Yes there is gravel. I did it last time with 25c gatorskins pulling a ~60lb trailer and did I not have any major problems with my tire size. The only frustrating thing was a couple of hills where I could not stand up in the saddle because my rear wheel would start to spin out in the dirt.

Does anybody else training for the STP want to leave from Seattle on bike, thereby getting some extra miles?
If you're training, you're doing it wrong. The ideal STP is either super easy because you're already in shape, or an epic ordeal for those last twenty miles where your digestive tract is about to invert itself through your face, which is more fun for the rest of us anyways.

Just man up, put a V Brake on a cheap 26in wheel you pick up from recycled and bring the xtracycle. Don't bring one of your squirrelly little lady man racing bikes. You're a fat mexican about to go ride in the dirt - with camping gear. Choosing your narrowest tires is definitely the best choice you can make. The road out there is pretty durn good, but cmon now.

Matthew, you've just made me feel much better about lack of preparedness and my chances of survival.
I will be showing up to the park and ride hoping to get a ride from someone. If need be I can take the Ghia but would rather be in a more comfortable car.

Alrighty, list updated. It is true - I has a car and it has a bike rack. I can fit myself +2 Gringos. Mexicans I think I can get like 12 of them in there.

Okay so everyones pretty much talking about driving all the way to the washout and bicycling from there (8 miles) instead of Darrington (30 miles). Frankly it's an easy ride in from Darrington, but folks are either broke dick (Like Monica and me and possibly Laura) or are going with peeps that need a shorter distance (alex's wife for example), or they're bringing food/drinks or something crazy (Andre w/ ice cream, Rogelio w/ Monica).
So let's start at the washout and bike it in. If we get to camp early we can do some day hikes to the surrounding peaks or something. There's lots of places to go around there. Will stop in Darrington for supplies on the way in.
So this just turned into a short easy ride into a badass campsite. Hope nobodys getting busted up by the lack of miles on this one.

Just called the ranger station up in Darrington and here's the word. Snow level in the open is 3000-4000 feet. There was a group who tried going up Green Mountain recently on 4x4s and couldn't make it to the trailhead due to slides and downed trees. None of the trails past the washouts have been maintained for ~4 years, so their condition is unknown.
Should make for some fun exploring. Snow shoes anybody?

snow shoes probably wont be needed on snow that's been sitting in the sun and kicking it for a few months, overkill to carry those all the way up. only need them if you sink in big soft snow. if there is snow on an upper hike, just bring some solid boots and possibly some yaktrax type slip on crampons and you'll be fine.
