See Suiattle thread about my tandem that gets around town and goes all night long (or was it "takes a while to stop"? no matter).

Last time I went to Suiattle I rode with one hand. Your could try that too. just saying it's proven possible.

Ditto for my tandem which is set up for touring, but has no rear chain, on account of it breaking in two places at the end of Ben Country.

Or you could be hardcore like btm and do it one-handed.
