Ben Country Fourclosed on both tandems. Razi and Sara had their exploding derailler/broken chain this morning, and Clair and I broke our drive chain a second time this afternoon. Bent the chain coming into Lynnwood, and decided to drop the tandem off at Remington's. On the way there, it snapped in not one, but two places. Heading back up to pick up the pieces now.
All in all, though, great ride. Thanks Ben, Andre, and everyone else who made this happen!

I failed in so many ways this weekend. But it was still awesome.
After biking from the campsite to the ferry with everyone, I met a random guy at the pub in Mukilteo, who happened to live in Seattle (having recently moved from Portland), and was tooling about the countryside in a rental car. After i mentioned the disaster with my trailer, he offered to give me a ride back to Seattle. Which, I took him up on (lazy, opportunistic person that i am...). We stopped in Edmonds to pick up the trailer from my aunts, and managed to break down the trailer enough to fit it, my bike, and his bike, in the back of his fancy rental Dodge hatchback.
Then I biked over to Ben's house to pick up Una, who is not doing any more bike touring, barring some serious progress on training, me developing a sudden ability to pull 100lbs on my bike, and/or her developing a sudden ability to run at actual bike speed.

Hah. Did that tire make it out of Mukilteo?

Dear Ben,
glad your camping trip was awesome. maybe next year.
It made it as far as Lynnwood Park and Ride. My spare tire turned out to be too small. I ended up taking the bus back to Seattle with Kalen and Clair.
How did Kalen and Claire get their tandem home?

Next year everyone has to ride single speeds with 1/8" chains and Armadillo Tires. No broken chains, no sheared derailleurs, no chain suck, no flats.

We can start rolling Cascadian and get a Dodge Dart with everyone's pit bike, extra wheelsets, snacks, and a couple mechanics riding right behind the peloton.
If we start charging a membership fee we could afford nicer things.

We should all chip in for Ro to get a Honda Goldwing. Then he could escort us in style. Three wheels or less!

Is this for 'Ben Country 5: Carkeek Is Far Enough' that we were discussing?
I was thinking Fay Bainbridge but yeah, you get the idea.

I still support the idea of a Fay Bainbridge overnight on a thursday. Easy to be back downtown by 8:00.

We carefully rode it to Remington's house, and managed to keep the chain from breaking for the first mile, only to have it break in two places at once a few blocks from his house. Dropped it off there, took the bus to Seattle with Stroky and came back with Clair's pickup truck.
Good timing in that we were close to the Park and Ride and Remi's place. Bad timing in that we were almost done with all that Interurban Trail bullshit. I hate that trail north of the county line.

+1
The last ferry back is at 12:55 which would accomidate those who don't want to sleep out. I will fight hard for this next time the weather looks really shiny.
But that is still 2 months off and yes I would consider sleeping under the stars on an additional Thursday night.

Once again I survived the BEN COUNTRY. Thanks for letting me warm my cockles on the fire of youth. One of these times, I will give the nod and wink, I want you to throw me on that fire and watch as my skin sizzles and my black soul descends to Hades. Well, maybe next year.

What about fixed gears with 1/8" chains and 700x32 Schwalbe Marathons? That worked perfectly for me.

Yeah because we we didn't bring 20 cars and lose half the ride to sag wagons home. Not that I wasn't grateful to throw my pack in Andre's truck - I was. Good thing we're nothing like those Cascade pussies.

Look dude, if you're not cool enough to have a subaru, a girlfriend and a girlfriend that will drive your subaru up to ben country ... it's not my problem.
Next year there will in fact be a strict No Carpooling rule for all persons driving to Ben Country. I think with a little more business prowess i could have made some money carrying people back on sunday.

I thought about selling rides this year, but I feel really slimy trying to make money off of friends.
Still Andrew was very nice and chipped in for ferry fare, Derrick and Shannon hooked us up with some coffee for bringing their bikes home, and Lee gave me a few Subaru roof rack parts. All very generous!
5 bikes (folder in the trunk, 4 on the roof), 5 people, and camping gear is definately the limit for the Forester.

It took Ben Country to get me to finally unpack my camping gear from 6 months ago, including a bunch of food that I'd forgotten about. And speaking of packing away some food, did we ever! Many thanks to all who planned and shopped and prepared and cooked those meals, that was wonderful.
And you can bet I was tempted to try to crawl into one of those cars for the return trip. But the ride home was fun, as was the pub stop (despite the bermuda triangle effect), and now I feel like I'm getting my cycling legs back, after a long winter's nap.
