i met up with some representatives of the .83 posse over at our semi-official u-district hangout, the college inn pub. about ten of us rolled from there up to the reload hq on capitol hill to register for the race. while we registered the crowd of cyclists grew and grew until it took up the entire sidewalk and stretched out into the lanes of traffic. at registration we coughed up our $5 and were given a spoke card and a costume - hamburgular facewear for the robbers and little badges and moustaches for the cops. we picked up our manifests and set about trying to plot the best route and figure out where everything was. eventually the lovely race administrators gave us the go signal and we hauled off in a huge mass for our first destinations. the coppers and robbers were separated at the start but quickly came back together.
with me i had henry and scotty as my fellow robbers, and we quickly hooked up with officer p.diddy as well.
1. 301 east broadway. the first checkpoint was a “bank heist” at the wamu on broadway. rachel was out front throwing bags of loot as riders came through. the race was off to an auspicious start as the well-known capitol hill bike pds were out trying to figure out what the hell was going on, and meanwhile folks dressed as cops were riding past them and running lights.
2. volunteer park shootout. the second checkpoint we went for was a time-limited one that was only available until 6pm. so we raced up to the volunteer park water tower for a ’shootout’ between the cops and robbers. we were segregated into small groups, and cheap waterguns and some water balloons were provided for us to drench one another. i got greg good. we handed over our waterguns to officer sherman, the best damn cop on the force, collected our stamp and moved on.
the manifest had one ’secret’ checkpoint and the only way to find out the location was to go back to the basement under reload and get a sharpie tattoo. unfortunately alot of people had the same thought and the line was ridiculously long. so we wisely decided to head out elsewhere and catch the local checkpoints.
3. 922 pike. with that in mind we headed down three blocks to the comet and picked up a murderer’s name for our manifest.
4. 6th & pine. we got mardi gras jewelry from a couple of rich dames blingin’ outside tiffany & co.
5. post alley. the next checkpoint was just through downtown - the ’scary’ alley. we locked up our bikes at pike market and hoofed it down post alley down where we were accosted by “drunk bums” who demanded quarters but signed our manifests anyhow.
6. speakeasy in the international district. we couldn’t find the checkpoint in the international district at maynard alley, supposedly south of 7th and off king. the alley we found, but only a bunch of fellow racers. somebody said the answer to the question of how many were killed was ‘13′, we said hey good enough, wrote it down and continued on. unfortunately scotty had previous engagement so he broke off at this point to head home.
7. freeway park. i’d never been there before, and it was huge. we split up and paul was the lucky one to find the murder date scrawled in chalk near the bathrooms.
8. re-load bags tattoo parlor. with all the checkpoint locations we knew to be close, it was time once again to return to re-load for a tattoo. there was still a line but we were tired, and somewhat excited to see justin behind us in line as he was the .83 favorite to win. i got a cop-killer tear and was given the location of the secret checkpoint. paul got tired of waiting and headed home at this point.
9. 730 east 10th. unfortunately, henry and i didn’t know where the hell this ‘mob hideout’ actually was, so we headed north on 10th and watched the numbers ascend. so we whipped around and headed south to seattle university on 10th until we realized we were going the completely wrong way. a full u-turn again and we went back north until we found the mob hideout. a quick game of double-bilnd blackjack later and we were on our way to the police headquarters to be booked.
10. police hq: 1617 yale. yeah, so we should have come here earlier but we had no idea where it was until we’d talked with enough folks. i’d thought it was near rei, but turns out yale has a tiny little dead-end part near the bauhaus. we were frisked and lined up against the wall, got mugshots taken and manifests fingerprinted before being sent on our merry way once more.
11. 2021 4th ave. a quick bomb down boren and denny sent us into downtown where we swung by the last checkpoint, collected the info and rushed to the end.
12. finish - jewelbox theatre. we arrived triumphantly but in something like 25th place. the bar was already packed with checkpoint folks and spirits were high as we recounted our adventures and ate and drank. i watched them hand out prizes for a while and then returned home exhausted from three hours of racing.
see henry and my ridiculous route!. it's only 14 miles but damn am i exhausted.
reload did an awesome job putting this on and i wish to give each and every person involved in this race 'mad props' for making it an excellent time.

That was a lot of fun, and man, they really put on a good event.
After the first cop checkpoint I caught up with Justin and Jason, and we began the hunt for 1617 Yale. Let's just say we completely blew it and rode all over the place. First by REI, then further up Eastlake there are some Yale streets, but it made no sense. We rode by one place with an address of 1611 on another street, but the only yale addresses (right next door) started in the 1900's. The volunteer park checkpoint closing time was closing in on us, so we hoofed it up the hill from Eatlake. Fuck that.
Then around and around and around. Oh yeah the drunken brawling at the start broke my fender bracket, so my fender was rubbing like a brake half the time. Sucked.
Haulin' ass through traffic was a blast. Thanks Justin and Jason for letting me tag along and waiting on the hills :)
I had to take off early for some family stuff, so I didn't turn in my manifest. Here it is.

I had a great time with this race as well. Here's my brief recap, different in that I was seperated from the group rather quickly and didn't wait around for others like a bad team member.

Drinking at the CIP was fun, I got there before most everyone else and went upstairs to the back bar of the Allegro for breakfast, coffee, drinks and a tasty shot of espresso/vodka shot thing that the bartender guy gave us all. I was with Josh, Garth, Benny the bartender and Max the fry cook(?) up there and saw the effective endof the UW game.
We all rode up to the hill after finishing pitchers of beer (much apologies josh) registered with the nine million other people and then kicked it at the Sattelite before the kick off.
I left with Matt and Chessa, made the first checkpoint down at WaMu and then burned back up to the Comet, and then to get the janky prison tat. I was in the line early, behind the two fleetfoot guys who ended up winning it all. Got my tatt and then hauled ass solo up to Volunteer Park to catch the last heat of the water balloon fight. I met up with Justin and Co. at this point, but they were off to get their tatts and i was onward. I picked up a kid who had just moved out here from Dartmouth, and we went to the secret spot on broadway/10th and then over the flyover to Yale/REI. Found the hidden local after about 10 min of riding around and promptly flatted my rear tube. I had lost the same tube on Thursday and didnt replace it wiht a new one yet, so I bummed a patched one from a mssgnr friend and rode on to the Tiffany's spot. Got our beads, and then on the way to Freeway park the tube went flat again. Major Bummer!
Dartmouth kid went home and I walked back to the Tiffanys checkpoint to bum another tube. This took about 20 min an then I was back out; found the freeway park stencil and then got a phone call with the answer to the spot out in the ID. Rolled down Madison and then back up 1st to the Pike Place Market stop and then to the 4th Ave spot before finishing at the Rendezvous.
I finished 34th over all, with the wee spot of cheating. I feel redeemed though, as I was helping anyone i could who was lost find the spot up on Yale.
This was a super fun race and I feel like i was competititve even with out reliable mechanics. Looking forward to Mess-Mans race and CM this week, who wants to ride teamed?

My accomplice and I had a blast as well. Got our stash and donuts at Top Pot Donuts on Summit Ave. Rode up to Volunteer Park and got assaulted with Super Soakers and nailed in the back of the head with a water balloon. Off to the Comet Tavern and the old ReLoad store. 30 mins later we got our tats and made our way to the secret hideout, then down to REI to look for that bloody Yale address. Got hung up on that one and I'm glad she didn't listen to me else I would have taken us down to Eastlake, thinking Yale extended down there. Gave up on that one and went down to Tiffany's for some sweet bling (HEY Langston - Was that you I gave my tube to at Tiffany's???) Made mass fun of the druggies in the alleyway, saying they were way too nice and cute and just needed a hug. Got our star anyway. Went up to Freeway Park where my chain promptly blew and I sat around for 20 mins trying to fix it with no luck. My friend rode back up to Cappy Hill to get our truck and she picked me up and we limped down to the Rendezvous and had a few pints. Mass fun overall. Not much better way to spend a Saturday night!! Totally looking forward to Messmann's. Have to work on the costume today.

This is why it's always a good idea to keep a short length of spare chain in your bag along with your chain breaker!

well there is not much to add here. jason, denny and i rode together. i was second to the donut shop, right behind messman. unfortunately i was not as aggressive and was the 10th to leave. or plan was to bomb denny to get to the cop shop on yale. well there is not cop shop on yale. there is one close but we were looking for 1700 block and the yale near REI is the 100-200 block. so.... we went north. sorry guys. we went along eastlake when yale starts up again. that however is the 1900 block. wtf? so after wasting some time riding in circle we climbed the big ass hill from the hutch to volunteer park. no shit, they were counting down from 42 seconds when i rolled up. got my blue star and didn’t even get wet, haha. from there we rode all over the fucking place. cap hill, downtown cap hill int. dist cap hill. the line for the tats was way too long so we kept knocking off other check points. finally we just had to wait. the the secret spot the off to belltown. overall i was 24th, 1st in our group to arrive i think. the rest of the night was great. beers at the bar, then left with a few people, lost some along the way, chessa and matt went to make out somewhere along the bruke i guess. i need the night wearing a robber eye mask, bandana covering my lower face, in a basement listening to some awesome punk band. we made a beer run somewhere during the night, which was way fun cause we were still rocking our robber gear. glad we didn’t get shot by the 76 station cashier or university cops. when i got up my legs were pretty sore. throughout the whole night, we only had to stop at one intersection. 1 for 80, not bad. jason and denny, nice riding with you! ps FUCK YALE

No doubt. My friends call me the Wrench cuz I always have the bike goods (like extra tubes! :) to fix anything, but this time I got caught. I've never had a chain like this I couldn't fix. Me smarter now.

Yeah that was me. I got hit by a minivan on broadway by taco bell. I was a little stiff in the morning but otherwise felt fine... until upon closer inspection I realized my rim was actually fucked from the impact and my wheel was well beyond my ability to fix. So I got a shitty one at recycled for the time being, and I now have my next new project lined up: find new rim, build wheel from old hub.
I had a blast riding with you all, hopefully I'll see you this Thur. or Sat.

I'm way late on the race report, but I'll contribute.

For it being my first race, and finding shortcuts/locations around Seattle, DNF ain't too bad. Well before I made it down Pike to Broadway, to meet Ray, the first check point, my chain broke, right in front of the Comet. Ran over to Velo bike shop, and shelled out $15 for a new one, installed. Ended up getting lost and then making it to the bank on broadway, then to volunteer park for the water fight. Went back to get my tat, and the line was outrageous. Met up with this kid Jared, and this girl Jen (?) and rode the rest with them. Jared was a dirty, inside connected cop, (he didn't cheat, and followed his check points like he was supposed to. His apartment was the Secret Locale, aka The Mob Den. Funny how things work when you are connected.) The rest was history. Bombed down Pike into one-way, on-coming traffic to get to Tiffany's, then over to Freeway Park, then down to Pike Place, then down 1st to King, over to Wah Mee Club, then back up 12th to the Tat Shop, then to the Secret Spot **, then down to Yale... the blackhole. Ditched the rest to drink beer. Oh and I stripped/loosened my lockring coming down from Cap Hill the Second or third time. It was fun.

I was in costume last time... why wouldn't I be this time. It was fun, I made this lady jump 5 feet. I was charging down Broadway, with my full robber gear on, chain around the waist, and she was crossing while i had green, just came out of Urban or something. In my best Steven Baldwin, Usual Suspects, voice I asked her for the fuckin keys. It was great.
