Cyclocross Season is here, again. Matthew is gone, and I'm assuming Tobias is off racing mountain bikes so he can't post, otherwise we would have heard about it.

It is my understanding some folks want to get together for spectating (drinking) and possibly racing (dropped off the back).

MFG is doing Category Du Jour which is "cheap entry fees, no license involved" and I think would appeal to the more casual "let's get dronk" racer.

We have:

A general calendar

Points of interest:

Sunday 9/13 - Kick-Off Cross w/ Category Du Jour @ Kirkland

Saturday 9/19 - Starcrossed @ Marymoor

Saturday 10/3 - Crosstoberfest @ TBA

Saturday 10/10 - Cross Clash w/ Category Du Jour @ TBD

Saturday 10/31 - Lincoln Park CX w/ Category Du Jour @ Lincoln Park

Sunday 11/15 - Woodland Park GP w/ Category Du Jour @ TBD

And if we're feeling road trippy: Cross Crusade

At worst, we can always organize our own races around the city so we don't have to travel; I like this idea.

And there's this.

I don't get dropped off the back anymore. Can I still come?

Seriously, I'm going to try to make it to a few races this month, and then a few more in November. Not planning ahead too much since I can't do it seriously this year. I'll probably go to this one, unless I book some work that day...

Here I thought I could make a fool of myself without anyone noticing. I have an MFG season pass and a half-built Schwinn Sprint CX conversion in traditonally janky btm style.

Anyone want to go out to King Hill park or whateve sometime soon? Theres a course map on the MFG blog for it.

You mean Big Finn Hill park?

I haven't taken my cyclocross bike off-road since the last time I raced it. So I'd like to go for a ride on Saturday.

Yeah.

I need to finish my monstrosity. One day at a time here. I think a Saturday ride to whatchamacallit would be good though.

I would have been very interested in the clinic - but alas I will be out of town.

If they do another one count me in!

I just booked some work in Woodinville on Saturday. While I don't really know, I'll likely get off 3ish, which means 4ish would be a pretty great time for me to meet people in Big Finn Hill Park.

But no guarantees - basically I'd enjoy joining a group to do some messing around on 'cross bikes on Saturday, and I'd be more likely to be able to do that if it was in the late afternoon.

I just got some cross tires back on my bike. I'd be into romping around the park with some folks tomorrow. I'm a poor cx'er, but I'm happy to share what tidbits I've gleaned from the past year. (drink, go fast, crash, go fast, drink)

Anybody wanna meet at a drinking establishment before riding out?

In.

Also, anyone coming to MFG on Sunday? I'm trying to decide how I'm going to get there.

I'm "planning" on going; I was thinking of just riding out there. My race would be at 9:30, so I would probably leave my house about 7:00-ish.

I'm not really gone, per se, just that I'll only be racing in Seattle once or twice this year.

Don't take masters too seriously. You can race either categories or masters categories usually. Stanglor races masters if I remember correctly so it is a matter of choice and you'll see fast people in every category. Some aren't even sandbagging!

My advice: sign up for CDJ and enjoy the race. Your goals should be to finish, then to finish on the lead lap (that is, go the distance without being pulled for getting lapped), then work on getting faster (and maybe even competitive).

Forget barrier technique. The bikehugger spots forget the most important tip: if you don't want to come back next week, you're doing it wrong.

Miss you guys a bunch!

Who am I going to see tomorrow? I'll be racing Cat. 4 Senior Men, wearing my red and white "Revolution Cycles" squid outfit.

I'm registered for the the Rad Racing GP this sunday. The run-up is a killer, and will be again especially because this will be my first race this year. Look for the guy on a purple bike with WTB dirt-drop bars.

Note there is a free clinic on Friday the 18th at Marymoor, 5:30pm. I'll post back here when I figure out if I'm going or not, might be able to arrange a carpool.

Provided I leave the party at Starcrossed at a reasonable hour and sober up, I'll be at RRGP too. I ride a big red vintage Schwinn frame.

The SCX series starts tomorrow at Evergreen High School. Not too far away.

Also note that Cat 4 Men is in the afternoon, in case you haven't gone yet because you can't get up in the morning.

Speaking of distance since I'm a crank that doesn't want to drive to a bike event, I don't quite understand why there seem to be 3+ seattle area cyclocross factions (copper cross guys today were bitching about how the race wasn't listed here), but on halloween there's one at lincoln park in mid november another at woodland park, disaster!

i plan on leaving here around 1245/1ish so i have time to check out the course, register, and warm up for the 3pm-ish race.(i'll be racing 4b's).

if you wanna go, hit me up. numberis 8---------

i'm down near the Central District close to Jackson/16th... i think.

Short story is that there's some politics involved. It's mostly amicable, but the guys who run MFG cross were a bit disenchanted with how Seattle Cyclocross' race organizers were doing things. I kind of missed a lot of it last year when it happened, but that's it.

At least it's been mostly amicable (scheduling races on opposite days of the weekend to avoid conflicts and so forth).

I've been lurking for a couple of weeks. Thought i'd pop my head in. Just moved to Seattle from DC in late August, enjoying racing in the Seattle cross scene (it's my second season racing). I'm usually a mid-pack finisher in the Men's 4. I'm not exactly a speed demon.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a good park in Seattle to do some practice/drills. I'm in lower Queen Anne so something in this general area would be good, but anywhere is good really. I'm going to go check out David Rogers park on top of the hill tonight and see if it holds any potential for a Wednesday evening practice session. I was also considering checking out the I-5 mountain bike park. Riding tech single track is always good for building the bike handling skills.

Also, if anyone is interested in doing a weekly practice (or if you already are somewhere) let me know. Company is always (usually?) nice.

Have you found seattlecyclocross.com yet? There's a regular practice on Wednesdays, but it's on the east side. Depending on the size and seriousness of the group you were going for, it might make Wednesday a bad day or it might make it a better day to have the competition. I think there's also a South Seattle practice on Wednesday night, and I know there was some discussion of a North Seattle practice, but I don't know if anything came of it.

As far as practicing in Seattle city limits, officially there's no cycling off pavement in any of the city parks (except for Colonnade.) Unofficially, Woodland Park in Greenlake is pretty good.

Colonnade is fairly high-consequence and it's definitely freeride-oriented. You'd definitely improve your handling skills there, but you should really know what you're getting into. It's definitely more the territory of dirt jump, BMX, trials and long-travel bikes.

I don't think that is true. The main path through Cowen/Ravenna Park is open to bicycles and unpaved. The side trails are not (and are well signed). CycleU also teaches on lawns at Magnuson.

I agree that Woodlawn is the best place to practice cross. Of course you can make up a practice area pretty much anywhere.

David Rogers park turned out to be an excellent practice spot. It's fairly large, it's hilly, there are a bunch of trees lining the hill making for a natural off-camber slalom course, and there's a good short, steep hill to practice transitions into run-ups, and there are some flat spots to set up barriers. As a bonus, there are bathrooms and water fountains.

The park was relatively empty. There were probably 10-15 people playing with their dogs on the northeast corner of the park, but they really just stayed in that one area. I can't imagine ever getting hasseled for riding around in there if there were less than 10 or so people.

I used my messenger bag and a log yesterday, but I'm hoping to put together some PVC barriers (possibly even this weekend) that can break down into a backpack for slightly more legit practicing.

I managed to wrench my left knee, presumably on a botched dismount, so I'm gimping around a bit today, but all in all it was great fun bombing around that park.

I'll probably be riding up there to practice every Wednesday between 5 and 5:30 if anyone cares to get some cross practice in and, like me, doesn't feel like driving out to the Eastside and paying 10 dollars to practice.
