I'm actually not against licensing for cyclists on public rights-of-way. I think that it should be a lot easier than getting a driver license, since bicycles are much less dangerous to bystanders imho, but they do still pose a danger to pedestrians and other cyclists. To my mind, it would be enough to make it an automatic addition to a driver license, for licensed drivers, and available by passing the learner's permit test or something similar for unlicensed drivers.

A $25/year registration fee is dumb, though. I don't think that's enforceable.

I also think that people should have to be able to prove seat time in a 26,000lb GVW vehicle to get a driver's license. I don't think drivers have any idea how stupid they're being around trucks.

Not that I wouldn't miss being below the law when I'm riding my bike.

Hey Now... be nice to young Andreww(sic.)...

Andrew... here's the line for registation Andrew, hurry and get in it or you might be behind the push for new cyclist registrations!

In fact, they even put you on a train and take you to the bicycle registration happy factory after you get there! The HAPPY FACTORY is *better* even than candy mountain! It's all warm inside, you can tell by the heat coming out of the smokestacks! It's so warm that when people go in, they never want to leave!

Get in line Andrew! it's BETTER than Candy Mountain!

This may be the dumbest piece of shit idea for 2008 - and it has been a particularly productive year. Men and and the desire to govern.
I propose a mandatory license to carry a phallus in public.

$2 hours of daily community service or you're not allowed to be seen or heard in public.
Can't be substituted by money or other goods.
Or alternatively you can have it cut off permanently and receive a life time subscription.

If only it was a new idea. Here's the same dumb piece of shit idea from 12/2007.

At least the comments seem very pro-bike and many of them actually contain numbers.

No, Ken Schram does not rock. Ken Schram is a professional troll. For that he gets some respect, but he does not, in fact, rock.

Re: bike license. No, it's a stupid fucking idea. It's always been a stupid fucking idea propagated by stupid fucking people who equate being on a road with being a goddamn moron who needs a test to make sure that you don't crash into things. Car licenses are there to make sure that the pilot of that death machine knows how not to murder everyone in their path, and we hope they use it. A cyclist figures out real quick how not to run into shit because that fucking hurts: Not so in a car. Again, for all the license trolls and vehicular cyclists: Motor vehicle != Bicycle, no matter how hard you try.

I can see goods and bads in the idea. I'd pay it just to shut motorists up. Look, here's my fucking card, I too pay for the roads. Now fuck off. And politically it'd give cyclists more clout. That being said, I don't think the license should be mandatory.

The problem is that the people you want to shut up don't research or think before they talk now. That won't change in the future. $25 isn't much money and the next time some number comes about about how it's going to cost $50,000 for some bicycle related improvement, those same idiots are going to be complaining about how they subsidize bicycles. Although subsidize is probably too big of a word.

I spent some time yesterday searching the internet and there's no shortage of valid and informed arguments against this kinds of lunacy. Granted that not all grumpy old men have figured out how to use the internet and tend to stand on their porch yelling "I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for you meddling kids and your internet!"

Most posts tend to cite a single source, Whose Roads from VTPI. That paper sites a number of sources though.

As long as it's strapped to the top of your car, go for it.

Mine were too, then i started getting two tickets a day.

Fucking parking police on my block are insane. I'm going to start camping out and taking pictures of them, just go give back some of the emotional strife they provide.

The good news is i can always find parking in front of my building ... sometimes i have to wait a minute while the tow truck clears a spot.

Every year I get one of these notifications that it's time to renew my tabs. In Maine you could only get a warning within the first month of expiration. I wish Washington either did that or would automatically update the address on my registration when I updated the address on my drivers license.

Agreed, some people make it their profession - some more than others - to go around spouting opinions. Ken Schram does it, Rush Limbaugh does it too, anybody remember the BJ Shea experience? They're all assholes. Just because somebody bears the correct opinion doesn't mean I want their method of expressing it on my side.

Maybe his whole function is talking tough the way that meatheads understand so that maybe the liberal viewpoint is explained to them in a way they can comprehend. Regardless, we all know what happens when you wrestle with pigs.

Yeah, some people figured out how to get paid to do it, the rest of us just do it for free on message boards.

I like Ken Schram, he's like my grumpy ass uncle. I think David Hiller should get Cascade to buy him a bike.

Just caught the followup article from David Hiller of the CBC in the Seattle Times editorial section.

My favorite argument for licensing cyclists is because dogs and cats are required to be licensed so shouldn't cyclists be required to be licensed too! NO dumbass your dog or cat are required to be licensed because they are a threat to public safety if they contract rabbis or distempter. That is why you have to prove that poopsy and fluffy have had their shots to get a license for them, dumbass! But I thot it is was because if my puppy or pussy got drunk and got lost and couldn't find their way home and got picked up for drunk and disorderly, indecent exposure, prostitution, vandalism, littering, vagrancy, or creating a nuisance they would call me to let me know that they are in the pound waiting for me to bail them out. NO again dumbass.

God I hate the Ducks! Go Beavers!
