July 2nd is a Thursday ride and it's time to sleep outside. For those of you still gainfully employed, your 4th of July holiday is most likely observed on Friday the 3rd so don't worry about calling in sick.
Here is the skinny: We catch a ferry at pre-funk time on Thursday from downtown Seattle to Bremerton. Where we ride 10 miles on the road and then 2 on dirt. We pick up food/drink supplies on the way. At camp we eat/drink/be merry around the fire. Friday morning pack up, roll downhill to the ferry and enjoy the rest of your long weekend.
The Detailed:
When: 5:00pm (ferry sails at 5:30 sharp) Thursday July 2nd
Where: Downtown Bremerton-Seattle Ferry dock
Ferry Fare: Passenger+Bicycle = $6.70+$1
Liquor: There is a stop in Bremerton (Mile 1)
Food: Bring/Buy what you need we will have a grocery stop. (~Mile 6)
Beer: Quick-e-stop (~Mile 10, just before the dirt)
Camping: Pack light. Sleeping gear, Cup, Headlamp, Toothbrush
Bike: Roll what you have, there is some dirt but hike it if you need, no shame. Bring a headlight if you have it.
Route(s):
Pavement Dirt Climb Dirt out option
There is also a vista at the top of the mountain for those who seek adventure and have headlights at night. The view1 and view2are great.

The 10 mile ride is cake, it's the 2 or 3 miles up the dirt/rocky road to camp that will break you.
Pack light and prepare to be pushing up that hill.
Oh, also: In. Friday July 3 is my furlough day.

Yeah dude, it's on.
And yeah, even on my 29er I walked up portions of that dirt road. Things just gnarly.
Bring a water filter if you have one. I'm bringing mine if you don't have one. Also though not strictly necessary, bring your mountain bike if you have one - there's a sweet little single track trail to ride on once you get up there. Lots of fun.

Roll what you want, the dirt road in is steep in sections but is the most direct route, thus it is shortest and easiest to follow with the least amount of turns. No matter what bike you bring there is one corner that 99% of the riders will walk, no big deal, you change it up a little, get back to a more mellow grade and keep riding. The alternative route out, is 3 times as long and not as steep and has a little smoother surface and is pretty fun but if you are in doubt on the route just follow the initial path out.
So Jeff, roll your 1x1 if you wanna you'll only be walking like 100 more feet than people with all the gears in the world, that bike will be fun on the way down.
Ben: If you wanna scout and lead that route by all means. The route I am leading is posted.
Derrick: Yes there was a later group last year and if you are leading another group on a later ride that will be excellent. Just remember that the ferry crossing is an hour and then with stops it takes ~2 hours to get to the camp site so be ready to ride in the dark late group.

Perhaps the early group could leave some glow in the dark trail markers.
Last year's scream at the top of our lungs until we heard you shout back was effective, but annoying.
Also: Ro needs to come on this trip.

Seem to remember Matthew going back and forth to find lost people/parties - but what do I know. I was obliterated by Prof Dave's magic cookies last year.

I will be on this trip, but I will be testing the limits of how much can be carried up that road. Maybe I should bring a winch.

I would love to roll my SS 29er on this... does anyone think the approach would be too much of a pain in the ass with SS mountain gearing?
Its either that or the Bareknuckle with ~82" of gears...

29er will be more fun on the way down in the morning, that's for sure.

The ride to the trail head will be cake. The ride up the trail is the reason I am bringing my 1x1. Most people walked it last year anyways, and what they didn't walk was rocky dirt road.

Hell yeah. The bomb out of there in the morning is really long and super fun. Do not bring the bareknuckle if you have the 29er option available to you.

I'm thinking about hiking in (need to get on the road to Portland in the morning), so one less Rohloff. Sounds like Andre isn't borrowing my "spare" Rohloff either...

I'm bringing my rohloff, but it's not on a surly. I guess I can't be part of Joby\'s club.
I already invited the professor. but the neural eraser cookies can stay home.

Mike, you're going to commit ritual seppuku on the fucking spot the minute that beautiful Ira Ryan gets so much as a scratch on her. Don't you have a Diamond Back you'd rather ride for this?

what good is a bike unless you ride it? especially doing fun stuff like this.
but man, I'm stoked for this year's campout. I'll be on the early ferry.

Ok, I'm in.
Alex maybe I can share the ferry expense with you and throw the Friday in the trunk.
Last year I went to the camp early. I enjoyed a leisurely set up at the camp and thoroughly enjoyed watching the group arrive sweaty and tired. The midnight group was the best for looking whipped.
Don't even know if the horse group will be there this year because of the dates, 7/2- 7/3 instead of 7/3-7/4.
The web site says that the gate is open on the weekends 9-6.

It's true, we just didn't know what we were getting into. Bring em on Dave. I've learned my lesson - and so has Laura I suspect.
