On January 6th at approximately 1:49 p.m. officers responded to the intersection of 21 Avenue South and South College Street for a hit and run vehicle verses bicyclist collision. Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect vehicle was heading northbound on 21 Avenue South approaching a vehicle stopped at a stop sign. The suspect drove into the opposing traffic lane (passing the stopped vehicle on the left), ran the stop sign and collided into the victim, who was riding his bicycle eastbound on South College Street. The force of the impact sent the victim into the air and he landed on the street. The suspect vehicle, described as possibly a navy blue 1980’s Oldsmobile Cutlass or Chevy with a white top, fled the scene traveling northbound on 21 Avenue South. It is probable that the suspect vehicle has front-end damage. SFD Medics responded to the scene and transported the victim to Harborview with life-threatening injuries. The victim is a 20-year-old man from Seattle. Anyone with information about this incident or the suspect and/or vehicle is asked to call 911 immediately.
I just got hit by a car on the way to work this morning. Car backing out of a driveway, didn’t see me and hit me. I flew off my bike and I am laying on the ground, behind another car, who starts up her engine and starts to roll backward. I’m laying there helpless watching the wheels roll closer to me. Bystanders start screaming and running and the car stops. I swear, it’s like they were tag teaming me. Luckily, I was able to walk away, they sent the ambulance away and I was only ½ late to work. All of this happened directly in front of an elementary school. It soooo could have been a lot worse, or a little kid. Parents…not always the best drivers. I hope my knee is okay.

Sounds terrible. Hope you're okay.
In my experience, only biking makes the pain go away.
Wow I am glad you were able to walk away. It sounds hella scary.

and then one of the women says, I'm a naturopath, let me take you back to my house and examine you. At this point I'm totally pissed and thinking to my self, you've already made me late for work, I don't have time for you to play doctor on me.

What exactly is a naturopath?
Anyways, glad to hear you're okay. Keep riding if you can, but if the pain doesn't get less intense, something is wrong, and see a doctor.
Oh, and make sure the fake doctor pays for the real doctor.

Crazy shit. glad you're more or less OK, Suzanne. good luck with that knee.
and doctor-play jokes aside, that's hilarious that she offered to examine you; cuz I don't think naturopaths are actually even trained in evaluating fractures/sprains/etc are they?

No, they are trained at extreme dilutions of chemicals, and placebo effects.
Parents…not always the best drivers. I hope my knee is okay.
I deal with this a lot since I live near a school. Here in Kitsap, they do run bus service, but most of the buses I see delivering kids to school have three or four children on board. Instead, most of the parents drive their cars, create a huge traffic jam, pick up the kid, then get aggressive with the rest of the drivers to get away from school and onwards to the next destination.
I'm normally not scared in traffic. But early in the morning, and in the late afternoon, I fear for my life riding home because of an army of minivans, Subarus and Suburbans.
Now, I know that Scott would argue that buses aren't any better in the driver department, but at least there's fewer of them, and they're on an orderly schedule- so the (traffic jam)+(aggressive^late driver) equation doesn't come into play.
The school I went to in NY actually didn't allow parents to come pick up their kids. If you lived less than five miles, you could walk or ride a bike (or cross country ski or snowshoe- yes we did get enough snow to do this 3-5 months a year). Otherwise, bus rides were mandatory. Why don't they do that here, in what's supposed to be one of the most environmentally friendly states?

I guess I haven't been taking my don't get backed over by a car pill. That must be it.
My knee hurts, like on the inside, and feels all wobbly. I'm pretty sure that I'll live, hoping I won’t have to call one of the orthopedic surgeons that Henry has on speed dial.

because it hasn't been a problem here until recently? don't worry, this credit storm should take care of the excess car cash reasonably quickly.

The person who really saved the day was a parent who just happened to be standing there, saw what was going on, stopped the driver that was about to roll over me. Helped me stand up, called 911, checked my bike for me, told 911 we were ok. And also didn't freak out, kept her cool. She was awesome, who ever she was.
All while the naturopath was trying to "check my pupils"

I have to agree with Matthew. The worst part of my commute is past the Catholic School (no bus service). I ride far away from the school because of the over stressed parent types in mini vans just about killing me on a number of occasions.

that was to check that you weren't in shock or suffering from concussive effects. Naturpaths still have to pass basic 1st aid.

well. okay, maybe she was well intentioned. I was still blazing mad at her for being so oblivious to a person laying on the ground behind her car.

Gosh I hope you got the number of the lady that hit you.
Gosh I hope that the police took somekinda report.
Gosh I hope you have the number of the lady who helped you so you have a witness when the lady who hit you tries to deny it when you do eventually make a police report if you haven't yet.
See a doctor. Do it now.
Contact her insurance. If they flip you shit then file said police report.
When said lady's insurance admits they have to pay your doctor bills, I had a lotta luck with these guys

Mike and Mari are the bomb. They've tripled in size since I went there two years ago and other friends I've sent there also rave. Located at Greenwood just north of 85th, they're easy to get to by bus if you can't bike.
Best luck, Suzanne.
Get better so we can see you around some more.

Ah, thanks. I honestly think I'm going to be ok, though. Or I would have taken a ride in the ambulance. If only I wasn't so resilient! Then maybe I could have asked for a nice little cash settlement to fund my next vacation.

Follow up from this: I've been avoiding the school ever since this incident, but due to traffic one day, ended up going my old route. I saw the lady that backed into me, and she seemed genuinely glad that I was ok and back on my bike. So there was a little closure, you know?
But I noticed that she was still parking in the exact same spot that is totally blind to traffic coming down the hill. I shrugged my shoulders. I think I'll still be avoiding that route, for various reasons.

Seriously, I've got to go with Ryan on this one.
Get names, police documentation, and see a Doctor. You might wake up tomorrow in rough, rough shape, or discover a hairline crack in your frame.
Also, for all y'all with jobs, here's how this should work:
YOU: Yeah, I'm gonna be a little late. I just got hit by a car.
EMPLOYER: Oh no! I hope you're okay. Go see a doctor.
Any word on the kid from the story?

I got hit 1/6 too at 25th and the Burke Gilman. Guy ran a red to take a right and was in the cross walk.
FILE A POLICE REPORT. If you don't need an ambulance, fine, but it's been a month+ of total PITA with Esurance. I have to pay out of pocket for and MRI, Dr. Visits, and now wrist therapy. Oh - and my PIP coverage doesn't work because I was on a bike and not in my car. My health care won't cover it because it's an at-fault claim so Esurance needs to. Yada Yada. I'm lucky I can afford a couple k out of pocket, but if you can't kids - get a lawyer. I'm almost going to close my claim and get re-imbursed, but damn it's a pain.
