I'm kinda interested in getting into paddling a boat around the waterways around Seattle. The only paddling I've ever done is surf kayaking WAY back in the day. Any of you fancy outdoorsy types have any advice on how to get into the sport? What equipment is needed, preferably on the cheap, where to go, etc.
Thanks

not really relevant, but I kinda haven't stopped reading itsince friday. Tim Anderson is great. I've been wanting to see places like the Takush and Smokehouse valleys around Cape Caution.

ive got two kayaks and gear that most anyone can borrow. paddles, dry bags, vests, etc. just holler. old town loon 111 boats, wide openings for easy entry. mostly casual lake boats. good for our local waters. ive crossed the puget sound a few miles with them in open water, but not encouraged.

Two places to go that are close and have good wildlife and with flat water.
The Lake WA side of the Montlake cut. Busy but we usually see otters and lots of birds.
Mercer Slough in south Bellevue (you've ridden a bike across it if you've taken the i90 trail)
Our kayak is a huge (19' long) touring tandem sea kayak, but about half of the people out there were in short light lake boats like the ones that Derrick has.
There are kayak rentals at Mercer Slough (Entiat Park in Bellevue) and at Aqua Verde for the Montlake Cut.
Northwest Outdoor Center (NWOC.com) on Lake Union has good classes for learning basic paddling strokes.

Enatai, Entiat also has nice kayaking but requires much more driving.
I'd totally like to go on a Pointy3 kayak trip some time ... Don’t currently have a boat either, so would have to rent/borrow, but have done a fair amount of kayaking in years past, both sea and whitewater.
AND, as of next Monday, I'll be unemployed, so will have plenty of time for it. let's go some time!

I'd love to do some kayak camping. Christine and I have a large trip planned this summer, but fitting it another one nighter would be fun. Last year a bunch of people went to Blake Island, but I didn't have a kayak yet.
I'm up for day trips whenever. If Christine has to work (most Saturdays) and someone else doesn't mind sharing a double then we could bring our kayak.
My skills are pretty weak in many respects, so I'm keeping it to easy stuff for now (no big open water crossings). Hoping to work on the skills this summer.

That sounds awesome. Chase and I plus 1 friend might go paddle around the arboretum or something early-ish Thursday. Anyone who has a strange work schedule/unemployed/wants to cut class should conider coming with.

last year there were a pile of sailboats that went over bringing over the non kayaker people. im sure we can set it up again. sailors, take point and set this up!
I don't remember who planned it, but we had 5 sailboats, but only one good dinghy.
It'll happen again.

If we did this sooner rather than later i could probably get Dorothy Rose with her dinghy and outboard. She moves up to Anacortes around the first week of July though, so the sooner the better for me.

Funny, Gretch and I were talking this weekend about how we both really wished this would definitely happen again.
But being the non-organizer yet enthusiastic-contributor sort, I'm admittedly inclined to encourage someone swarthier than me to line up the ducks. I can promise beer and sandy manlove.
Also, if you do it sooner, keep in mind that the mooring buoys fill up FAST in the summer. We had Justin snake one in advance. It isn't recommended that you raft up boats together, the mooring might not hold. You can anchor, if you can find space. You should also pay for using buoys.
It is entirely possible that you get there and no buoys are available. Boaters are staying closer to home these days, and Blake island is EVERYBODY'S favorite.

I wont be able to do this until probably August. I'm working ever weekend in June, and most of July.
You can do it sooner without October...
Or can you?
Just let us borrow your house, what could go wrong?

Eh, That's the solstice weekend, maybe move it back a week? Who wants to do this?

I can bring my boat, and now I've even got a proper dinghy.
Is anybody interested in sailing to the San Juans with me in a week or so? Bring a bike. You can hop on a WSF, ride to Mt. Vernon, then train home if you'd like. Actually, I have to be back in Seattle by June 8th, so I'm either going to sail home or just leave my boat on a mooring ball in Bellingham and come back in a week.
Henry, you have a mooring ball I can barrow around Anacortes? Kinda don't want to leave her on the hook unattended for 7 days.

Our mooring drys at .5, i don't think you want it. We leave the sailboat on the hook when we're there, but it's in cap sante when we're not.

The weekend of the 13th and 14th is Pedalpalooza in PDX which is a friggin riot.
You should do this on the 27th/28th - the weekend before Joeball Mountain and let's do Suiattle on the 20th/21st.
may 30-31 open
june 6-7 open
june 13-14 Pedalpalooza PDX
june 20-21 Suiattle
june 27-28 Blake Island
july 3-4 Joeball Mountain
Or push Blake Island off to a hotter part of the year (July)

Well I just happen to have an extra boat if someone has 7K they want to trade. We can work out a Point83 discount.
Think of it, you could have your very own sailboat, chicks dig it! You Will get laid!
