Hey Y'all,

My bike was stolen out of my side-yard night before last. 54 cm Green Surly Long Haul Trucker, last seen with Brooks saddle, rack, and fenders. Decals scratched out on left side to say "URLY" and "ucker". Should you find the perp, I authorize the use of force in the service of its recovery.

Any chance you had renter's insurance?

Sorry man.

I'm assuming you've already alerted the pawnshops/bike shops in the area.

How was it locked, or did you take after your sister?

Posted to point83 forum two days after bike stolen, you say? Curious! Wonder why a dude would avoid such a resource. How about you leave my sister out of it and I won't pop the valve stems off your wheels at the next ride.

Do you know your serial number? It will help if we have this ahead of time, in case there is a repo opportunity - a tricky proposition with all the LHT's around.

Indeed. The bike shop has it on file; they'll get back to me.

It was indeed not locked-up. The thief spared my mountain bike, which was sitting on the front porch, also not locked-up. Evidence would seem to point to a single hipster.

I'm gonna start getting cozier with my bikes in the living room. Whether they take up too much space or not.

I'm pretty certain that if you lack space indoors for your bicycles, you're doing it wrong. Maybe you should get rid of a television or some furniture.

There are of course many ways to store bikes indoors without them taking up a lot of space. The more creative ways are the awesomer ones.

You are aware that our gentle ribbing means we're paying attention right?
How about I leave the Aden/Rogelio dynamic where it's at and I tackle anyone riding an "URLY ucker" with a low slung Brooks? I'll even slit the back of their ankles for you.

And do please leave my valve stems alone because I don't want to be obliged to Joby for his wheel repair services as we all know where that leads.

Also: you bought your bike on my birthday.

Yes thank you, your ankle-slitting services would be welcome. Please excuse my testiness - I'm in a mood too sour for victim-blaming and sister-ribbing.

I wonder how many lurkers are now calling bike shops about their lost LHT bikes with that serial number now.

Interesting point, though I have a hard time believing that there are any mustache-twirling villains lurking in this thread thrilled at the idea of calling a bunch of shops in service of a long-shot opportunity to re-steal a bicycle. On the other hand, I apparently place too much faith in people.

It's sort of turning into a Corbin Dallas situation at Recycled.

Brandon - you're an interweb- savvy dude so maybe I'm not telling you anything you don't know or can't do better - but I remembered the above thread from awhile back. It was a really simple way to search the bike threads of all craigslists everywhere. The girl in the above thread got her Independent Fabrications bike stolen from the SU campus. And after running this query a couple times a week found it being sold in like, Tuscon AZ of all places or something.

Times like this also make me remember to double check that I have the serial numbers on all my bikes recorded, and remind me - yet again - that I still need to get renters insurance for sillyness such as this.

Condolences son. Best of luck in your hunt.

Oh - I'm with the others in that I'd pull that serial number off the internet. You didn't think they'd take your bike out of your side yard either.

Dude I think I just saw your bike.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=30443388&id=1279533149&saved#/photo.php?pid=30443388&id=1279533149

Big ass picture

http://sweetbike.org/gallery/v/bike/parts/brandons/IMG00032-20090427-1837.jpg.html?g2_imageViewsIndex=1

Sorry I didn't get a good pic of his face. I took a pic of the saddle and by the time my slowass camera phone cycled around for another shot he was riding away.

Black fenders and a rear rack. Didn't see left side decals. Dude had strapped a black basket to the front bars. Black guy, mid 40s early 50s, dreads, red sweats, red shell jacket, big broad straw hat. Maybe this bike is yours, maybe not. That saddle was a B17-special all caved the fuck in like yours - see pic. I walked up to him and said, I like your bike! He said, yeah people seem to like this old thing. I'm said that's funny because that's not an old bike, thats a new bike, and I like it. Will you sell it to me? And he rode off. I was on foot.

He was rolling South on Eastlake at 6pm on the sidewalk. If it's not him, then no big whoop. But yeah. I just couldn't positively ident the bike.

Side note. Keeping a zip lock bag with a photo copy of your ID stashed down in the seat tube of your bike will allow police to determine ownership should you find someone riding a bike you believe to be yours (assuming the zip lock bag is still in the seat tube) and you decide to call them instead of beating the ever loving shit out of said person.

You could also tape a note to your cartridge bottom bracket "Dear shop employee: If the name on the shop slip is different from the following information, please contact THE RIGHTFULL OWNER OF THIS BIKE at (xxx)xxx-xxxx." Include your name and address on the note. A buddy of mine recovered a $4000 mtn bike using this method.

Those are both good ideas. Think I might do something like that when I get home. Just don't forget to pull them out if you sell the bike.

Someone should let him know there is a free bike tune up clinic 7:00-7:30pm at Westlake on Thursday.

got an SPD case number open for it you'd like to share?

not that i have anything against the u-lock of justice, but it seems like calling the po-po and tailing the guy seems like a good course of action next time he's seen. i'd hate to see the cops let the hobo go because of some technicality where one of us couldn't prove on the spot that it was stolen.

Hey,

I've been on only a couple of rides with y'all - and that was last year - but I saw this bike yesterday evening in front of the park next to the Columbia City library on Rainier Ave. Same dready, black guy (as described by tehschkott) was riding it and before I had a chance to ask him about the bike, he got on the #7 bus heading south on Rainier.

Looks like it's consistently around downtown. We should really go track this guy down and get that bike back. I'd suggest a couple groups of people so we could actually stop him if we see him. The call in the po po.

so if anyone sees this guy and stops him to ask about the bike, be cool about it.

Play by play:
1) see guy & bike
2) Call 911, just tell them you need cops "here now". They'll pick up your locoation via the E911 network.
3) Approach guy and tell him you had a friend have a bike exactly like this one stolen, and ask to see the serial number on the bottom of the frame. Don't accuse the guy of stealing it, or he'll be uncooperative and flee.
4) ID the bike and stall stall stall till the cops come. If the serial doesn't match up, just let him go. If he starts getting antsy and wants to bail (and isn't on the bike), take a wheel off to "check something".

serial # is M3042438
DATE OF PURCHASE: 9/3/08

Do you think it's time I call the SPD and see if I can find a sympathetic ear?

You filled out a report with the police after it was stolen, right? It can't hurt to follow up and report that it may have been sighted and give a description.

Might want to post on Cascade and get the squids looking out as well.

I actually didn't, if you can believe it. I have a variety of excuses, but none of them are particularly good.

Seems like you've even run out of those bad excuses now.

The SPD non-emergency number is 206-625-5011

Give 'em a call.

The freshly minted case number, with the SPD, is 2009-144923. If you see the bike, stop the dude and call the police. The case file has the serial number, so they'll be able to get the bike back.
