in leiu of finding some giant tubes we can all ride down or a handbasket to ride in, and against my best judgement, i'm deciding to be democratic about ben country quatre. but really i just need a bail out.

tourstyle - use that stupid heavy bike for once. day 2
penrose point - hilltastic
south widbey state park - the funky cold medina

so stoke up some quality planning
i might even count the votes.

My 25 cents:
-The sooner we hit a ferry the faster the quality of the ride increases.

-Day 2 is a mess since we all break camp at different times and have different levels of function due to the previous nights poor decisions, thus longer day 2 rides can be a pain and harder to make sure folks know the route.

-Penrose (or scenic beach) would be my pick since we get to quieter streets quicker, the route can be scenic, the distance (~30miles) is a happy medium, there is a shower, and it doesn't mimic any of the route from last year.

Penrose sounds good. I haven't been there, for one. Alsom we can go through Tacoma on the way back, right?

It doesn't read as well as when you stand in the kitchen screaming "Yo I'mma Biitch!" at the top of your lungs.

Joemma doesn't take reservations, but has better sunsets. If everyone could fit at the two biker/hiker sites that might work Ok. Penrose has the group site, which I see as a big plus. Also Penrose has a better beach for swimming/wading.

The route down to the Key Peninsula looks fun. I personally know there are some extr-hilly hills in that area, especially once you leave the Key Peninsula Highway. Which you'll want to do because it has zero shoulder + drivers going to and from their meth labs.

There's construction on hwy16 at Burley-Olalla road, I don't think we can cross there -though it might be finished my May. I know the map is preliminary, these are just things off the top of my head. I would be fun to at least to a quick side trip through banner forest(corner of Banner Rd. and Olalla rd -close to the ferry) on the way out or back.

Or, on the way back you could cross the Narrows bridge, then ferry to Vashon and ride it and then ferry back to West Seattle or Downtown. Fun.

i'm holding my answer until i get to scout the long way 'round whidbey.

i agree though that the ride to the ferry is going to be very similar to last year.

A few thoughts from this all-star:

WA-16 construction south of Port Orchard is still on, however there is a fairly clearly marked detour from both directions. I'd rate it as accessible. Also, +1 for ride across Vashon for return trip.

Remember the Hood Canal Bridge will be non-crossable in May. This pretty much rules out that spot on US-101, but not Scenic Beach, which is actually in Seabeck, don't know why there's a Google Maps return for it on the Olympic Penninsula side of the Hood Canal.

I don't care which weekend Ben chooses. It's his party. But I'd rather know sooner rather than later so I can get that weekend off.

I like tour style for a ride, but it seems long for a ben country, especially the 72 mile portion of the loop. It sounds like a great July or August tour.

Scenic Beach State Park isn't on the list, but seems like a natural option. It can be long on Day 1, short on Day 2, has a group site.

I like the tradition of doing it closer to Ben's birthday, but I'll go whenever the damn thing is.

BtAH,
It would be great if you could have the ben country over here this year so I could come too. I am right next a huge lake and there is a great beach. I can almost guarantee that no one will bitch about a huge bonfire and the weather will be sunny, very sunny, by then. (ignore the sandstorms) We are located out in the Al Anbar province just south of the Euphrates River. The locals love to party too as long as you don't mind a little random gunfire into the air.

I paid $125 for a case of MGD Light in Kuwait in 1996. And 2 of them were missing. True story.

So much for dry country... I was in Bahrain for a bit once, and they warned us it was dry, which it clearly wasn't if you knew where to go.

in true dictatorial fashion, i'm disregarding the popular vote and choosing what is best for you.

the destination is south whidbey island state park because their group camp facilities are awesomer.

and in a show of indelible reverence to your mom it will be may 2nd. she better make the weather nice.

route:
part 1
part 2
more info and regular thread to come...

nice route, that. I lived in Mukilteo for about 8 years as a kid, right on 5th St. there. We'll have to hit Whidbey Island Coffee (just above the ferry landing) before we board.

Benevolent dictatorship? How is this any different from the US federalist republic system? Well, besides the meaningless approval ratings. Will we get an approval rating vote on the regular thread?!
