This question will be discussed intelligently online right after people can have civilized online discussions about abortion, evolution and whether 2pac or Biggie was the better rapper.

The conversation i linked is quite civilized by my standards.

And yes, my standard means most of the people agree with me.

Upon re-reading the comments, I guess this one is pretty civilized, but only because all of the opinions seem to be pro-cycle.

Check this one out:
http://www.blueoregon.com/2009/03/bike-tax-no-we-should-pay-bicyclists.html

One of my favorite responses:
some jackass wrote:
I say just do it and enact the tax and if the cyclysts have a problem with it, then I would suggest getting a lawyer to combat the tax.

Unless you can afford to change it, you're no threat. Just shut up and live with it.

I hate people.

If they have a sticker than you know who it is and you have some way to track them down.”

People should wear stickers so when they cross against the light in front of my car I can write their license down and report them!

Point of fact, motorists don't really give a shit if we follow the law - they just want us to stay out of their way. They'd get pissed off if everyone actually stopped at every stop light and sign and slowed traffic down for everyone as we took the lane like a true vehicle should. But I do think it'd be pretty cool if motorists could only legally pass cyclists in designated passing zones, and not wherever they feel like gunning it past us being as dangerous as they want.

I didn't actually read the article link. Is that requisite for contributing intelligently to this conversation? This is the internet afterall. I thought I could just fire from the hip and be good.

Quote:
Rep. Nick Kahl (D-Portland) was first speak up from the Committee. He said he wasn’t supportive of this bill until this weekend. Kahl said he came around for two reasons. First, he had a conversation with his brother-in-law who told him: “The only think more annoying than getting caught behind a bicyclist on the road is getting caught behind a bicyclist who’s obeying every single law.” (Room erupts in laughter). The other thing Kahl said won him over is that he just bought a new bike. While on a test ride near the Bike ‘N Hike on SE Grand in Portland he said, “I realized how many times I didn’t come to a full stop.” “I’m fully in support of this bill,” he said.

The link was terrible, and lacking in any meaningful content in total one month old news way.

That is totally rad. Thanks for bringing the Idaho-stop law (totally rad: for a bike, stop-sign = yield, red light = stop-sign) story to my attention , I hadn't seen that yet.

Continuing in the vein, Rep. David Edwards (D-Hillsboro) also shared that he feels the bill “presents a level of uncertainty”. He then asked Rohde, “Would you also be in favor of allowing pedestrians to just come up to a street and go across without stopping?” Rohde replied that pedestrians are actually currently allowed to do that.

hilarious!

Here we go again. Lazy slob cagers trying to bring down their betters, the cyclists. I will pay a tax gladly if, AND ONLY IF ALL the money is used for a seperate, paved trail system that does not allow cars. You grunting cagers need to be thanking me and all my fellow cyclists at every opportunity. Don't blame us because you have become out of shape slobs. Get off your doughy asses and get on your bikes. The day will come when you are no longer allowed to pollute our air. It is long over due. What makes you idiots think you have the right to dirty up the air the rest of us breath? When they ban all gas powered vehicles then I will pay a tax. Until then, weakling drivers, pay your road taxes, drive your fat asses everywhere, and shaddapp!

I have a nice office job now managing kids flying RC airplanes with cameras. They get to fly the video game and I get to sit and watch it all on a computer screen. We never have to leave the base, and now that I have figured out how to get the forum passed the filter I have started trying to be productive again.

We did see a dead camel on the road last week with wires coming out its butt. I will let you guess what happened next.

I like the part at the end, where some driver claims that 14 out of 17 cyclists he watched were breaking the law, yet he felt that only 20% of his fellow drivers are breaking the law.
'Cause, like, on the freeway and on the city thoroughfares everybody obeys the speed limit, right?

Found a great video on the Idaho stop law proposal for Oregon. If this shit doesn't make it clear, don't know what will...
