January 24-25. Ride to Bellingham, spend the night, train home Sunday morning. Chuckanut drive is open again, so it won't be such a long ride this time.
Anybody who still hasn't done a century, now is your time.
Brandon, you in?
Can somebody please tell my why Amtrak doesn't have bike spots on any of their evening trains? God I hope Obama makes Amtrak not suck anymore.

Ugh, That is the beginning of BoatShowHellWeek. I wont make it.
If you kids need a place to crash, I can see if my parents are up for it again... But I won't be there to make you breakfast at 6:30 in the morning.

i'm engaged in some excessive karaoke celebration the night before which will probably keep me from consciousness until well after daybreak. i even have a saddle that doesn't make my dick fall asleep now, too!
wasn't the boundary bay ride in feb last year? (this is my passive way of asking if you'd be down with riding up another weekend. i know you do this all the time, but i'm too much of a nancy to ride up on my own.)

I have a sailing race that weekend, but I'd be down for another ride sometime in the next coming month.

They have severalexcuses. On the train the conductors blame the addition of a new track for the Olympics. On the 4th they weren't even running the Superliners up to BC, I think they used an Amfleet instead. Maybe they pulled more of the Cascadia/Talgo trains?

Well so far it's just you and me, and the wind is coming 10-15 out of the North. Fuck it, I'm going sailing.

I'm looking for an excuse to come back up there to run into all the random hippies that want me to do things. If I could do any two backpacking trips this year, its Bogachiel in the Olympics, and with the Western Canada Wilderness Committee.

Oh. Shit. Did this happen? Because I was just starting to plan it for the second or third weekend of February.
If it didn't: how does the 14th, or 21st sound?

As a dude once said, we reject as false the choice between our rad bike rides and our greeting card holidays.

As difficult as it may be to believe at this gloomy juncture, sunset on Feb 14 is at 5:30pm. Prepare for the luxury of 10 hours of daylight.

I think I'm going to be up in the islands that weekend. Depending on how many people show, I might be able to arrange for you to come out to my cabin... If that sounds interesting let me know.

Valentine's Day Century -- bros before hos.
I saw we find a table of two or three cute girls at Boundary Bay and bring them flowers. "I rode all this way just to bring you these..." Yeah, we'll totally get laid.
Count me in!

I'm a big fan of lady-"bros" and I mean that in the lady-friends way, not in the pink Scott "let's go cruise for trannies" way.

No no no
I'll show you man-delight by the candlelight,
that's what I meant to say, sheesh.

This sounds like a bad idea. Even though I have the weekend off to do it.

Bad idea = probably shouldn't do because the negative results would outweigh the positive results
That's how things work.
You are thinking:
SUPER FUN IDEA WITH POSSIBLY NEGATIVE REPERCUSSIONS = MUST DO
Matthew, time to go cruising for non-threatening girls and contemplate talking to them.

You're thinking like that bum I always beat at chess that tries to hustle me for drug money in Central Park, but ends up losing 'cos you're only thinking a couple of moves ahead.
You think I'm thinking "ooh, that's scary 'cos she might reject me" which is only the opening move. Then, you've figured she'll say yes, and surprise, I have a girl and we had fun doing it. That's only thinking like two or three moves ahead.
I'm thinking somewhere around eight or nine moves ahead, past where we fall in love, I travel to Bellingham every weekend, go broke doing it, rack up credit card debt, the collections agency comes after me, I get evicted, then prostitute myself to a rough ex-convict to pay my debts.
I'm calculating the best endgame for avoiding the ballgag right now. Now that's scary.

Since this isn't chess, you don't have to be constantly paranoid, which is one of the reasons I don't like chess very much. I much prefer games with a little chance due to the multiple outcomes possible, and somehow, I think that girls happen to be one of those.

Matthew, you haven't watched enough '80s teen sex comedies. You're clearly the shy, geeky guy who no one thinks will get the girl, then, when everyone else is off getting arrested/buying booze/trying to get into the frat party, he meets a divorcee ('80s speak)/cougar (21st century speak), who takes him home and teaches him the ways of the world.
The next day you meet your friends, they make some clueless remarks about how you disappeared the previous night, you wink at the camera, roll credits.

I'm pretty sure that was American Pie. Also, that was a 90's teen sex comedy, wasn't it?

As Jung teaches us, the classic myths are recapitulated in each generation.
Or was that George Lucas?

True. I thought of the movie Summer of '42, from 1971 (dork gets the grieving young war widow - Jennifer O'Neill! - while other guys are just putting their dicks in movie popcorn boxes).
Sorry to push in here, hope it kinda keeps the Valentine Love Ride theme moving - there was crying and tenderness in that movie too.
Okay, this is awkward now.

Well maybe some of us are emotionally reckless masochists with disposable income.
Look, I am filled with all sorts of hubris and impulsive notions and I have avoided "the ballgag" so I'm pretty sure you could as well.
And I meant girls in Seattle.
Do you want to be Maverick or Iceman?

I bought myself my first "grownup" road bike as a valentines present to myself, instead of getting the girl I was seeing anything. That was the end of that, although I think I came out the winner in the long run.
Actually, I always thought of myself as the Admiral Benson type.

You sound like a person that should not leave the house. ever.
Oh what the heck, I'm in- provided my flight from DC gets in at a reasonable time Friday seeing as I'll have to do the 0520 ferry over to Seattle to catch the meetup.
I'm so going to regret this- even if the hundred miles in cold spring weather's going to be awesome.
