So I've been having way too much fun riding around in the snow on my mountain bike and I think I want to do more of that tomorrow. On singletrack. Is anyone interested? Can carry +1 person with bike, although I would also be into mooching off someone else with a better car.
Given the high wind warnings, I'm inclined to go for someplace well treed. I'm not sure if there's anywhere in the area that that doesn't describe, though.

Did you make it out this weekend? where'd ya go?
I had a good time just riding my mountain bike around the neighborhood, though I am staying away from the icy parts. the powdery stuff is great though!
Sort of... I decided to go skiing instead. There was a fair amount of powder on Snoqualmie Central.
I just got home from working downtown... It's pretty gnarly out there. The intersections all have really chopped up snow, so it's like riding deep sand or gravel except slicker.

I tried riding the trail for a while, but then quickly realized the road would be *much* easier. Chopped up in places, but much of it was hard-packed smooth. Fairly slick, but as long as you didn't try to turn or stop too fast it was fine. Actually it was more than fine, it was super totally kickass fun. :)
Riding in the snow is definitely super-kickass fun.
I have plans to session the hill at Gasworks Park tomorrow morning. While primarily oriented toward skis/ski boards/sledding, I'm planning to ride over on my mountain bike and bring a snow shovel. The possibility of doing kickers on snow on my mountain bike is too potentially awesome to pass up.
I went for a ride on the Clear Creek Trail not far from where I live. It's normally the fastest way for me to get to work with 2.5 miles of unpaved sections, and another 1.5 miles of paved, multi-use path that bypasses the Route 3 freeway near the base.
(By the way, in the fall, it's a great place to take a ride or a hike, especially with the salmon running and the Olympics in full view. The Post-Intelligencer even voted it "best hidden hiking trail". Most of the locals don't even know it exists.)
But today it was an all out mess. We got 5 inches of snow, and what's normally rideable on a 700c commuter bike was unrideable even on the mountain bike. Within a half a mile, the bike was completely clogged, and I was doing more foot dabbing than pedalling down the hill.

alex and i went riding through ravenna/cowen, a pair of rohloffed mountain bikes in the snow seems like it has to be a rare sight. climbing in snow deep enough that the pedal is hitting it on the downstroke is hard-ass work.

If you inflate your rear tire a bit your bottom bracket will be an inch higher!

St. Edwards is great riding right now. The trails are pretty well packed down so you're trying to ride through foot-deep snow.

Tolt McDonald is rideable
shaded from wind
and probably semi illegal as the gates were closed

Which gates? The only gates I've ever seen up there are *always* closed.
From what I understand, Tolt only closes during periods of high fire danger in late summer.

The parking lot closest to the suspension foot bridge and picnic area was not accessible this time. A swing gate prevented parking there and so the only option was to park on the road shoulder after turning off #203.
