A bicycle ride in the woods could really do me some magic.
so, on the off chance that it's not pouring this sat i'm gonna ride up to lester. it's the most intact ghosttown in the area.
bout 65 miles round trip. leave early, drive out to exit 42. and by early i mean ben early, so 8ish so we can make it back in the light.

you realize this is the tiny dirt road that runs up the valley floor and not the interstate, right?

I dove down it on a nice sunday drive weekend and didn't pass that many cars, most were lollygaging subarus not rednecks in trucks i passed too. It will require effort but the switch backs were pretty.
I'm down for the full meal deal. I may drive or drive to someones house with more bike carrying capacity than me.

Paved, not dirt. Drove it on sunday and thought to myself "this would be fun to ride down, not up".
You know that you can't legally get to Lester, right? It is inside the watershed. Not too far in, but it is past the gate. I was escorted out in 2001 (after riding about 75% of the way through the closed watershed, 15 miles or so past Lester).
It's still worth doing the ride over Stampede Pass. I'm considering it pending good weather. That's going to be a lot of good climbing.
I might cheat and park at Hyak to avoid riding on 90. Too bad the tunnel is closed.

From reading a thread or two on ghost town websites, I don't think Lester is closed anymore. They used to boot you out, now you can walk in from the east (there's a gate; sources seem conflicted on whether the town is .5 or 2 miles past the gate). They don't want bikes to pass the gate, but I don't know how strictly that is enforced.
West of the town is still closed (and apparently well-marked) as the Tacoma watershed, which is why you can't access it from the west.

They let you in from the west if you are a dutch boy, Koos?

They shipped Koos to Gitmo for obviously trying to poison the water supply.
Actually, I hear before she died, you could come up from the west if Gertrude (the last Lester resident) invited you up.

I'm a strong maybe on this one. Rain is not necessarily a deterrent.

okay, hiking this weekend fell through due to weather so this is my Saturday plan A. I won't be out tomorrow (Sorry, Ben) can I catch a ride, or are people thinking of riding the whole way?

90% chance of precip for Saturday, but only 50% for Sunday... does Sunday work for people?
http://bit.ly/3WjydE
whether this weekend or some other time, I'd really like to do this ride.

forecast is still looking kinda marginal for the pass (40% chance precip, high around 50) but fuckit, i'll go ... next couple of weekends are booked, and after that, parts of this route might be under snow.
dibs on spot in your car if there's any left; will call you later.

Did this happen?
Andre, Lee and I cheated and drove over there on Saturday. We walked from Lester to Mayfield, didn't find anything too exciting in the way of ghost towns, but lots of areas to explore for overnight bike tours next year. FR54 to FR52 to FR41 looks like a promissing loop.

god took a giant shit on me.
or my brand new pasela must have some sort of defect.
got 5 pinch flats in the space of 9 miles in the same place on the rear tire while riding on a not that rocky section of the iron horse. everytime pumped it up to at least 100psi.
needless to say we got angry and turned around after the 4th flat at mile marker 4.5. fuckin arms got more or a workout then my legs.
