The Auburn Police Department recovered my stolen Long Haul Trucker this morning. One Officer Wallace was driving along when he saw a dude with dreadlocks riding a green LHT with a Brooks saddle, and decided the combination was sufficiently unlikely to merit a little hassling. Wallace, (correctly) convinced that something fishy was up, called in the bike's serial number. That came up clean, but the officer was undeterred! Led by the frame sticker he called Island Bicycles, which sold me the bike. Island Bicycles is a small shop, and I used to work there, and I had already told the shop owner Paul that my bike had been nicked. Paul quickly confirmed that the bike was stolen, and gave Officer Wallace my cellphone number. Wallace then called me, but he didn't get through. So, again, not to be deterred, he called me a couple more times until I got out of bed and answered. He told me he had my bike, and that he had actually taken the dreadlock dude into custody. The guy that Scott found, with my bike? He's cold in jail. And my bike is sitting down in Auburn waiting for me to pick it up.

BOOSH!

Just think - the dude could have sold me that bike for $200 on the spot. Now he's in jail. Awesome.

Brandon, how did the serial number come up clean if you'd reported it?

How late do they stay open? Would be rad to do a ride down there tonight enmasse and pick your bike up.

Wait, so the moral of the story is
"Racial profiling leads to [proper] arrest"

Congrats and all, but I'm still a little disturbed.
Sounds like the dude couldn't prove it was his bike and some cop kept hasslin him until he proved he was guilty.
Last time I checked, this group considered appearing suspicious it's bread n butter.

Last I checked homeless dudes carrying huge bags of trash while riding $1,200 bikes is reason enough to warrant a few questions.

Get a grip.

That's great. Next time some police officer gets something stuck in his craw about any of us acting like buffoons or "looking suspicious" let's remember that the police officer is right and nobody here has any right to doubt him.
Gotta love groupthink for a constant case of "you're right when it benefits us" and "fuck off if it doesn't" - cops are great sponges for the sentiment.
Carry on.

Still, cool beans you got your bike back.

Way to get all gnarly when the group doesn't agree with you. Homeless dude on an expensive bike. Cop ran the serial and called the bike shop, probably more or less at the same time. 60 seconds between checks. Who knows why the cop popped him originally. But a homeless dude carrying garbage on a brand new bike constitutes probable cause in anyones court.

Maybe if you're lucky when your bike gets stolen, some other cop will do as good a job to get your whip back to you and you can argue about your theifs civil liberties then.

it is more important to me to have my property than to worry about nebulous stuff like civil liberties.

You go ahead and let me know when you see me riding a bike that would rouse the concern of any police officer in that situation.

Not tryna troll, I already suggested lets go back to congratulating Brandon etc.

The real problem is that once dreadlockthief is released, he'll have learned that it doesn't pay to steal expensive bikes. He'll start stealing cars. He'll ride these cars around, which takes up lanes, parking spots, pollutes, and will cause him to die of a heart attack. The world will be a worse place for it

You should have let the guy keep your bike.

Ali.

The picture is just over exposed. I'm sure he gets funny looks at the airport if he says "jihad" as he's walking through TSA.

I'm white and racist now. Relax. Let's go back to talking about how the poor people are oppressing the rich.
