Early Thursday morning a friend of ours wrecked while riding his bike, he wasn't wearing a helmet. His name is Matt Michaels, he works at Cafe Metropolitain with Chase. As with any accident the details are sketchy at this point. We know he's suffered serious head trauma and he's fighting for his life at Harbor View. This brings a lot of emotions, and issues to ahead. When Chase was living in San Diego, he lost a friend who was involved in an accident with a car, an accident in which a helmet possibly could've saved Atip's (the victim) life. Living in this city, and seeing the number of cyclists without helmets is alarming. I find it hard to comprehend why anyone would be opposed to helmets. Anyhow, Chase and I, and everyone from Cafe Metropolitain are working to put together something to raise awareness for helmet safety, as well as helping to raise money for Matt and his family. We need help. Cafe Met is willing to donate kegs, and I'm sure I can get my vendors to donate food. Help us out pointy3.

So, Cafe Metropolitian is having a benefit/party for Matt next Friday, the 12th. It's starting at 7pm and going till we close the bar down. It would really mean a lot to me, Matt's family and his friends if we could get a solid turn out. My manager has asked for me to try and get Point 83 out for this party. She knows us and knows we ride bikes, drink booze and like to celebrate. Matt's an amazing kid and he needs our help. Let's do this.
Please wear a helmet and ride safe-ish kids.

I'll stop by for a drink, but that's also the Calendar Release party in Ballard that night so you'll be competing against another widely known and heavily attended bicycle event.
You should make it the day before, on Thursday. We can ride to hell and gone and end up at the Cafe Met around 11pm or whenever.

Sucks he crashed. Is there a way to throw him a few bucks online? (paypal or something?)
The helmet discussion is always a passionate one. I know i've wrecked a couple helmets and i'm pretty glad it was the helmet taking the hit and not my skull.
Also curious to know if it was at all due to not having enough light. I'm not going to comment on the helmet thing, but I will say I'm amazed at how many people don't have bright lights.. everyone's got blinkers but as we all know, those don't do much for letting you see the road ahead of you.
Sure, lights are expensive, but... huge medical bills are expensive too.
I once read somewhere that studies show that every dollar you spend on bike parts/supplies/etc leads, in the long run, to three dollars saved in long-term health care costs. And while most of that is probably to heart disease and other lack-of-exercise-related stuff ... In this case, it'd also apply to short-term medical (and/or dental!) fees due to falling on yer face. Actually I'm curious to know if any of you have heard about this.. I read it on some forum or blog once but the person didn't cite any sources.

Cаmpаgnolo and carbon fiber, it's a long term savings plan.

I've spent plenty of money on bikes, where is my savings!?!/
It is also a fact that 93.452% of all statistics are made up on the spot.
The choice to wear helmets, illuminate your bike, keep your brakes working well etc. are all personal choices. Like most people in this outfit, I fall somewhere between Lee's bike ninjitude and Joby's attempts at being seen from space. I tend to think that the three things a bike can never have enough of are illumination, braking power, and traction. But I use cheapo LED blinkies, ride with cantilevers that are pretty well set up but not absolutely optimized, and I ride on 32s more of the time. I could take more precautions, but I am pretty satisfied with the precautions I take.
The dude crashed. It is possible that better lights would have helped. It is also possible that a helmet would have helped too. It is also entirely possible that neither would have prevented this. We should all take the steps we deem appropriate to minimize our risk, but ultimately doing anything still carries some risk. I was there when our own neon-man was hit by a van.

Sure it's a choice. But nobody's denying the safety benefits of helmets anymore than people are denying the safety benefits of seat belts. Yes in many instances seat belts don't help at all, but in a large majority of cases they seem to.
In this case, dude got an accident that could have been probably been mitigated if he'd worn a helmet. It's not rocket science to deduce this looking at him I'd assume. It's only up for debate here on the innerweb because we can't see him. These guys are raising money for the dudes family, and raising helmet awareness. There are worse causes to drink for.
Don't really see the difference between this and wanting to raise seatbelt awareness after your brother/sister/girlfriend/boyfriend/mother/father/son/daughter goes through the windshield for lack of a seat belt.
I don't know why we're talking about fucking lights.

When I was a teenager I flipped my dad's mustang in a truly bizarre accident.
If I had been wearing a seatbelt, I would have died by being held in my seat while the ceiling collapsed, breaking my neck. As I was just leaving a parking lot, I had not yet put on my seatbelt, and after bouncing around I found myself on my hands and knees on the inside of the (collapsed) ceiling.
That being said, I do always wear my seatbelt.
Continue with your horsecockery.

I plan on stopping in for a drink. If there is a way to donate, I will probably throw some bucks his way too.
No one is saying that raising helmet awareness is a bad thing. I doubt if this guy was afflicted with a lack of awareness for the existence and possible benefit of helmets though.
I am just bothered when it is assumed that all wrecks can be avoided and all risk can be eliminated. The idea is to manage risk, not to eliminate it. I also am in favor of individuals managing their risk, rather than the government managing it for us. This is just my view. I do not need a helmet law to always wear my helmet, but maybe I am more frightened by head trauma than most.
I brought up lights cuz I happen to feel they're more important than helmets. One of them protects you in an accident, and one of them lessens the chance of the accident even happening in the first place. Feel free to have a different opinion, if you like.

If I ever wind up in the hospital from a bike accident, my only request is that nobody will argue about safety equipment on the internet as a result. Thanks.
Sorry about your friend; totally sucks. Be careful out there kids!

Wait, I have to choose one or the other?
Anyways, as my old schoolmarm, Sister Bridget would've said, "but for the grace of God, so go I".
Whether I wear a $250 Tour de France proven racing helmet or a French helmet, there are plenty of crashes out there where it won't matter.
Dude's had a tough break. I hope he pulls through, and if some beer money might ease some suffering, that's what matters most here.

Here's an update: This is still going on tomorrow, despite the competition with the calender party. The Cafe metropolitain people didn't want to move the date. There will be two bands, a dj, drink specials, and all sorts of fun. If you're going to the calendar party swing by for a drink, or prefunk at the Cafe Met. Olive and Boylston, hope to see some of you there.

Hey guys. Thanks to everyone that showed up last weekend. Sorry it takes me so long to get to the interwebs, I lack a computer that works, anyway... We raised over $1,300 dollars for Matt and his family this weekend. So, once again. Thanks for everyone showing their support, and for buying all those damn J-E-L-L-0 shots from me. All of that, the PBR and the Three Olives Vodka went straight to Matt. So, Shout out to those companies for helping out. He's doing a lot better and hopefully we'll see him on a bike again some day. Ride safe children.
