Who the hell is Shane? Please catch me up on this soap. I'd like to know the back story of this potential insult. How else will I be offended?

I understand light heckling, but if everyone here can read then they can see that my post was to ask the people with the knowledge to provide the people without knowledge some direction and some help without making them feel like idiots for doing it. This ride is a good thing that some .83 members have turned into an insult and it's a bit disappointing.
It doesn't faze me, but you guys ARE cocky and should be proud of it. Why is the fact that I ask people in GENERAL to leave egos at home so insulting to you? Get over it. The ego stands here with so many because I never said I didn't want to ride with .83 people otherwise why would I post on .83? I said I didn't want egos to interfere with a good ride for beginners.
I know far too many people (including myself) who shy away from rides like this because of the feeling they don't belong. It is obvious that you guys all know each other and are tight, but you make it hard for others to join. I was just brave enough to jump on an opportunity to learn and ride and I got my ass handed to me for doing it.
Come to a Point83 ride. Come to tonight's ride, maybe. I might - I have to every now and then to remind myself that I'm a joyless roadie and need to punish myself with miles and miles and miles of riding a skinny-tired bike while dressed in spandex. Or drive my car somewhere to ride my mountain bike. Possibly still dressed in spandex. If I deign to show up, I'll be a little hard to spot since I'll be on my utility bike, a silver Raleigh road bike with collapsible wire baskets on the back.
I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish, exactly, but it sounds like you're trying to plan some slowish group rides with a bunch of stuff in the itinerary. Some people really like that kind of thing, so if you're consistent about your project, you might build up quite a following. One of my good friends would probably dig a ride like that, especially if you can keep it from developing a perspective as to what's cool and what's not.
Point83 has a definite way that its rides go. Maybe you'll come and think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread and ditch your project. Maybe you'll come and think they're a bunch of drunken assholes and leave a gap in Seattle's bike culture that's shaped exactly like your project. Certainly they're more welcoming in person, at least if you drink and have less of a penchant for spandex than I do. They also have the same taste for older road bikes that your Nishiki comment implies you might. Anyway, don't let their internet assaults get you down too much - this forum is all about flames and trolls and the occasional sock puppet.

I think this somewhat applies:
The guys are nicer in person, so get on your bike and ride.
WE RIDE IN

you may have led with the wrong foot. joby is right, check your own ego. if you can't see how you're shitting on people with your first post, you probably don't have the easiest time with people. "hello bike club! i've never met you, but i hear you are all dicks, so i am taking my toys and playing elsewhere! also, where should i take my toys?"
bah! the lolcow has run dry, where's the whiskey?

Come on now, why bother being mean to people who ask for help? Even if in their first post they make it obvious that they've actually read the forums. Barack Obama would not approve.

Isn't there a rule that you can't post on this thing until you come on a ride?

We know each other because we showed up a ride, then kept coming back. I didn't meet anyone currently riding with point83 before meeting them on a point83 ride (except for Jimmy who I met through Rollo).
The group is constantly changing with some people joining and some people leaving, as one might expect. It's not like we all went to middle school together and have been BFF since then.

i agree with you to a point, but like alex said, i just kept showing up. people will reach out to you once it's established that you're going to be coming around.
i also found that this helps meet people on the ride:

i think i was riding with the group 2-3 months before i really 'knew' anyone on the ride. and currently most of my memories of the group are pretty foggy. i still am not sure how i got home last thurday. anybody?

Bettie I'm going to respond to your PM publicly here, because it touches on the one policy that we the point83 admins have:
We do not delete accounts
Feel free to not come back if you don't want to have any interaction with us. Or come out for a ride for fucks sake. That's what we do, we ride bikes. We also sing karaoke, swim, and make fires.

I agree with Fatasian totally. When I went on my first ride I knew nobody but the secret really is keep coming. I met friends that are the bomb and had times that were awesome. Tip: if you come on a ride when you get to Westlake look around pick out a circle of people (any people), go up to the circle and say "hey my name is ____. This is my first ride." and I guarantee you people will be welcoming.

(My last post guys don't worry)
Sorry this has gotten so out of hand. I never intended my ride to insult anyone. It was meant as a compliment to Point83, asking for your help and encouragement. I am sad it was taken in such a negative way. I've never posted on a forum before or done a ride before and had no idea there were so many rules and taboos. I also never intended to take away from what you guys have here at all. I was excited to start something so positive and wanted to share with people who might be interested, didn't know it would turn out to be a great big joke. You all read into my post a little too much and jumped to conclusions, now there is an impression of me that does not look like it will change anytime soon. Those who know me on here, know I was sincere and that's all that matters to me.
I am done explaining myself and my intentions. If you want to see the person you made fun of for a week, come out tomorrow, if not oh well.
I've learned my lesson.

It will probably change as soon as you go on a ride. No seriously. The odds are good. Don't be a skeptic.

I went out there this morning because I was curious. Also because I wanted to do some intervals today and thought I might satisfy my curiosity along the way.
She's better in person. Also, she's not named Bettie. Nice pants, though.
Mostly, I think she's freaked out by her impression of Point83. Namely that we're a close-knit group of fast cyclists who don't welcome outsiders. Ryan was curious too and stopped by on his way to REI, and I think that he's starting to convince her that that might not be the case, and she'd have fun if she came to a ride.

Andrew speaks the truth. I know how it is to view .83 from the out side and how different it is on inside. She's a cool person and I hope she comes out to ride some day.
