Hey everyone, I'm new here and already asking for handouts... Just wondering if anyone has any old steel frames of any condition that they want to get rid of. Cracked is ok too. I just want the frame parts so that I can build a Frankenstein bike. If you donate some parts to the project, I will let you ride it.
Thank you!

Check the dump rack at Recycled Cycles fairly often and you'll come across some good options. I built my cargo bike using a frame that I found there. I turned this:
into this:
I've also had good luck finding donor frames in alleys.

seconded. recycled.
good rule of thumb is to go by atleast once a day, for a week or two. some days you'll find nothing, others you'll find several.
we got most of the ghostbike seattle frames that way.

Maybe I am just imagining this, but I remember the Transfer Station in Fremont has had old bikes sitting near the exit by by the cardboard box recycling area. Would they let you in for free to scavenge? I don't know.

Every so often the UW cuts the locks on abandoned bikes and sells them at their surplus store
http://www.washington.edu/facilities/transportation/movingandsurplus/inventory/
Apparently they've upgraded their general public sales to every Tuesday 12-6
But you can walk in anytime they are open to check out the inventory, if just to see if it's worth it to come back for the public sale.
Besides bikes, they have scads of fascinating old academic/scientific materials to goggle over as well, I'd recommend UW surplus as a destination on its own merit.

most of the uw bikes get sold at auction for about $50 more than they are worth - which in most cases is approximately 0.
by 'frame parts' do you mean components, or tubing and pieces of frames? i think the bike shack is still a going concern and has a good pile of crap frames and giaaant piles of parts. you should also talk to the bikery folks and bike works.

How much effort are you willing to exert for a frame? I have a ~62cm 80's Steel road frame, lower end Sekai that I realized is still crowding my basement. It is free for the taking but that is the u-haul rate. I might be able to drop it off to the U-district tomorrow for a 6-pack. Otherwise it is eventually bound for the free rack at recycled but I have not been by there for months.

Yes.
I've homebrewed a new one since then, using some of the parts from that one.

WOW guys! Thanks for all the replies!!!
Joeball, I will take that bike, I live in the U district near the college, and can buy you a six pack if you bring it my way or I can borrow a car and come grab it with some beer, I have some strays in the fridge.
alex - seriously cool bike, really nice work!
key lime - I'm super excited about the surplus store, more so for the weird old relics, we have a place back in Oakland called Urban Ore, basically a warehouse full of old weird stuff, love it.
Again thanks EVERYONE for the info, I have bookmarked all the mentioned links and now its time to start hunting. I will post updates as the project progresses.
