These tracks are probably happening. Sound transit has the $$$ and the city will do the implementation and operation. The only question is what route will they go on and how badly will it screw over cyclists.

Down with public transit!

Up with bicycle subsidies!

Only buy bikes welded within 200 miles of your home!

i'm all for the streetcar. the real argument is between transit+bikes vs. street parking.

With no First Hill station making it into the Link tunnel from downtown to UW due to seismic concerns with the hill, this streetcar route has been the planned alternative for a while.

While tracks suck for bikes, public transit is a win. Like Link, the only hope for getting public transit that takes you somewhere not down the street is to build it and keep expanding it.

This could remove the "I can't ride up the hill" excuse.

They need to protect the bikes better, so when the inevitable {streetcar/asshat playing chicken} collision occurs, the bikes are spared and only the asshat's SUV is crumpled.

Top Tip #1:
Learn to ride on tracks.
Penutimate Tip: This is a good excuse to do another SLB ride, and have some fun, and also have a press kit with pictures of how they do it in other cities
Again, have a press kit with pictures of how they do it in other cities.

Basically, make it seem like ST/SDOT are drooling idiots because someone else has already done all the work, because they are drooling idiots because someone else has already done all the work.

Step 3: Safety third! who won the safety prize at Prof. Dave's fart-a-thon?

Also, I see cars get hit by the portland max more than rarely, less than often, and it's ALWAYS really funny, because it's not like they don't have ringing bells and flashing lights to warn you in plenty of time, and there's a BIG FUCKING TRAIN coming.

Seattle Transit Blog linked to this earlier article today that says the Capitol Hill streetcar may open years early in 2012.

Transit ahead of schedule is hot.
