I've decided to start a low key bike group without the ego. For people who want to ride and see the city this summer, but don't need to push the limit. For people who don't know the difference between a Nishiki and a Suzuki. For people who are just starting to learn more about their bikes and want to go to maintenance and repair lessons together without feeling like an idiot. And for those pro-bikers who want to help the beginners learn more about bikes, routes, and maintenance so there are better, safer bikers on the roads.
This will be my first group ride and I am going to be a tourist. I need some pro-riders to help me plan a good route that is safe for beginners or people in their first year. Anyone can come along on this ride as long as they leave their egos at home and are willing to take it easy for the few of us that aren't as fast or as strong. Should be a good day if the weather keeps up!
WHEN?
This Sunday June, 14th
We start with an early meet-up at The Center For Wooden Boats in SLU at 9:30am for a sign-up to ride one of the boats FOR FREE at 2pm. (have to be there at 9:30 in order to get on the boat list)
http://www.cwb.org/
Then it's off for some much needed coffee and breakfast at Lowell's in Pike's Market.
http://www.eatatlowells.com/
When was the last time you went to the market anyway? Lowell's is greasy spoon all the way and cheap, but has one of the best views of the bay. If it's too busy at Lowell's we can just pick our fresh food out and enjoy it picnic style on the grass at the end of the market.
A quick walk around the market then ride to Alki! Enjoy the beach, the sun, and maybe some beers at a convenient bar before heading back to The Wooden Boat Center for a 2pm ship off where we end our ride and enjoy Lake Union.
We have a time limit on this ride so I am hoping we can all make it back by 2 but I predict this is possible. The ride is about 20 miles. There is also a risk that we won't get to ride the boats at all since spaces fill fast, but it's my first ride...and I just want to get out there and see what happens. I don't really care if it all pans out or not, just want to meet more people on my level or who are willing to teach me the ways of the road.
If anyone is interested in helping me plan a safe and easy route to Alki that would be great! I have a general plan but open to suggestions.
Thanks!

you picked the right group. pretty much everybody here is driven by their id.
there's not really much option in the route from cwb via pike place market to alki. through downtown, follow marginal to the lower bridge, over it, and then out to west seattle.

Yes I am well aware of the egos here, but I am sure there are a few (like yourself) willing to help me out and point me in the right direction and there are some on here that just want an easy ride every now and then. This can be their little secret. ;)
I doubt I will find many on this site willing to do these kind of rides, but I am sure I will get plenty of opinions on the best way to go, where to go, what to ride, etc etc. Which is more of what I am looking for on here. Already have a small group willing to go out and explore, I just don't want to put anyone in a dangerous situation as I am new to these streets.
I figured the route is pretty much an "only way there" situation, just wondered if there was any nice downtown roads to take til we get to the bridge. Close to the water.

There's a group called "slow sunday" that meets every sunday at cal anderson park by the fountain at 1:30. It's a great ride for beginers, people who like to cruise, and people with a lot of patience.

Also, come on a ride, tuesday or thursday, 7pm, red square or westlake center respectiely.
See, you're posting about starting a new bike ride that basically is our bike ride to people who ride our bike ride. I think...

From the Market, take Western downhill. If you're really going slow, hop over to Alaskan whenever you can, and take the path on the east side of the road. It will be full of tourists if it's sunny, but so will Alaskan, so if that's the case, you're probably better off taking Western as far as you can before it ends (Yesler, I believe).
At this point, it's Alaskan -> Marginal -> Spokane (bridge) -> Harbor -> Alki. All along the water, much of it nice, if not well-paved. The only tricky part is at the west end of the bridge. Go downhill after you cross the bridge to the 5-way light, look to pick up the path behind the Chelan Cafe (on the NW side).
P.S. The pessimist in me says you can't get a slow group to Alki and back in time, particularly if you stop to eat/drink twice. But to be more kind, think a bit about where you want the group to park their bikes at the Market.
P.P.S. Sunfish!

If you are a novice rider and have never been on a group ride, you really should try out Slow Sunday, as it sounds like you would get along very well with their attitude towards riding. Plus there are very experienced riders in their ranks that could get you guys off to a good start. They meet at Cal Anderson at 1pm and are super nice folks.
I would invite you to Bike Sabbath, but you would totally hate us.

Is Bike Sabbath a fast and egotistical group?
I should totally come...

Yes I know about Slow Sunday. Wasn't sure if they were still doing their thing. I went to the myspace page and didn't see anything current but it's good to know they are still doing rides. I am not typically going to ride on Sundays, it's just for this ride. The wooden boat ride is free only on Sundays.

Sunday is not a set day to ride it's just the first idea. I am just throwing out options that people might be interested in. I would consider Slow Sundays, if only I didn't work normally.

I figure the Alki stop is not as long as the breakfast stop (more of a rest stop) but this is my point, I don't know what to expect. The few friends I do have that ride are too cocky to take the time to show me (luv em but it's true). I have to bare my green ass on a bike forum to get the answers I want just so I can ride. We all gotta start some way right? It's a close ride no doubt and I am equally pessimistic, but I am going to time it tomorrow to be safe.
:) I may be the only one going anyway.

if you show up on a thursday or a tuesday, introduce yourself and just be vocal that you're new to bikes. our first ever point83 ride went from westlake to alki and back and we went pretty slow. we regularly have rides shorter and slower than that first one. just holler and be vocal and we'll keep an eye out for you and make sure you aren't dropped and have a good time.

I never thought to go on rides that were already set-up because I never expected those groups (besides Slow Sundays) to want to deal with someone who is new and might not be as fast and I don't blame them if that's the case. I have a few friends who ride with all these groups and I never got invited, which made me think they were too intense for me and it's hard for me to judge what would be a good ride for me.
That is why I started this alternative ride. So I would feel more comfortable about being new to bikes and riding without dealing with the ego I have seen in random conversations with friends. But if there are rides that are slower then I am happily surprised and look forward to doing them as well. Out of all the bike forums and groups I have been able to find, .83 is the only group with members in my age range, people with similar interests, and has members I already know and like.

Kittens are a drain on society and like to set things on fire while drunk, just like most of us.

No shit. Lucky for me I am used to it, otherwise I'd be crying myself to sleep right now instead of drinking beer and reveling in the commotion I have caused.
