Given the flack a few loud voices from Cascade Bicycle Club, Black Scott had a good idea that I think we should organize into a group effort for those of us who can afford to do so. After we have all paid to ride the Fucking Hills Race, have our pirate flag, and a few drinks in us, those of us who are able should all walk over to the Chilly Hilly registration table, and donate $30 ($3 more than the actual Chilly Hilly fee) to Cascade Bicycle Club.

I'm not a member of Cascade, but I support what they do; get people to ride bikes and advocate for cyclist rights. Let's see if we can quash their whole argument by donating to the cause we are being accused of stealing from.

Extra thanks to paid Chilly Hilly and Fucking hills Race riders who will walk with us.

This will take alot of wind out of the CBC bitching sails. As I reported to Ben via the SLOG comments, I don't know if I will be able to make it, but if I can't I will give someone $$ on Thursday to donate to advocacy on my behalf.

Not only did I buy a registration for the Chilly Hilly, but I gave them an extra $10.

Recompensing makes baby Jesus pet his magic puppies.

I'm not giving them $6 for their frigging chili though.

Well as stated, I'm not buying that fucking bib - I'm not riding their ride and I'm not going to support it given their attitude about emergency services. I will donate for the advocacy though.

Now don't fall over eachother to placate the whining ninnies who hate the FHR by giving CBC any money you woudn't otherwise.

I'd encourage any FHR racers to make any donations post-race, so as to show that we support and appreciate their work but not donating for a bib and unused services because we don't like being called names. It's okay to be an asshole, welcome to America.

Since I am giving them close to $200 bucks this year in membership fees and ride entry fees, I don't feel too bad about riding the FHR instead.

That being said, anyone ever read their "Strategic Plan Executive Summary"? http://www.cascade.org/About/index.cfm
Interesting stuff. Here's some of my fav bits...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
D. External Threats
1) Public’s perception of the club as older, white, exclusively road oriented
2) Cycling not seen as cool by younger generations
3) Specialty bike clubs (tandem, recumbent, mountain biking)
4) Poor riding on events
5) More events competing for people’s free time and recreation dollars
6) The silent PR approach to advocacy efforts.
And..
C. Strategic Goals
The strategic goal of Cascade Bicycle Club is to become the go-to bicycle advocacy and education and safety organization in the central Puget Sound region and the premiere cycling sports production “company” in the Pacific Northwest
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Not saying they are awful people... but they are trying to be the "premiere cycling sports production company" and they view specialty clubs that don't think they are cool as a "threat" to this goal. Just sayin.

I find this idea lame both because it isn't needed and because it won't work.

I'm looking to be above the situation the loud members of Cascade Bicycle Club are trying to manufacture. If you are into it, great. If not, keep your money. I have been meaning to donate some money to them anyway, and this is great timing to do so. It certianly does not make me any less of an asshole though.

Donating money to Cascade's Advocacy Dept = donating money to better bicycling in our communities.

Here are some of the things that Cascade's Advocacy Dept. has put together for area cyclists:

-Coordinating & writing a report on the WSDOT-sponsored 2008 (first year!) annual Washington Bicycle & Pedestrian Count Project (16 cities, over 150 volunteers). The info from the study was provided to each participating municipality so that they could decide where weak points were/where improvements could be made in the future. This was the first year, so it was bumpy, but I'm looking forwards to the 2009 effort.

-Canvassing on key initiatives during the 2008 general elections, including the Parks Levy, Transit Now, etc. Canvassing and endorsements including financial donations for key candidates in the Puget Sound region.

-Paying out the big $$ for an independent traffic study that, combined with the public ire raised by local advocacy upstarts SeattleLikesBikes, made it impossible for the city of Seattle to pave over the facts. We now have bike lanes/sharrows on Stone Way N, allowing for newer riders to feel safer and more comfortable on the road, and creating traffic calming measures that ensure greater pedestrian safety.

-The city-sponsored "BikeSmart" campaign, encouraging former weekend cyclists or fair weather cyclists to take advantage of their education programs and learn how to commute on a regular basis and have the skills/equipment to keep them safe.

-Free/low-cost helmets for children and adults.

-Campaigning to make the "Give 3 Feet" rule law, not to mention their earlier "Give 3 Feet" driver education campaign.

My point is--just because they have one branch that wants to be a "go-to" sports machine doesn't mean that's all there is to Cascade. David Hiller, Chris Rule, Tessa Greegor--they do good work. And if you can support them and the work they do financially, please do. After having worked with them for a few months over election season last fall, I have nothing but good things to say about their level of dedication to improving cycling infrastructure, driver/cyclist education, and so forth. Same goes for their education department.
