This Wednesday, at City Hall from 5:30-7:30pm there is a Statewide Traffic Justice Summit to bend the ear of the state legislature judicial chair among others to try to get support for a vulnerable user law that increases the civil penalties for drivers who maime and kill pedestrians and cyclists.

The Bertha Knight room is big. We want to pack the place. We want people to provide testimony. If you can be there, it would really help.

As for the Mayoral Race, we all know Suzie Burke. She maxed out with a $700 donation to Mallahan. So did Salmon Bay Sand and Gravel. Suzie even held a fundraising party for Mallahan.

If we want a pro-cycling mayor, McGinn needs volunteers (funemployed?) and $$. $10 buys a single cable TV ad.

Washington drivers kill and disable more than 400 pedestrians and bicyclists every year. In the vast majority of cases, these collisions were found to be the direct consequence of speeding, failing to yield the right of way, or the commission of some other moving violation. The victims are overwhelmingly the young, the old, the poor and the disabled. As few of the incidents rise to the level where they warrant felony charges, a traffic ticket is the worst the driver can expect.

Now that's bullshit and you all know it.

Info about the summit (thanks, Ca$cade):

City Hall main entrance is on the west side of 5th Avenue between Cherry Street and James Street.

Where is the (quick) prefunk?

Oregon pulled this off, and if showing up at City Hall for an hour today does too it seems well worth the effort.

Old penalty for carelessly killing a cyclist in Oregon? $200 fine.

New penalty? Complete a traffic safety course, perform 100 to 200 hours of community service, pay a fine of up to $12,500, and suspension of driving privileges for one year.

And then, if you haven't had enough of events related to bike advocacy (at least tangentially), you might check this out at Town Hall:

I'm thinking of going; anyone else?

Do you have much experience with these events? Do they sell out/can I wait to buy tix until I get there? I will be totally willing to go so long as it's not raining as hard as it was when I biked the reverse route today at noon. Sitting in a meetin hall soaking wet would just suck. Gettin educated with the Prof would be rad. In (pending downpour)

When the events are somebody big, like David Byrne or Ram Dass, they sell out. This one, though, I'm pretty sure you could just show up.
Don't do it on my account, though; I'm definitely waffling and, like you, may have it depend on the weather whether I show.
