Our 4th year of the Fucking Hills Race (FHR!) is on us soon. February 22nd (Sunday) meet up 8:30 am under the viaduct at the usual place of Washington and Alaskan. We have a half hour for sign ups and yelling at each other in the street, then we catch the 9:35 ferry to Bainbridge.
The race is 7 dollars. Prizes will again be cash and a huge pile of bike schwag from our gracious sponsors. All you can eat chili feed at the finish line (veg and meaty) included. Bring an extra 8 dollars to cover the cost of the ferry, return trip is free.
This is a GREAT day event. 33 miles of hills and cold. Bainbridge is beautiful, and it's a great challenging ride. Plus, every year so far EVERYONE attending has gotten prizes, regardless of finishing placement.
Prize list so far in my hands::
Custom messenger bag from Allison (applesauche on the forums)
Petzl headlamp
I cum chocolate spoke card tshirt
4 park tools bottle opener wrenches
2 park tools t shirts (lg, xl)
More details and sponsor info will be dropped here as it comes in.
If you know of anyone that wants to help out and donate anything (service, item, etc) put them in touch with me. Anything related to cycling or outdoors or strippers or booze makes great prizes. Use your imagination. Talk to anyone you know that might be a position to help out. I can make great gift certificates if you have a service that you'd like to donate as a prize (last years examples)
You can help out by:
1. Gathering prizes
2. Working the finish line (set up tent, chili, keep track of who comes in, ill have this set up and EASY for you to do. prizes and food will be delivered via a truck, just need to unload and set up.))
3. Night before the race pick up tons of bread from the ever giving bakeries
4. Pirate flag purchasing
5. Copy the picture and spread the word on myspace, messages boards, bicycle community sites, etc.
Get a hold of me with any questions about any of that.
5. Copy the picture and spread the word on myspace, messages boards, bicycle community sites, etc.
I'm cross posting this to cascade.org right now! They've got like 40,000 members who like bicycling.
In all seriousness though, heads up- the ferry trip is actually $7.70 ($6.70 + $1 per bike surcharge), so bring $8 not $7.

I'm already making chili for this. As in perfecting the recipe, not stockpiling chili. My fridge has a large mixing bowl of it left after both jenn and I eating chili twice a day everyday since Friday.
Ring up if you want a sample of what's to come.

I'm going to go by Tall Grass in Ballard and see if they're willing to donate any dumpster bread. If not, I'll see if I can just get it out of their dumpster.

Last year I went legit - paid and rode with Cascade. What a waste. First of all, once you are in that mass of bikes in the ferry line, NO ONE is checking to see if you paid for a ferry ticket. Second... You still gotta PAY for the goddam chili after the ride.
I think Cascade does good things with the money, so that's cool... but at least gimme some friggin chili after the ride. If I'm riding this year, I'm crashing - and I don't mean falling off my bike.

I've got a bib number for Chilly Hilly. Why? Because a good chunk of the ride fees go to the Bainbridge Island community, which is where I live. I like living in a really nice neighbourhood. So while I'd rather ride with you guys, I can't straight up pirate this ride.
But I'm certainly not going to say "on your left!" everytime I pass someone. In fact, I'll probably give them the "you're pathetic, this isn't even a hill" look. And I'm not going to wear fluorescent rain jackets either. Not even going to wear the helmet stickers so they can take my picture.
There's a debate going at the cascade forums about what makes a good rider. Their consensus is "someone who rides slowly to stay in control and promotes safety for themselves and other riders". I say a good rider can ride fast and stay in control. Not my problem if you can't ride in a paceline, open food while rolling or have someone sit in on your wheel without crashing. If you can't handle my speed, that doesn't make me a bad rider- it makes YOU a bad rider.

BLAH BLAH BLAH rationalization and justification for what does not need either blah blah blah
I say a good rider can ride fast and stay in control. .
2 things: There are a significant minority of FHR riders who buy Cascade bibs too. Most of us are assholes, but at least we buy beer from the store.
Also, there was a post from one of the armband-wearing "ride refs" after the FHR pointing out that the "pirates" he saw rode in control, rode polite, and rode well. So, I hope I can keep that tradition for a second year!

I have one request:
Please don't sneak onto the ferry line without paying either Cascade or WSF. For every body that enters the Cascade entrance, even if they don't notice that you aren't wearing a bib, Cascade is footing the bill for the ferry fee so you are stealing $7 (or whatever they pay per person for the ferry) from a bicycle education and advocacy organization.
Beyond that, do whatever you want. It is a public road.
I'll be flying both colors again this year.

See above. we also get to go on first since we paid instead of using the corral.

of course, if you sneak into that group without going through the cascade entrance (as some have done in years past) then the only people you're "stealing from" is the washington state ferries. but don't get in trouble with them, because the law of the sea is a harsh one indeed.

Indeed. It's nine lashes with a cat o' nine tails if you're caught stealing. Of course, you get even worse (twelve lashes) if you're caught drunk in public.
Change of subject:
Derrick, if I get prizes, how are you collecting them?

anyway i can.
im having corporate sponsors send everything to my office.
for all you people, i can pick up, or you can drop off to me on a ride... or just bring anything that you have collected down on race day and we can drop them all in the trailer (so you dont have to race with it). just let me know what's coming so that i can update the prize list

Taking indecent liberties with boy in hammock = 12 lashes with cats

sorry about that ro, (2007). we should have enough chili so that wont happen to anyone ever again.
help at the finish line would be super appreciated.
for anyone that helps with the finish line. ill have everything set. you just have to take the trailer to the end point, and then call my mother and she'll drive down all the food, tents, headers, and prizes. then just set up the tents, heat, and drink while you wait. :)

So for those of us who don't want to carry a messenger bag...
"Oh, it's too heavy."
"Oh, having weight on one shoulder makes my body wonky"
"Oh, I'm not beating the Cascade riders by a significant enough margin"
"I refuse to put a rack on a racing bike"
"Etc. etc."
Is anyone driving a support vehicle to the finish area? Or should I just leave it at home and spend all day embarassing you guys with my tights?

the support vehicle is a bike trailer. but consider carefully what you're wiling to leave protected only by a .83er.

we'll have one, maybe two trailers that you can dropstuff at the start line and have waiting for you at the end. id suggest bringing some warm clothes for the finish.
I will have my car parked just off the ferry on Winslow Way. It's slightly larger than a bike trailer, and has a roof rack for two bikes. (Four if someone speaks up early so I can install them).
I'm offering it for use for hauling messenger bags and 40 gal drums of chili. Also, it's already on the correct side of the Sound- avoiding a $26 ferry round trip.

I'm expecting to double the chili volume from last year. I may even make a batch of Special Reserve for only the hardiest of taste buds. Seeing as half the comments I got last year were "This is the best chili I have ever had" and the other half was "Sweet Jesus, this chili is the hottest I have ever had!"
The Special Reserve would be to push the members of the first group into the second group, or myself. I like the chili HOT.

C'mon! The last couple of years it's been at least two .83'ers and two pre-teens. Can't get more secure than that.
Yeah how much trouble could they get into?

can i drive it around the course? i'm certain that i would get less bitching from cascaders for doing that rather than riding.

Dear Ben,
Sorry I can't make it...
Derrick,
You should hit up Planet Bike. I just broke a light; they were very responsive and are shipping me a new piece sans gratis. I am sure they would love what .83 does for the cycling community.

i just added clever cycles sending arm warmers and hats and leg warmers, and petzl sending some light gear.
