maple. ugh. Gave up on maple when I discovered matlab.
If you need matlab, I may be able to hook you up (as long as you don't have windows xp)

I had two or three old copies of matlab floating around that I don't use because they don't run under xp. I can't remember if I kept them or not.

My physics profs in college encouraged us to use maple. Did all kinds of crazy stuff with it like solving partial differential equations. I hated it.

It would have to be another day since I'm at work.

Yup. You could.
I've played around with LaTeX but can pretty much do everything with Word's equation editor.

Plus you never see maple outside of academic environments so once you leave school, that particular skill set is useless. I don't use matlab much at work because NOAA has some weird program they use that's good for what I do.

But everyonce in a while I'll decide I want to do some odd project like prove that the lottery is just a tax on people who can't do math.

Hey I don't laugh, I'm not mean like that. I do feel sorry for you when your teachers make you use Maple as a word processor or some such crap. I don't know why anyone would think it should be used for that purpose. It or Mathematica can be handy when you don't want to analytically solve some shitty integral or something, though.

Matlab makes pretty plots :)

Maple is one of the UW site-licensed programs, so if you or anyone you know is a UW student you can download it. I actually have Maple 8 sitting on my compy, and could put it on CD for you.

Sweet monkey Jesus... Writing math in Word is like riding a department store bicycle. About all you can say for it is that it works.

Oh, interesting. I looked and it apparently is site licenced, but only staff and faculty can use it on their personal computers (presumably students have to go to MSCC or something to use it, or run it from one of the unix machines that have it installed). Fortunately, I am UW staff so I shall try filling out this request form to see if they'll give me a license.

I was hoping to come out and ride this tonight but alas I can't make it.... I should be done having ink stabbed into my arm at about 10 pm in Ballard. I'll hit the tin hat for a drink if anyone is interested since I'll be next door.

call me if you're down.... 2068183749

shit. now i have to decide..

a) skip turning in my online histrory homework due at 8pm and ride bikes
b) stay home and be studious and ask nick to grab that from you

either way it prevents my return to seattle central to use the lab (closes at 10pm). so, basically, i owe you.

Under the terms of the license, as a grad student I count as faculty, which is handy.

And I generally take "personal computer" to mean any system I happen to be using at the moment.
