AUGUSTA, Maine — It’s illegal for cars and trucks to pass a stopped school bus in Maine.

A legislator now wants to expand the law so bicyclists would also have to stop for buses that have their red lights flashing.

"watch for bikes" is like "watch for cars" junior edition. it's good training for the little ones.

also, i killed a rat once in my spokes along the bgt. must have been old, because the fork went through it like butter.

I got screamed at by a busdriver on Mercer when I was doing a lap during a downpour one winter. I stopped behind the bus 3 times in like 200 meters and for the fourth time I decided it was rediculous, so I crossed the street, rolled along the gravel with a pedal unclipped, and kept going. He rolled down his window in the rain yelling that I couldn't pass. He never caught me because he probably made another 324123123 stops in the remaining 5 miles of the Mercer loop.

Must have been a steel fork, I guess the carbon ones don't work so well.

yeah that happened to me too! i was on the sidewalk, and i pointed out that you don't have to stop if you're on the sidewalk.

Or the time on Mercer Island team technium got blasted with the air horn on the bus. Honestly it was just a traffic situation I rarely encountered and so a "red light" on the Mercer loop when coming down a steep hill on a fresh fixed gear was more variables than I had considered up to that point. Luckily my riding times and routes don't overlap with school buses but kids going to and from school is something I'm in strong support of and the world should stop for them to let them get safely home for their after school video games. It's Bicycle Jihad not Bicycle Taliban remember.

But while the topic is on killing squirrels and Taliban, Spokane is making use of Thermobaric weapons (aka fuel-air bombs) on a small scale.

Haha, awesome. This is a distinction that's often lost...

I got stopped by the cops downtown. Passed a yellow bus on the left, splitting lanes.

They had a valid point, if a kid was crossing in front of the bus I would have really fucked them up had I hit him/her.

From then on I give it a wide berth rather than splitting lanes next to the bus.

The last and only time I got a ticket on my bike it was for passing a city bus - because I gave it too wide a berth (so as not to hit pedestrians) and crossed the yellow line. Actually I think the cop was trying to show off to the pretty lady in his passenger seat (gf/reporter/?) and he was looking for an excuse to poop on a biker. Then a bunch of cars and bikes crossed the yellow line to pass him while he had me "pulled over". When I pointed that out to him, he said he could only ticket one person at a time. When he finished ticketing me he failed to ticket the other cars that had passed us while we were stopped and were now at the stoplight. I congradulated him on doing such stellar police work.
Wow the lesson here is no matter what you do you're still going to get shit on by cops who don't like bikers.

(1) I echo the props for the distinction on Jihad v. Taliban. Further, I support stopping for school busses. Maybe because I have a kid of school age or because it just seems like the right thing to do.

(2) SPOKANE is fucking nuts! Don't you know better than to sneak up on a Veteran? How do you think a Veteran will react to small random explosions in the parks after living for a year or more under the constant threat of IDF and IEDs? Fuck You! I don't even stay around for the 4th of July anymore.
