Thought i'd put the word out that two hoodlums in all black wearing hockey masks, yanked me off the bike this afternoon around 5pm today on my way home in the middle of Sam Smith park along the I-90 trail while heading west. Just crossed MLK and two guys were hanging out on the picnic bench on the south side of trail and one started walking my direction casually and before I knew it, had ahold of my jacket. Don't know in hindsight why I didn't take evasive action to avoid him (not to mention being initially oblivious to the facial protection they were sporting until they were up in my business), but tried to peddle out of his grasp to no avail. Got punched in the face, was on the ground and another sock in the eye by his twin, all black wearing hockey buddy. A bit delirious as they demanded I give them everything I had. They weren't smart enough to remove my pannier and when they couldn't, dug through to my wallet and were off down MLK where a fellow cyclist followed them until they looped back north through the park near the Mt. Baker tunnel entrance direction.
Seriously pissed that I must now ride home from work paranoid and on guard. Was already disturbed by the attack a while back of a commuter exiting the tunnel. Thinking of putting some kind of crazy Mad Max knife thingy out the sides of my front fork now...
Though I usually keep a pretty good clip through the park, and feel I can out maneuver anything/one, we cyclists are pretty inviting targets with our bags full of (potential and actual) goodies and if your not expecting someone to be suddenly aggressive toward you, while you're happily peddling through the park.....well, you can get a pretty unfortunate blindside like yours truly.
Cop said that he will request more police bike patrol down that section. Don't know that that will do much for the long term due to perpetrators usually laying low for awhile before hitting the same spot again. Unfortunately, I will certainly be more apprehensive toward someone in my way on that trail now. Look out for each other! And don't walk in front of me or you'll get my foot up your ass.
Thanks for listening -
Cheers,
Ryan

I know it is a ride night, but it might be worth getting a group of cyclists to go to the East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition meeting(s):
http://www.sngi.org/epcpc/epcpc2.html
The EPCPC meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm at the Seattle Vocational Institute, 2120 South Jackson, Room 401.
This is the 5th attack on cyclists in that area that I have heard about in the last year.

It might be worth carrying a big stick with you. Dudes start getting fucked up by cyclists might prove a decent deterrent in the future.

along those lines:
easier to carry, also works well telescoped "in" as a yawara/fistpack/kubotan...

That sucks, sorry to hear you got nabbed.
Ride faster and keep an eye out is probably what I'd do.
That tunnel is a choke point just waiting for an IED.

Every bicyclist has a weapon with them, and any potential mugger would have a hard time packing something bigger.
It looks like this
I swear to god if anybody tried to mug me while on my bike I wouldn't stop beating them WITH my bike until I heard them or the frame crack.

i wonder if you'd get that covered by a warranty?
"i beat a mugger senseless with my bike and the frame cracked, can i get a replacement?"
if i was in the warranty department id fill that order in a heartbeat.

its great and all to puff and posture. Unless you've been trained to fight and are used to operating while taking a beating, the attackers are going to have the advantage of already having you on the ground and kicking the shit out of you by the time it gets to defending yourself or retaliating.
best option would be to have the baton somewhere you can grab it for something to hit back with. TrikerTrev had that big knife on tearaway velcro. Could work on a road bike, maybe find a way to incorporate the pump peg/pump concept to keep something wedged up there
my compassion goes to the guy who got jumped. I won't lie and say I miss riding to the Eastside every day.

first off, this is awful. glad you're okay.
second off, definitely get a telescoping baton. it needs to be kept on your person and it needs to be looked over until you need it. any weapon that is not in your control is a weapon that will be used against you. when they knock you off your bike and start mugging, anything on your bike could be taken by them as easily as by you.
third off... this is why i'm posting:
DON'T SPRAY MACE WHILE ON YOUR BIKE!
don't spray any airborne agent while you're moving, it will blow back into your face and you'll be a sitting duck to the guy's friend who wasn't hit in the spray cone.
i'm definitely big about going to the police crime prevention coalition meeting.

Sorry to hear that, and thanks for the heads up.
The girlfriend and I commute that way every single day, and we'll definitely be paying more attention there.
I'd love to think that I'd be able to kick someone in the face for you should I see them try that shit again.

I might be able to chuck a pista, but my SOMA is 30 lbs unloaded and I've usually got a bag on it.
plus its a bad value proposition. i might have 20 or 30 bucks cash on me but its gonna be like $150 for a new wheel I busted on some dudes head

Thanks Everyone!
You are indeed my people and we will not be intimidated by petty hockey goalies.
My first mistake would be that I was not expecting a hit. I have been commuting this path for three years with no incident. During daylight hours, when I'm not on the road fending off sleepy / stupid / anxious wads of flesh in their mobile offices, I like to enjoy the park momentarily. Secondly, I've never been attacked before... by anyone, not to mention two men in hockey masks, so poo on me for not being immediately a bad ass street fighter... I will, however, starting training immediately!
Today I will be posting a simple bold notification, as has been done previously, that I was attacked in that area for the People and the perpetrators.
Wished I checked your comments earlier for that police meeting.. I'll continue to read your posts and hopefully stay in touch about making our anger more known to the aforementioned hockey players.
By the way, I look supper bad on my new license.
Cheers,
Ryan

Good to hear you made it through more or less in one piece.
As far as arming one's self for defense, I'd recommend against it unless you take the time to get trained on the use of that weapon and understand the huge risks you take when you escalate the situation. You're best defense is being aware of your surroundings and broadcasting that awareness to potential attackers.
Or, you could just mount one of these to your bike:

Or carry a fucking sword. Like that dude on the waffle bike who had his machete on quickdraw with magnets.
