Hey I think I’m gonna ride around the Olympic Peninsula this spring or summer… who wants to go?

Looking to do it in 6 days, or about 55 miles/day, not including side trips for camping, etc. Maybe a Saturday thru Thursday; but would also keep that Fri/Sat/Sun open, just in case of mechanicals or other delays. Or, for that matter, if I/we decide to stretch it out an extra couple days to enjoy it more.

Times -- As of right now, I think the only dates I cannot do this are April 14-23, and the weekend of July 18-19. Obviously, doing it later would have a better chance of good weather, but if in summer, would also involve a lot more car traffic. In certain respects, I think May 16-21 would be ideal for this.

Camping -- Got some tentative ideas for locations, but am all ears to suggestions re. this, or whatever else, if you've biked the Oly Pen.

If and when you end up doing this--I'd absolutely love to go. Given my current situation, tho--that's a pretty tentative maybe. But oh, how I'd love to go! I know for a fact that the boy-bot would, as well.

Yep, that route looks pretty awesome. Depending on work blah blah blah I'd like to try and go.

I once made it to Ilwaco in 2 days going around the Peninsula. I don't recommend it.

I'd highly suggest finding a smallish backpack that you strap to the top of a rack or something in order to do some sweet backpacking along the way. Definitely check out Bogachiel. I'd also hit up Port Townsend. Stay at Fort Warden State Park, get a beer at Sirens. Exploring Indian & Marrowstone Islands would be cool too. I have no idea what my schedule will be like around that time, but I'd be game for a tour 'round the mountains.

I would like to participate with this, but I have a conflict on the 16th; the Tour De Cure diabetes fundraiser.... I could theoretically leave the 17th though. I need to get a vacation request in sooner than later so MOAR PLANNING!

If I go along, we can crash at my parents at PA the first day. They have eight acres of land and would not mind some bicycle hobos camping overnight.

Put me down for a maybe. I really want to do something like this. Just comes down to if I'm going to be away on a sailing trip.

Stoked to see all the tentative interest. So does anyone besides Langston have thoughts re. May 16 for start date? We could even leave then, and do short days those first two days ... I'm sure langston wouldn't have much trouble catching up, the big stud that he is.

Or.. any other ideas for Saturday start dates, anyone? Other good ones for me:
June 20
April 4
April 25

At any rate, I should give my work about 3 wks notice before taking off a whole week.

bobhall ... Seattle to Ilwaco, via Forks and Aberdeen.. in two days? What? That's 320 miles! You, sir, are a freak of nature. :) No, I have no intention/desire of trying something like that.. whether or not there's panniers involved.

Re. side trips ... Bogachiel would be way cool; South Fork of the Hoh is another valley I've always wanted to check out, too. Or maybe Olympic Hot Springs but only if in springtime; in summer it gets way too crowded. Also wouldn't mind having a full day (so two nights) somewhere on the ocean.

The only bad dates for me are June 13th, and July 12-13th. Starting April 25th looks pretty good. Weather will probably be stable-ish by then but the traffic will still be off-season.

Could also do May 16th, but I doubt Langston is going to want to do the Tour de Cure, bust ass to catch up, then do 60mi a day for 5 days straight. Never met him, maybe he's the type, but fuck if I could do that.

Side trips- I really like the beaches around Kalaloch and the trails/area in general at Quinault Lake. Never been to the Hoh, that would be pretty cool too.

It's not outside the pale. I'm also not afraid of using *gasp* public transportation to eat up missing miles to catch y'all as well. I have a somewhat complicated summer of availability due to Seattle Sounder band and other vacation adventures, so don't make the plans around my needs. I'll adapt or pass.

I am down with this. I'm gonna be in school 'till the end of May, so June 20th could work for me.

I'm not sure I can take that much vacation time though, what're the thoughts on leaving early/catching up late?

I like the idea of biking along the ocean on the outer edge of the peninsula, and am totally game... but it's usually windy as fuck out on the coast. Maybe plan those days with shorter miles?

June 20th is looking better and better, because now of the West Side Invite the weekend of May 21. I really wanted to go to PDX for this last year.

Cool ... that works pretty well for me too, since I might be taking a class as well this spring, which would be from mid-April to mid-June.

Actually, June 20 is the Fremont Solstice parade, but no biggie on that, I've seen enuf Solstice parades.

I'd still be up for the May 16 option if some of you all wanna go then. Not ideal for the school schedule, but less cars on the road, since it’s before the start of the “summer driving season”.

Maybe the interested parties could just get together, drink booze, and pick a starting date for the tour. Hmm?

When you guys figure something out, let me know. I'm not going to put down any dates yay or nay, in the interest of just getting something to happen. If it works for me, great, otherwise, have a good time.

Now stop planning and ride some fucking bikes!

For what it's worth, seeing as I was going to be departing Seattle for about two years for work in late June or early July, my plan was to host the bike camping before I left, a la Ben Country.

It'd be somewhere my side of the Sound, natch. Was thinking Scenic Beach via Bainbridge and Poulsbo, but if this tour came up in June, I'd probably do this instead.

Oh yea, in spite of all the slooper sized beers, a decision of sorts was reached last Thursday as to the date for this to start.. June 20.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the "meeting" was actually only Ethan, Monie, and myself. Well, and a girl that made good book/movie recommendations. And a blurry guy with glasses. Damn Sloop...

Well, finally got the word yesterday ... I can has vacation time for June 22-26! Still open to ideas for earlier start dates, if people start making motions towards that ... my work has been flexible in the past re. changes in vacation timing.

If people need to bail entirely, no super big deal; I'll probably go regardless. Would be all the more delighted tho to have a bunch of you biketards come along.

Anyone who's fairly sure they wanna go, send me your email address (if it's not shown on your profile) and I'll start a email thread eventually for MOAR PLANNING!

It is much beter to get off of highway 12 by going north a couple of blocks into Montesano and take the Monte-Elma Rd. It's easy to find. Follow that to Elma and continue straight ahead onto Elma McLeary and back on course in Mcleary.

okay, I have my vacation request in for 6.22-6.26. The office vaca calendar is wide open for that week, so I should have no problem getting greenlighted for the trip. I have to be home Sunday the 28th by 4:00pm in time for a Sounders game!

featherhead: yeah I'd driven that road once as a detour when the highway was closed, but had forgotten about it… good idea, thx.

langston: great! yeah I'm thinking I'd like to be back on Saturday even, to have all of Sunday to unpack/recover/etc. Eight days should be plenty; averages to like 40 miles per day...

i'm for sure riding this shit, that week, unless i get severely ill or we have an asteroid fall, hurricane, terrorist attack, etc. :) .... and will be starting on June 20, unless there's a big movement to push it back to the 21st; no later than that tho, or not for me at least.

definitely starting an email thread soon about this (promise) ... so like i said, for anyone considering this, send me your email address if it isn't available/obvious.

A'ight, I have June 20th-28th off, and my touring bike is ready except for a crunchy freewheel.

'84 Trek 720! I'm stoked.

Soooo the email thread has been fairly silent...

well, shit. I might be out.

turns out there are numerous volunteer events that i'd really like to go to, plus i'm moving at the end of June, and all of this piled on top of each other might cancel out bike touring. :(

Milx: nice! will get back to your email soon. So it sounds like it's you, Langston and myself.. with Andrew_c being in the "maybe" camp as well, I think. Would be cool to have one or two more (I was thinking 5 or 6 would be ideal for this) but whatever, this'll be fun times for sure.
