LET IT BE KNOWN that on Saturday, June 13, at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, a bicycle race shall commence that will not only change the course of human history but will also directly cure cancer.

Okay, so it won't actually cure cancer (and it probably won't change history either). But it will fight, and it might even land a few solid punches to cancer's head or tender nether regions in the process. But it will definitely make a difference, and more importantly, it will facilitate the riding - and racing - of bicycles, the drinking of beer, and the having of fun on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. What could possibly be better?

Chrome Bags has come through with the sponsorship, and has provided a mysteriously large box filled with something awesome. And it could be yours!

Short version: Fuck cancer, ride your bike, drink some beer, win stuff.

Show up at Cal Anderson around 1 PM. Race around the city in the style of an "alley cat bicycle race". Have some beer and win some prizes at Cafe Met after the race - there will be awesome drink specials as well as delicious happy hour food. And while you're doing all this awesome stuff, unwittingly contribute to the good of all mankind.

Be there or be a dang cancer-lovin' insensitive jerkface. Or have a really good excuse.

This picture taken just moments before she falls over and gets run over by a flock of feral water buffalo.

it’s funny, the layout of that flyer kinda reminds me of a Stranger cover ... when I first saw this a few days ago, I was like, "huh, Aden made the cover of the Stranger, cool! oh wait ... "

and on a less-than-funny note ... I’ve had too many friends/family get this cancer stuff ... most recovered, but ... a few months ago, after joining Facebook, I learned that this one friend of mine from way back when fell victim to breast cancer about a year ago. :-( she was 37 at the time.

shall attend.

EDIT: inserted one bold word for the semantically pedantical (and grumpy) greeb

Ha, can't imagine why. I was going through my iPhoto library to find an image for the flyer and it's amazing how much Aden stands out in so many of my photos. I also happen to have a lot of pictures of her... but I picked that one because it involves bicycle racing. It's from Greenlake, probably from 2007.

This one is probably my favorite though:

mommy, mommy,
where does cancer come from?
mommy, mommy, if we raise enough money will it go away?

Probably not... but if enough people sit around and do nothing other than make snarky comments, we've got a fighting chance.

I lost the "Who's Grandmother Will Die of Cancer First Race" by a week or so; this me made me very sad.

SurlyKat!
Thank you for contacting me after the CoreWhore- Your event during the day and ours (yes, it says 'meet' at 5pm... likely to ride: 6pm) will be a social riding performance: Bicycle Belles! into the night.
I do think this would be an excellent way to get more letters out to our representatives- bring them along!
I did not realize this was for Aden! While I would support for any body doing the fight, it is just a jolt of close reality that I know that body!!!

XoXo's

That definitely kicked my ass. Wicked awesome alleycat, nice work! I'm housed. Some highlights; loosing a banana twice, trains, douche bags in delivery trucks, douche bags in pickup trucks, georgetown industrial, whiskey, beer, trail, cute girl, express lanes, hill, DFL.

If anyone gives a shit check out my backwards routing. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=2914785

Express Lanes? Seriously?

Here is my route:

Kinda feel bad for not waiting for Joel and friend to change their flat. All in all a great race.

sorry this is so delayed, i have been low on internet access for the past several days. iphone fail.

Thanks so much to everyone who came out! We had a great time and raised $90 for my LiveStrong Challenge ride (coming up this Sunday!) and $74 to help Aden with her cancer debt. Thanks so much to everyone, including racers, volunteers, and the excellent staff at Cafe Metropolitain for making this happen! You guys rock.

Results: I have misplaced my results sheet. Sad! I'll keep searching and if I find it I will post the real official results. These are partial results as I remember them:

1st: DJStroky - won by almost 15 minutes.
Tied for 2nd: two fixie guys whose names I should remember, and would if I could find my sheet. I think one was Troy?

1st Girl: Caroline
2nd Girl: Jeni
3rd Girl & injury award: Monie

DFL: Jace/Treebeard

Thanks again for coming out and I hope you guys had a good time! Cancer is over in the corner holding his balls and groaning. He'll be fine, of course, but at least we put a little bit of hurt on.

Also, if anyone is interested in letting our senators know how we feel about health care reform*, give them a call at:

Senator Patty Murray
Phone: 202-224-2621

Senator Maria Cantwell
Phone: 202-224-3441

* we need a public option for health insurance, we can't trust the insurance industry to do what is right for people - and they are lobbying stronger than ever this summer, so we need to push back - and health care is a right, not a privilege. just in case you weren't sure how you felt. ;)
