Hi:

I'm thinking about Amtrak to Portland for a few days with my son. We are both hardcore road cyclists. Any suggestions on what we should do over the course of about 3 days? Bike shops to visit, places to ride, etc? He's 18 and I'm 52, but very immature.

Thanks,
Eric

hardcore road cyclists, eh?

the ride out the columbia river gorge is pretty fantastic if the weather is kind to you. you can also strike out the other way and ride to the sea. in the city, portland is one big biketropolis, you can't go too wrong just riding around.

I did this in September. I recommend it, with a note to hit the old (but recently repaved) Pioneer Highway up above the freeway on the way out.

You know what Portland has that we don't have so much? Rivers. Ride to a river. Ride along a river. Ride over rivers on cool bridges.

Also, get yourself the bike map that costs money and improvise.

Note: if you had not said 'road cyclist', I would have said: 'Forest Park'.

I rode that too, if you have anything bigger than 25cm tires it's a fun ride

always check out the bike portland weekend thread, but this tends to more hippie-activist city biker stuff. http://bikeportland.org/

also, you might be able to find some rides with one of the various clubs/teams. haven't tried that, so ymmv.

if you're coming down this weekend, you can ride to and watch some collegiate road racing. http://www.cycling.pdx.edu/ for more info.

Even most car tires don't approach 25cm wide.

That's not the only thing wrong with that statement.

Non-bike related, but Powell's bookstore is a must-visit for me every time I'm down there. A five-story bookstore the size of a city block. And that doesn't include their technical bookstore down the street.

Also, check out the bacon maple bar at Voodoo donuts (about a half-mile east on Burnside from Powell's). Totally ridiculous delicious.

I took my bike on the train down to Portland last week. I'm extremely softcore, so I just rode around town, over bridges, along the Willamette and from bar to bar.

Keep in mind that you need to make a reservation to ensure they have a spot on the train for your bike. And make sure you don't book yourself on the Coast Starlight. I believe they make you box your bike on that train.

Overall it's a beautiful way to travel.
