Hey Folks,
A buddy/coworker of mine got hit by a car Friday night. He is lucky to be alive, his left leg is pretty well screwed and he had almost 6 hours of surgery to repair it on Saturday. He now has a pin from his knee to his ankle, and they are unsure how well the multiple breaks will heal.Tentatively will be in the hospital for about a week. You may have heard about it on the news, it was a SPD Cop that hit him late Friday night. For his sake legally I dont want to give details. We are going to plan a little fundraiser to help cover his bills while he is out of commision and get him a new bike. If any of you know a band or 2 that would be willing to help out with that please private message me and we can get in touch with the person who is going to help line this up. He is in good spirits considering and last night he even made a comment about wishing he was riding in the Messquerade deal. This won't keep him off a bike but it has dampened his spirits a bit.

Keep you head up and stay safe out there.

So who's fault was it?

Was it at night? Did he have lights? Was he obeying traffic laws?

DETAILS MAN!

I for one would not give money or sympathy to stupidity. Now if it was the cop's fault and there was negligence then the cop should be taken to the cleaners and made an example of. If it is the bikers fault, chaulk it up to lack of education. Why is it that so many bikers seem to think traffic laws do not apply to them? Running red lights is done willfully. I am talking about not signaling in heavy traffic. Riding wrong way on the street. And just being stupid.

Either way, the Bicycle Alliance of Washington should DO SOMETHING. Either start educating new and existing drivers about bicycles being on the road or have a public whipping of the cop to set and example and maybe foster some kind of educaton program.

One bad thing that will surely come out of it will be that cycling is DANGEROUS and that no one should do it. We should all just go back to driving cars. It is much safer.

Dude that really sucks. I hope your friend has a good recovery.

It's stories like this that make me be a little more conservative than i probably ought to be on my bike, but i like the idea of being able to walk when i turn 23.

I agree with aaron that a lot of people are pretty dumb out there. Even when we're in the right it's hard to see us in the dark and the rain and it pays to be pretty careful.

I've got a friend who's my age (17) and was on his way home from school on his motorcycle. Long story short a car hit him from the side/back into oncoming traffic, he was run over by a delivery truck and hit by a car. This was about 4 weeks ago and he's also got a pin from his knee to his ankle, plus permanent nerve damage in his other foot. He'll be in a wheelchair for another 4ish months. Driver sped away and as far as I know is still on the loose.

After visiting him a few times i keep noticing how many accidents have been occuring lately. Is it because of the change of season? Its been scaring me shitless.

I hope your friend has a sound recovery, and i hope that only good comes from both of our friends experiences.

It was at night. He was with another group of riders, front and rear lights, and a helmet The light was green. Cycling is his only form of transportation and he is a very strong, knowledgable cyclist.

There was multiple witnesses. I do not want to give full details as he already has a lawyer and do not want to hurt his legal backing by marring a story by telling it 2nd hand.

That really sucks.

I was stupid on Friday night when I was hit, I had my helmet in my backpack because I was wearing a beanie for my costume, and I didn't bother to put my light on because I thought I'd be with the CM group the whole time. If I'd had my light on, the car probably wouldn't have hit me, and if I had needed my helmet, the irony would have been overwhelming.

That was my evil twin.

Actually I was just being factitious!
Cycling is totally safe. It is safer than walking on the sidewalk. It only dangerous if you make it so.
