w/ Vera and they're shut down Wed and Sat for the holidays, so next week I guess.
Of those I have already made
Small - Nick
Medium - ? (Derrick asked for one - u wanna claim it first?)
Large - Rainbow Scott (oh that's my favorite Scott name yet)
I'll be out tomorrow, I will bring these shirts. But l have to show up late due to a crappy meeting
Expect a new gal to come to the meetup. Names Jae - you'll recognize her as the tall gal w/ black hair shotgunning Rainier tallboys. Sez she's bringin her bro (some lurker from Oly).

Yeah, but what if I want a .83 logo printed on vintage t-shirts from my favorite second hand fashion store? mis-registered and smeary logos have their own DIY appeal, in my book. The question is will you print on a t-shirt if I bring you one or two?

Ryan gave me the blurry blem shirt in exchange for a hockey ticket, and man love. The ink on this one is kinda silver-ish, the ones that came out nice look really great, good job Ryan.
