hey all,
a friend had her bike stolen Thursday. They smashed out the back window in her car, parked in her apt complex and took the bike. They left everything else, even some cash in the front seat.

CL posting: http://seattle.craigslist.org/see/laf/1370445687.html

"My bike was stolen sometime Thursday night, September 10th, in the Ballard area.

It is a Womans Specialized Dolce Elite, White and Yellow

If you've seen my bike, please respond asap by email. Thank you!"

Thanks for your help guys!

Lock your bikes folks! The number of bicycle thefts has skyrocketed over the summer. Cable locks are getting cut. Frame locked bikes in to the back of trucks. One person had their bike snatched in their office while they were sitting there! Some guy jumped on a unlocked bike on Alki and just rode off.

Where do these bikes go? Either a crackhead is riding it around or Where else? They don't pop up on Craigslist. Are they shipped to different parts of the country and sold?
I try to keep my bicycle locked within 100 feet of me at all times and for no more than 2 hours.

I'm sorry that your bicycle is gone. Its like loosing a best friend.

I've adopted Jace's method on this, though I'm guilty of using an (albeit heavy guage) cable lock these days, and try to lay eyes on it every hour or so.

I lock my bike frame to the car body whenever I leave her outside in a car for the night.

Double u-lock if I'm going to a movie to which I'm not going to ride the bus.

One perk of not working in a dense bicycle area is less thieves. I get nutted up about locking up around DT though. This is why I try to always have a 'turd' bike in the stable. Problem is I get attached to said turd bikes and put nicer things on them.
