Hi everyone. Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I am relocating to Seattle. I am in need of a place to live as a bi-product of these circumstances.
I'm here from Chicago, I was in town back in January with my girlfriend, we met a few of you and went on a short ride (we actually busted out quite early).
Anyway, I ride bikes. I like bikes. I like movies. I'm clean. I clean up after myself (most of the time). I'm fun to hang out with, most of the time. And I can fix your bike if it breaks.
Anyone have any rooms available? I'm not sure of where to live. I'm only really familiar with the Ballard area, b/c my g/f has friends that live there.
I'd like to be close to downtown somewhere, but cheap and safe.
Oh, and I have a car, I need somewhere to put my car that's safe.

Virtually everywhere in Seattle is safe, very few are cheap.
There are some cheap parts of Capitol Hill. That's a great area to live in when you first come to town as it's centrally located and there is a lot going on around there.

It's true; cheap and safe are easy close in, but car is a bitch. Some apartments around Capitol Hill/First Hill/Central District will give you a zone permit as part of your lease.
I don't have a car, so I don't know this for sure, but my impression is that the Greenlake area has a lot of open street parking. It's a pleasant, safe area to live in with lots of single-family homes shared by 20-somethings. You might check craigslist for openings in Greenlake.
Capitol Hill is a pretty ideal neighborhood for centrality and stuff to do, but having to park a car is going to increase your cost of living and decrease your quality of life in this neighborhood enough to make me recommend looking elsewhere. Ballard is kind of out of the way (very light on good bus routes, and driving there is a pain), but it's actually super accessible by bike, and might also be easier for parking once you get off the main drag.
As has been said, pretty much everywhere in Seattle is safe--CD can be a little sketchy, but the violent crime that happens there isn't random: basically if you're not involved in drug deals or gangs, you'll be fine. Cheap: depends on what you mean by cheap. Seattle's pretty comparable to Chicago, I'd say, where rent is concerned. It's a good time to be looking for a place, lots of apartments sitting empty for extended periods of time.

I'd extend beyond Greenlake into other areas north of the ship canal. I live in Roosevelt which has more stuff to walk to than Greenlake, as does Wallingford. Both have pretty ample on-street parking. My block requires a parking zone sticker, but they aren't hard to get or expensive ($40/year if I remember correctly).
I used to live in Greenlake and it's fine too.
I don't rent and can't comment on rental prices or even really guess on them.

the following neighborhoods are good to search for
Roosevelt, Ravenna, Greenlake, Wallingford, Fremont, Ballard, Phinney (Ridge), Greenwood (but that's getting up there), Tangletown,
They're the best in urban residential living Seattle offers
Here's a primer
Yeah, you can live cheaply on the hill, but it'll nearly always be a hovel with some shifty landlord. Too many fashion-hungry dodos willing to pay too much to be within stumbling distance to the nightclubs drive up the rent. There are some liveable places on the hill, but you gotta have a really good job to afford one.
My Wallingford/Greenlake house is looking for a new roommate, end of September. In order to maintain some gender balance in my house we're only lookin at girls. So if you're a lesbian (you mentioned havin a gf) we should talk. Otherwise, best luck.
If you're curious about prices in general, my house has five people and we each pay $400-500 a month plus utilities. I think that's on the low end for such a nice/clean/big house.

Phinney Ridge and Greenlake should be your northernmost borders and right above the shipping canal is great place to be. I would not check out Greenwood as it is way up there and out of the way.

"So, how's gun crime around here?" isn't a question you ask when you look for places in Seattle, it's kinda nice.
Wallingford is a nice, centrally located, quiet neighborhood with easy access to Fremont, U-District, and Ballard, all along the same major bike trail. There isn't much of a nightlife but Tangletown is nearby and other neighborhood are around, oh, and there's a really good taco truck.

look into interbay. it's centrally located just south of the ballard bridge, and there is tons of real cheap housing. 3 or 4 on my block alone.

They just (are about to?) closed on a house so I think Happy Stick and his wife figured that out. :) I am gathering that is why he has the cap hill place available to offer as they move out?

it's a townhouse (meh) but it's big, it's not down in the gulch, madison market and joe's are a block away, two great bars I can easily stumble home from, AND it has a private garage.
but yeah renting is lame, just try and imagine wiping your ass with your rent money.
the new house is in leschi, bigger, betterer, and I'm kinda sick of the hill (not to mention I can't afford a house up here).
